741. Bo Diddley/Billy Stewart - "Bring It to Me Jerome"/"Reap What You Sow" split 45, year unknown. Today is BO DIDDLEY DAY! This is one of the best days ever in this family record collection because Bo Diddley has always been my favorite rhythm & blues artist & that's never going to change. I've been listening to Bo Diddley since I was eight years old, so that is no hyperbole on my part—he really IS my favorite! "Bring It to Jerome" first came out in 1955 as the flip side to "Pretty Thing" & it is one of many Bo Diddley songs that I would describe as quintessential; it's one of his best-known tunes & one that I would point out if I wanted to inform a new listener as to what Bo Diddley is all about. I can't remember when I first heard "Bring It to Jerome," but I do know that I thought it was just about the greatest rhythm & blues song that I'd ever heard at the time. Sharing a split 45 with Billy Stewart is actually quite appropriate in this case, as Bo Diddley discovered him playing piano in Washington DC & invited him to be part of his backing band. Bo also got Billy Stewart hooked up with Chess Records & played guitar on his "Billy's Blues" 1956 debut 45. "Reap What You Sow" was first released in 1962 with "Fat Boy" on the flip side. Although it sounds familiar due to the background vocals, I'm not entirely sure that I've heard this song before. I like it though; it's a very good slow soul jam laden with female backing vocals & Billy Stewart's trademark vocal improvisations. Although I wasn't expecting a split 45 when I pulled this off the shelf, I am certainly not going to complain. Both songs are great & I dig how the Collectables label made this record a neat bit of trivia for the die-hards, as Bo Diddley & Billy Stewart is not exactly a random pairing here. Good times.

New to my library- Billy Stewart "Cross My Heart" 1974 on Chess Records, fourth and last album. Pop, Soul, R&B singer, drummer, pianist, and songwriter, whose strength in music theory and extraordinary cadenza scatting skills enabled him to record some startlingly creative songs. His first singles were released in 1956, and he had six chart hits in the sixties before he was killed in a car crash in 1970. "Cross My Heart" is a mix of upbeat and ballad, with five of the songs written by Billy and only one cover I recognize. His name is spelled wrong on the cover of every version of this posthumous album.
