The majority of my weather predictions that are posted here and on all my other stable accounts have been 100% accurate so far.. The first heat wave I predicted for May came early in April (the other day, Strava is the new Twitter for mentally and physically healthy people who are very technologically savvy in relation to creating relationships with nature like my ongoing, lifelong nature of training & finding Devonian specimens outdoors & especially with my cancer fight with my local doctors). I predicted three heat waves months in advance, and this summer is going to be extremely catastrophic and probably do some really interesting things to housing and property values, cities are just on their way out and smart cities are on their way in. Where I live & grew up as an in advanced placement, graduate of the arts at 17 from NTHS (Mike Shannon, the Oscar nominated actor is one of my fellow alumni. He dropped out never finished high school like his friend Tony Fitzpatrick. He also skipped the Holocaust studies class that I had with the most beautiful girl at school Rachel Simon, who I had a blast reconnecting with at our HS reunion talking about self-care, also @sarah_ruhl brilliant playwright of Clean House was in my AP class) I’ve lways considered an ideal place for smart city. It has a lot of the structures in place already in order to be able to utilize biometrics in order to establish security on a militarized globe, I’m sure this has to do with all of you’ve been reading about scarcity right? 3-D printing will play a huge role. I’m planning on having 3-D printers here in work with computer scientists & quantum scientists studying my Devonian fossils in order to understand decision theory prehistory origins of all consciousness not just human consciousness.

Dunkleosteus skull 😨 😱 Dunkleosteus is a genus of arthrodire placoderm fish that existed during the Late Devonian period, about 360–380 million years ago. Some of the species, such as D. terrelli, D. marsaisi, and D. magnificus, are among the largest arthrodire placoderms ever to have lived. The largest species, D. terrelli, measuring up to 6 m (20 ft) long and 1 t (1.1 short tons) in weight, was a hypercarnivorous apex predator. For Fossil Friday here are some of my favorite in my collection eurypterids. These specimens all belong to the lower Devonian eurypterid Erieopterus microphthalmus. All the specimens were collected from the type section of the Oleny member of the Manlius formation. Most of these specimens were generously gifted to me by my good friend @yonkinsbugs, thank you Owen! The first 3 slides are a complete Erieopterus with all appendages preserved. The other specimen are partial but still incredible and very rare. This past weekend I stood at the bottom of an ocean in the middle of upstate NY. Deep-time exploration and connection season has begun as the warm weather begins to creep in. This formation is part of the Helderberg Group, which are composed of limestones that were deposited in a shallow sea during the Middle Devonian - 395-385 million years ago. There are three rock formations that present: the Coeymans Limestone, Kalkberg Limestone, and Becraft Limestone. The Coeymans Limestone is the oldest formation here - and the site is abundant in fossils from the era. I am always in awe when I visit places like this - where the rocks are alive with stories from the past, the weight of all they encompass weighs heavy on my mind and my ability to comprehend such vast spans of time. #FossilFriday Bothriolepis, this alien looking creature, which had a carapace that looks like those of a turtle but which also covered its head, and 2 long fins that resemble flattened crab legs is an antiarchian fish from the Middle to Late Devonian. Antiarchians were a group of placoderms, early jawed fish that had bony plates that covered their heads and upper bodies. One group of placoderms evolved into modern jawed vertebrates, but all the other groups went extinct during the large extinction events of the Late Devonian. Until then antiarchians were a common group of bottom feeding fishes. So, as promised, here's our first post about fossil hunting in WNY. Much of NY state was once underwater, covered by warm oceans. Aside from that, the landscape in most of our beautiful state was at least partially carved out by the glaciers, which were instrumental in the creation of breathtaking, natural wonders like Letchworth. Anyway, all that being said, NY state is rich with Devonian fossils. This particular photo is of a cluster of tubulate coral embedded into a huge slab of shale, limestone, and sandstone. We found it at an old quarry in Genesee County, which is now a park and recreational area called DeWitt Recreational Area. Old quarries are great for fossil hunting! We've found coral, brachiopods, cephalopods, and other ancient sea fossils throughout WNY in former quarries. This is an absolutely insane, undescribed, Devonian aged spiny brachiopod fossil that appears to have affinities to the genus Echinaurus. They are rare and there have only been a handful of these collected from a layer several meters above the Drotops couche at Mrakib, Morocco. An incredible amount of preparation work under microscope using airscribes and air abrasives went into this specimen to free all of the spines from the hard limestone surrounding it. This is only the fifth specimen I've seen of this brachiopod and is well prepared. Including the spines the specimen is about 3.3" wide, just the shell itself is about 1.4" wide. My first year of college in the books! I am so incredibly grateful to be part of such an amazing department and have had the opportunity to take field trips and learn about so many different incredible rocks. From the Silurian of western NY to the Mississippian of IN and the Alleghenian fold and thrust belt, I’ve gotten to see and study at some amazing places this year. During my winter break I had the chance to volunteer in the vertebrate collections at the Cleveland museum and learn about pyrite disease, and I am currently learning how to prepare fossils at Cincinnati museum center. This year has been an incredible whirlwind and having the opportunity to learn more about something I’ve loved for so long has been a dream come true. Meet the Tridenaspis: a bizarre galeaspid that swam the seas during the early Devonian in what was now southern China about 407-393 MYA. It was only about 5 cm long and even though it wasn't the most exceedingly pointy of its kind, it still had a weird kite-shaped head, large upwards-facing eyes and though it may look like a mouth, it's actually a long vertical slit-shaped nostril. Galeaspids like Tridenaspis were a bizarre lineage of the agnathans, which include today's hagfish and lampreys, and were known from Southern China, Tibet and Vietnam and were bottom-dwellers that inhabited the shallow waters of lagoons and river deltas. Their distinctive features are their nostrils, which are used for water intake and a sense of smell. Their actual mouths are on the underside of the animal's head along with the gill openings. Early members had rounded head shields, while the ones that came later developed some bizarre shapes, whether from long spines sticking out from each side, to pointed or spatula-shaped snouts. These are some of my beloved brachiopods from the Jurassic coast that I still keep in my collection (I donated the best to my local museum a year ago) and I wanted to share them since I no longer spend that much time in Gijón anymore and I kind of miss it. They aren’t anything special but I really like their simplicity. Species: From top to bottom, Lobothyris arcta (Dubar, 1931), Cuersithyris gijonensis (Dubar, 1925) and Cincta cor (Lamarck, 1819). Order: Terebratulida. Age: Upper Sinemurian. Formation: Rodiles Formation. Locality: Gijón, Asturias, Spain. 🇪🇸: El post número 100 de la cuenta tenía que ser obviamente mi salón de la fama de ‘brátulas gijonesas. Estos son algunos de los braquiópodos de la costa jurásica que aún conservo en mi colección (le pasé las mejores al MUJA hace como un año) y las quería compartir porque ya no voy tanto por Gijón últimamente y me da un poco de pena. 🇬🇧: I spent last week doing geological cartography field work and of course I spent most of it looking for fossils instead of drawing maps. This crinoid was one of the best specimens I found on the La Vid Group red beds, alongside an enrolled trilobite and several brachiopods. The Devonian aged marly limestones were full of crinoids, with Pradocrinus tests being surprisingly common considering they get broken apart pretty easily. Species: Pradocrinus baylii (de Verneuil, 1850). Family: Periechocrinidae. Order: Monobathrida. Age: Upper Emsian. Formation: Valporquero Shale/Coladilla Limestone transitional red beds, La Vid Group. Locality: Vega de Viejos, León, Spain. 🇪🇸: La semana pasada estuve de campamento de cartografía geológica y por supuesto pasé más rato buscando fósiles que haciendo mapas. Este crinoide fue uno de los mejores ejemplares que encontré en las capas rojas del Grupo la Vid, junto a un bolite y bastantes braquiópodos. Las calizas margosas de edad devónica estaban llenas de crinoideos, siendo las tecas de Pradocrinus especialmente frecuentes, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que se desarticulan muy fácilmente. These fossils have become kind of an internal joke among my classmates because their preservation is so poor they can sometimes be confused with nodules. This one is the best I’ve ever found and the only one I’m willing to post, which says a lot about the amount of Lower Carboniferous fossils I’ve shared so far. Species: Dzhaprakoceras hispanicum (Foord & Crick, 1903). Order: Goniatitida. Age: Viséan. Formation: Alba Formation (Griotte Limestone). Locality: Laciana, León, Spain. 🇪🇸: El post que salvó la cuenta. El esperado goniatite de la Fm. Alba. Estos fósiles se han convertido en una especie de coña interna entre mis compañeros por lo tremendamente feos que pueden llegar a ser, en ocasiones pudiéndose confundir con nódulos. Este es el mejor que he encontrado nunca y el único digno de ser subido aquí, lo cual dice mucho de la cantidad de fósiles del Carbonífero Inferior que me he molestado en compartir. Fleurantia denticulata, a lungfish from the Devonian period, was approximately 380-370 million years ago. It is a remarkable species with conical teeth, unlike most other lungfish, which have a dental plate. Unfortunately, there is only one known specimen, which was discovered in Canada. This week’s #fossilfriday is all about the pteriomorphians! Pteriomorphia is a subclass of marine bivalve that includes the scallops (Pectinida), true oysters (Ostreida), true mussels (Mytilida), and extinct allies. Pteriomorphians all share large lamellibranch gills to assist with feeding, unfused mantle margins, a reduced foot. Some attach to the substrate with byssal threads, such as mytilids. They all possess photoreceptors to some degree, whether rudimentary or complex. Two fossil pteriomorphians from the Givetian (late Middle Devonian) Hamilton Group are featured: Pseudoaviculopecten princeps is a large oval shell of approximately equal length and width. The shell surface is covered by regularly alternating radial rays that are crossed by even finer growth lines. This species occurs throughout the Ludlowville and Moscow Formations. Though rare, P. princeps can be found at Salmon Creek Locality 1a. This species disappeared at the end of the Givetian during the Taghanic Biocrisis. Ptychopteria (formerly Cornellites) fasciculata is a small to medium-sized shell, diagnosed by the presence of radial lines interspaced by smaller rays that all round the surface of the strongly convex left valve. The right valve, in contrast, is slightly concave or flat. The posterior wing and anterior ear are also relatively large and well developed. This species suffered severely during the Taghanic Biocrisis. Unlike P. princeps, however, P. fasiculata briefly persisted in the Frasnian (early Late Devonian) as part of the “recurrent Hamilton fauna,” and can be found in the Ithaca Formation on Cornell’s campus. —1-2: P. princeps from the Spafford Sh. How old do you think these fossils are? It’s crazy to think that these rocks have been around for 400 MILLION years! The first time we found one of these rocks, we reached out to the state paleontologist. He told us that we found fossils from the Devonian era when Ohio was completely under water. So cool!
