The Cascade Complex The building that now houses the #CafesjianCenter for the Arts is well known to the #Armenian people. Known as “The #Cascade,” the complex was originally conceived by the #architect Alexander Tamanyan (1878–1936). #Tamanyan desired to connect the northern and central parts of the city—the historic #residential and #cultural centers of the #city—with a vast #green area of #waterfalls and #gardens, cascading down one of the city’s highest promontories. Unfortunately, the plan remained largely forgotten until the late 1970s, when it was revived by Yerevan’s Chief Architect, Jim #Torosyan. Torosyan’s conception of the Cascade included Tamanyan’s original plan but incorporated new ideas that included a monumental exterior #stairway, a long indoor shaft containing a series of escalators, and an intricate network of halls, courtyards, and outdoor gardens embellished with numerous works of sculpture bearing references to Armenia’s rich #history and cultural #heritage. Construction of Torosyan’s design of the Cascade was launched by the Soviets in the 1980s but abandoned after the Armenian earthquake of 1988 and the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. With independent rule and the transition to democracy, #Armenia entered a period of severe economic hardship, and the Cascade remained a neglected relic of the Soviet era for more than a decade. Mr. #Cafesjian, working with the City of #Yerevan and the government of the Republic of Armenia, initiated its recent revitalization in 2002. Over the next seven years, virtually every aspect of the monument was renovated.

What a great celebration for Armenian cultural heritage and diversity! Last weekend, the My Handmade Armenia Crafts Festival was held at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. In this one-of-a-kind festival from the @my_armenia_program, more than 40 artisans from Shirak, Lori, Tavush, Vayots Dzor, and Syunik showcased their product collections and demonstrated their skills. Throughout the two days the festival was held, adults and children participated in various artisan-led workshops, including traditional carpet weaving, ceramic painting, ceramic, felting, basket weaving, and more. Gerard Cafesjian was an Armenian-American who became a successful publishing executive. After his years in business he turned his attention to philanthropy, focusing on Armenia. Cafesjian was the child of survivors of the Armenian Genocide who came to the United States. He was born on April 26, 1925, in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York City. Although he achieved significant business success as an executive at West Publishing, Cafesjian is most remembered for his philanthropy. He was the founder of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts in Armenia – a museum and exhibition space for contemporary art in the country’s capital, Yerevan. He was also the lead benefactor of the Armenian Genocide Museum in Washington, DC. The idea was connecting the centre and north of the city with a garden, fountains and waterfalls. The project was forgotten until the 1970s when Jim Torosyan took over it and added new elements to the complex, but after an earthquake in 1988 and the fall of the Soviet Union, it remained abandoned. 💵 In 2002 Gerald L. Cafesjian invested over 35 million dollars to restore and finish the neglected Soviet complex and turn it into the "Cafesjian Centre for the Arts", bringing the best of contemporary art to Armenia since 2009 for free. The complex exterior consists on 5 platforms connected by 572 steps with fountains, khachkars (Armenian cross-stones) and sculptures by renowned artists such as Botero, Jaume Plensa, Lynn Chadwick or Barry Flanagan. I’m pretty sure that if Armenia had a Ministry of Magic, it would be hidden at the Cascade. But this complex - which has a 572-step staircase running up 991 feet, gorgeous fountains and architecture, plenty of sculptures throughout the gardens creating an outdoor gallery of sorts, and exhibit halls on the inside (where there are escalators if you don’t want to climb the steps) forming the Cafesjian Center for the Arts - is still pretty magical in the Muggle world. ✨ Visit at sunrise or sunset if you can - the golden light makes it look exceptional and once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the city and the mountains beyond.
