WOMEN in arts: At the recent events at the Palm Springs Cultural Center and Palm Desert area, we were privileged to meet some incredibly talented young and seasoned artists. Their creativity and passion for art were truly inspiring. It reminds me of something Terry McMillan @therealterrymcmillan said in an interview by Will Dean @willdeanshow when asked why she writes. She replied, “I may not know why I write, but I feel better when I write. I feel better.” This resonates so deeply, especially in times like these. During challenging moments, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, my own children found solace and a way to question the world through art. It became their voice, a medium to express the complex emotions and thoughts brewing inside them. To the young artists and their supportive parents we had the joy of meeting, I encourage you to keep on creating. I will start posting the series of work that I managed to do at home during covid. I had no art class to go to and it was a struggle to make this work. I tried to make contrasting images from spiritual and environmental symbols and icons that try to visualise some of the difficulties that I had connecting to nature and the environment around us. Memories from Soho murals in 2020. Here I am standing in from of Dolce & Gabbana store in Soho, that I loose that count of how many times I painted, and this is one of the dismantled, painted over versions. It was an unforgettable spring and summer of riding the ferry with a ladder and buckets of paint to soho every single day. I painted over 40 murals at that time, and with each coming day I had no idea what I painted the day before would look like the day after. It was definitely a new experience for me as a studio painter to get out there on the streets and get my brain around perceiving art in “street art” terms, where paintings would get tagged and painted over as a sign of respect. It taught me the beauty of impermanence, the magic of moments when someone would turn that corner where my work is and see it the way it was in that specific moment. It felt like I was hair in a drain, and my place in the world was being washed away by the grime of domestic life in lockdown with two small children.
