Last week, our very own Sam Bowstead was invited to speak at the National Flood Plain Management Australia Conference. Hosted by BMT’s Zita Dore and accompanied by a distinguished panel of planners, engineers, architects, and emergency managers, the event brought together a wealth of expertise. The panel included Shannon Haines, the Coordinator of Natural Hazards Planning, Pradesh Ramiah, the Principal Planner for Natural Hazards Planning in Moreton Bay, Chris Barnes, the Manager of Emergency Management and Public Safety for Moreton Bay, and Damion Cavanagh, the Principal Engineer at BMT. The discussion centred on enhancing flood risk management strategies within the Australian context. To begin to answer such a profoundly complex and deeply impactful question, a comprehensive understanding of its full scope and effects is essential. One focal point of the discussion was the exacerbation of the current housing crisis in Australia by natural disasters, particularly flooding, which heavily affects communities in Queensland and New South Wales. This led to a further examination of the critical role insurance plays in managing these risks. A key takeaway from the discussion was the need for a holistic approach that addresses both micro and macro levels of the issue, maintaining a long-term perspective on managing the increasing frequency and severity of flood events. The importance of ongoing dialogue through forums like the one hosted by BMT was emphasized as a vital component of this strategy. Only when we accept the threat of climate change do these everyday acts become clear in our minds that, we have met the enemy, and that enemy is us. We cannot accept that knowledge, or we will react to it with anger and resentment. Με επιτυχία ολοκληρώθηκε σήμερα, 29/5, στο κυλικείο του Γεωπονικού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, το Εργαστήριο Συλλογικής Χαρτογράφησης και Σχεδιασμού στο πλαίσιο του ερευνητικού έργου Urban Heat Watch. Οι συμμετέχουσες και συμμετέχοντες, είχαν την ευκαιρία να συζητήσουν μεταξύ τους και να ανταλλάξουν απόψεις πάνω σε στρατηγικές σχεδιασμού κα πρακτικών που θα βοηθήσουν στη δημιουργία ανθεκτικών βιώσιμων και ανθεκτικών περιβαλλόντων, λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν ορισμένα αρχικά στοιχεία που απεικονίστηκαν υπό τη μορφή χαρτών. 🚌 Vydali jsme se do terénu a navštívili hned tři místa z naší databáze dobré adaptační praxe. Inspirovat se s námi vydala dvacítka lidí. Věříme, že exkurze účastníkům přinesla zkušenosti k prosazování podobných inspirujících projektů i v jejich městech a obcích. 👍 👉 První zastávka byla Roudnice nad Labem, kde jsme díky deštivému počasí měli jedinečnou příležitost vidět dešťové záhony v praxi 🌧️. Podle autorky Martiny Imramovské bylo hlavně štěstím, že první projekt vznikl. Vedl pak totiž k tomu, že město začalo chápat benefity dešťových záhonů a zapojení zeleně do ulic. Díky tomu je začalo chtít i v dalších ulicích. 👉 Po obědě jsme se přesunuli do Terezína v Litoměřicích, kde má své sídlo rodinná zahradnická firma Gabriel👩🌾. Bratři Lukáš a Tomáš Gabrielovi se už dlouho snaží jít příkladem a uvádět do praxe přírodě blízká opatření. Jinak tomu není ani v sídle firmy, které tak slouží jako vzorník pro zákazníky. V praxi si zde můžete prohlédnout zelenou střechu, kořenovou čistírnu, parkovací rošty s rozchodníky, ale také povrchovou akumulační nádrž, tepelná čerpadla či fotovoltaiku. 👉 Exkurzi jsme završili v Jiráskových sadech v Litoměřicích, kde nás architekt Zdeněk Sendler zasvětil do toho, jak se revitalizuje městský park s ohledem na lidi, život ve městě, ale i na vyvíjející se klimatické podmínky a potřeby stromů 🌳 a zároveň s ohledem na finanční možnosti města. Dear Friends of Chitungulu! This is an appeal to you, our supporters. We’ve started a fundraiser as, after all those years, we would now really love to start the construction of our Chitungulu Biodiversity Conservation Centre. The aim is to start building in July this year! In a nutshell, the purpose of the conservation centre in Chitungulu is to become a regional environmental knowledge hub serving four large villages. It will be a cheerful and inspirational place where we offer workshops, environmental training linked to the possibility of obtaining scholarships, and many other activities for adults and children alike, all centered around the relevant themes of biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation. In 2022, forests covered 58% of Slovenia’s surface area, with a timber stock estimated at 362.4 million cubic meters. 🌲 In 2022, 4.6 million cubic meters of wood were harvested, with firewood production reaching 1.2 million cubic meters. According to statistics, firewood production per capita has remained relatively constant over the past decade, averaging about 0.6 cubic meters per person. 🔥 Households consumed one million tons of wood fuels in 2022, accounting for over one-third of total household energy consumption. 🌍 Between 2015 and 2022, the forestry, wood processing, and paper industries employed an average of around 15,000 people, with 15,282 employed in 2022. Forests play vital role in our economy and environment! 🌟 Co-Creation Workshop 🌟 This month, Møre og Romsdal fylkeskommune hosted the dynamic co-creation workshop for Kristiansund area as part of the CREST project, and bringing together four diverse groups of participants, with the goal to enhance capacity building but also to drive co-creation for resilient communities. The CREST-project is dedicated to help vulnerable urban areas to set-up and roll-out collaborative platforms through digital twinning and co-creation approaches to support environmental decision-making and innovative policy practices, enabling robust and resilient responses to climate change. During the workshop, our Norwegian partners delved into scenarios of wind impact on Kristiansund kommune exploring potential challenges such as bridge closures and ferry disruptions. It was an eye-opening experience, highlighting the importance of proactive planning and collaboration in mitigating such risks. This vital event, organised by the Uganda Parliamentarians Land Management Forum, brings together stakeholders from across the country to discuss the critical issue of land governance under the theme "Securing local land rights to support climate change adaptation and sustainable food systems". As Cordaid, we're particularly excited to be a part of this symposium, having recently commenced implementation of the Agricultural Governance Results Improvement Project (A-GRIP). This 5-year initiative, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uganda, aims to improve food production and income for smallholder farmers by enhancing public service delivery and access to land tenure security. During the symposium, we'll be moderating panel discussions, sharing our expertise and best practices in Agri-food systems, climate and engaging in policy dialogue with government and development partners.
