The 5th edition of our Collector’s Focus series of Exhibitions features works from the @hoosein.mahomed collection, and is titled “Courage is as Contagious as Fear". As part of the Cape Town Art Week, we celebrated the opening of the show with a talk between the collector and exhibition curator @darnyill. Mahomed’s collection is deeply connected to his personal experiences of growing up in a divided South Africa and the changing ways that identity politics have been investigated in the visual arts. Our #WorkoftheWeek is one of the favourites in the sculpture garden – Yinka Shonibare CBE’s “Wind Sculpture SG (III)” 2018. Made from fibreglass and shaped to look like a section of Dutch Wax Batik fabric, it pays homage to the history of a material that we commonly associate with West African visual identity, but actually came from Indonesia, and was mass produced by the Dutch. "Many people think that these are authentic 'African fabrics', as I did," says Shonibare. '"I like the 'fakeness' of that. I grew up seeing this distinctive fabric everywhere in Nigeria. But I didn't know that we were being used as a market, that it was being sold back to Africa and this mythology of perception fascinated me. The dizzying and electric world of "Heliostat: Wim Botha" is open to the public from today until January 28th at Norval Foundation, in galleries 2-8.
