We had an interesting discussion at #novelthoughtsbookclub about who has the right to tell someone else’s story. In this case, the author has told the story of real-life Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta, here portrayed as Anita de Monte, who fell (or was pushed by her husband, depending on whom you believe) from the window of her New York apartment in 1985. (A recent 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘠𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 article recounts the Mendieta family’s struggle to have a say in how the artist’s life—and death—is being portrayed.) 📖 Anita is a gifted artist who lives in the shadow of her world-famous artist husband Jack Martin. Jack is violent and narcissistic and insecure, lashing out whenever the spotlight is not on him. After Jack pushes her out the window, she returns to haunt him in the form of an avenging bat, attacking him, his girlfriend, and anyone else who seeks to hide her art and thus erase her. 📖 There is a parallel storyline about Raquel Toro, an art student who attends Brown in the late 1990s, and how her life intersects with and is influenced by that of Anita de Monte: both are brown-skinned women in a white world, and both are in love with and, for a time, defined by, privileged white men. 📖 I thought the depiction of Raquel’s relationship with Nick was well done, especially the nuanced insights into how someone can at once love you and also make you question whether anyone else ever could without their careful curation and cultivation. 📖 As for who gets to tell Mendieta’s story, one could argue that bringing an artist out of the shadows and into the light is a good thing. It’s Monday, I’m here at work, I’m vertical. Погода прекрасная, светит солнце, всё цветёт, поэтому я выкладываю пост про... триллер. Да ещё и зимний - действие происходит в канун Рождества. Но если думаете, что история праздничная, то ничего подобного. Хотя, если для вас, как для героев этой книги, праздник не праздник без экстремального квеста... Но на такой осторосюжетный экстрим даже они не подписывались. А начинается история с того, что девушке по имени Гарриэт делает предложение молодой человек из богатой семьи. Повезло? Это как сказать, ведь теперь ей надо знакомиться с его родными. Гарриэт, конечно, нервничает: семейство Холбек практически аристократия, а она лишь начинающая писательница без роду, племени и гроша за душой. А её жених Эдвард и сам-то несколько лет с семьёй не общался. Да ещё говорит, что они народ специфический. Сначала всё вроде бы неплохо. Семья как семья, хоть и богатая очень. Но не снобы, Гарриэт принимают хорошо. Вот только развлечения у них какие-то стрёмные. Например, погасить в огромном особняке свет, пустить туда актёра в реалистичном костюме монстра, и поставить детям задачу по подсказкам найти спрятанный предмет, не попавшись в лапы чудовищу. От таких забав и взрослым-то жутковато. Но когда глава семьи заявляет Гарриэт, что у него тоже есть идея для книги, и просит её оценить его работу, тут и вовсе страшно делается. Будущий свёкор мало того что описывает события, подозрительно похожие на реальные, так ещё и в убийстве признаётся. Или это тоже игра какая-то? Читателей ждут те ещё американские горки - сюжет стартует лихо и стремительно набирает обороты до самого эффектного финала. Будут и семейные тайны, и скелеты в шкафу (если бы только в шкафу...), и много экшена. А для любителей загадок, зашифрованных подсказок и квестов тут вообще раздолье. И всё это в потрясающем антураже: старинное поместье с тайными ходами, огромный лабиринт в саду, и лес вокруг. А ещё всё тут не то, чем кажется. И даже Гарриэт совсем не стандартная для таких сюжетов бедная овечка. А мораль в том, что не надо никого недооценивать. И в том, что команда - это сила, надо только правильно выбрать, с кем объединяться. Этой книги на русском пока нет, но уже вышла другая книга автора, "Что-то в в воде".
Week 17 of 2024 was meh for me reading-wise. Let’s see what I attempted to read this week. My Darling Girl by Jennifer McMahon was a 2⭐️ read. It wasn’t poorly written I just think the plot was not well executed and a lot of it was cliche. Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes was a super disappointing 2⭐️ read for me. I was excited to read a book that was going to tell the story of Medusa where she is not portrayed as a monster but Medusa winds up being more of a side character rather than the main focus. The Lying Game by Ruth Ware was a 1 ⭐️ & a DNF. I couldn’t even get through one chapter because the pacing was just too slow. None of This is True by Lisa Jewell was a 2⭐️. The characters made really stupid choices and the title gave away the plot. I kept reading hoping there would be an interesting twist but there wasn’t. The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis was a DNF & 1⭐️. The book is written in a Southern dialect that made it difficult to understand what was going on in the first chapter. Data Baby by Sussanah Breslin, 3⭐️ This was an interesting read. It’s marketed as a non fiction but it’s more of a memoir and I think that was a little evident in the writing itself. It was very interesting following her life story and how everything affected her.

Q: Znacie twórczość R. Yarros? Czytałam już kilka książek autorki i każda z nich miała w sobie coś, co mnie zachwyciło. A łączył je przede wszystkim styl pisania – lekki, a przy tym niesamowicie emocjonalny i pełen wrażliwości. Do „Każdym skrawkiem duszy” podeszłam trochę inaczej – jest to wznowienie, a nade wszystko powieść, którą autorka zadebiutowała na rynku wydawniczym. Czy ten debiut uważam za udany? Tak. I wiem, że książka do tej pory zbiera różne opinie na bookmediach. Dlatego też nieco obniżyłam swoje oczekiwania, kiedy w końcu sięgnęłam po historię Josha i Ember – może z tego powodu tak mi się podobała? A może po prostu dlatego, że po raz kolejny odnalazłam w twórczości autorki to, czego na ogół szukam w książkach – ciekawej fabuły i EMOCJI. ⭐4.25/5 🏒współpraca reklamowa @mustread.wydawnictwo 💙 Ember właśnie obchodzi swoje dwudzieste urodziny. Ember wstaje, żeby je otworzyć. Ale jej matka się sprzeciwia. Bo wie. Przeczuwa, że niespodziewani goście przekażą wiadomość, przez którą zawali im się świat. Bo jej mąż służy w wojsku i został wysłany na misję w Afganistanie. Służył. A mężczyźni, którzy stoją w mundarach za drzwiami, nigdy nie przynoszą dobrych wieści. Dzień urodzin Ember. Dzień, w którym dowiedziała się o śmi*rci swojego ojca. Josh od lat jest bardzo popularnym chłopakiem w miasteczku – hokeista, a w dodatku trener młodszej drużyny. Ale ona tak bardzo boi się zaangażować i znowu kogoś stracić. „Nie jestem gotowa, aby ktokolwiek się na mnie decydował.” Kilka pierwszych i końcowych rozdziałów przepłakałam – typowo. Choć tutaj wydawało mi się, że obędzie się bez łez. Rebecca Yarros znów mnie zaskoczyła. To, co zadziałało się na kartach powieści, niesamowicie mnie poruszyło i sprawiło, że historię Ember i Josha odczułam… każdym skrawkiem duszy. cd⤵

Potem co prawda zaczęło się robić ciekawiej, no ale ciągle odrzucały mnie te imiona i ich zrobnienia. Jak dla mnie książka była bardzo przewidywalna. Kropki połączyłam na około 98 stronie a jakoś na 230 chyba było to powiedziane. Czasami jednak się uśmiechałam do kartek. No ale jeśli lubicie książki z akcją w Polsce to możecie po nią sięgnąć. Comme beaucoup d'entre vous le savent, Morgane Moncomble est une de mes autrices préférés et quand le premier tome de sa saga seasons est sortie j'étais impatiente de découvrir ce tout nouvel univers de sa part. Et qu'elle fut ma surprise, étant une féru de dark academia j'ai évidemment apprécier ma lecture que j'ai totalement dévoré. Que se soit les personnages, absolument attachants, l'enquête, ce suspens, l'intrigue autour de ce meurtre et les suppositions que je me suis faites, tout était vraiment parfait ! J'avais comme tout le monde je suppose des doutes et des hypothèses sur certains personnages, mais je dois l'avouer je ne m'attendais pas du tout à ce plot twist. La plume de Morgane est toujours aussi belle et addictive et je tombe de plus en plus amoureuse a sa façon d'écrire a chaque roman. Évidemment, c’est le noir et blanc qui sied à l’occasion. Ou plutôt, comme Larcenet les appelle, des gris colorés. L’auteur préfère aux blancs purs, trop immaculés, des teintes légèrement jaunâtres ou bleutées. C’est moins propre. Dans cette même optique, il utilise une technique qui imite la dégradation. Il adopte une esthétique cendreuse. Ces dessins ont l’air d’être restés trop longtemps au soleil, quand ils ne paraissent pas carrément effacés par le temps. Fabuła w tej książce zmiotła mnie z planszy , była tak ciekawa, a zarazem mroczna , sceny 🔥 były również mocne i myślę, że ta książka nie należy do najłatwiejszych . Sama historia opowiada o tym, jak Alicja i jej sąsiadkom Dorotą przedostają się znów do krainy Fae za pomocą Tam Omal . Wylądowały w drewnianą stodołą w zupełnie innej krainie , gdy otworzyły drewniane drzwi Alicja przekonała się że była już tu kiedyś. Czułam, że to miejsce jest jej znane, choć wygląda trochę inaczej niż pamiętała ostatnimi razem . Po wyjściu z budynku dostrzegła ludzi zbierających się tuż przy szopie, by ich powitać. Byli to zwykli prości ludzie, którzy jak twierdził byli pod kontrolą Czarownicy ze Wschodu, która właśnie przygnietli stodołą. Ludzie dzięki nim odzyskali wolność , powiedzieli, że znajdują się na wyspie Oz, z której nie da się wydostać . Dorota spojrzała na swoje stopy i ujrzała na nich trzewiki, nie było ich tam wcześniej, pojawiły się w momencie, w którym czarownica umarła . Dorota od zawsze władała mocą, która skrywała przed światem , lecz ludzie i tak postrzegali ja jako dziwadło . Czułam, że w tej krainie może być sobą i nie musi udawać kogoś kim nie jest , czuła, że szukałam tego miejsca już długo . Nagle wioskę spowiła zielona mgła, z której wyłoniła się zielona postać ,był to czarownik z zachodu ,brat czarownica, która zmarła . Zapowiedział, że zmieści się na tym kto unicestwił jego siostrę. Była to Dorota, lecz nie mógł jej ruszyć przez 7 dni, gdyż buty, które odziedziczyła dawały jej ochronę . Alicja w wiosce napotyka tajemniczego strażnika, który cały czas ją obserwuje , postanawia się z nim skonfrontować. Dowiaduje się, że pod zbroją kryje się jej dawny porywacz ,czyli Biały królik. Morning all! I made myself go to bed super early and had a good night’s rest for the first time in ages but alas a thunderstorm woke me up and it was hard to fall asleep again. Nie brakowało w niej humoru, a moje oczekiwania zostały spełnione w 100 %. Język, którym posługuje się autorka jest lekki przez co płynnie mogłam ją czytać, a krótkie rozdziały również robiły w tym swoje. Relacja pomiędzy głównymi bohaterami – Charlotte i J. T. Na pewno od początku ich do siebie ciągnęło, pomimo tego, że przez nieporozumienie nie pałali do siebie wygórowaną sympatią. W szczególności było to widziane u Rennera. Szkoda tylko, że nie było mi dane przeczytać jego perspektywy bo mimo wszystko w ich sytuacji dobrze byłoby poznać to co siedziało mu w głowie. ☆ Zagadkowe przeniesienie w czasie może rozwiązać uczucia, ale i niedopowiezienia głównych bohaterów bardziej niż mogłoby się im wydawać. ☆ Fajnym dodatkiem było nawiazywanie do różnych seriali, filmów czy piosenek, myślę, że powszechnie nam znanym, jednak najbardziej klimat książki oddawały mi jednak ,,Dziś 13, jutro 30” i „Do wszystkich chłopców, których kochałam”. Główna bohaterka w pełni oddawała się osobowości Lary Jean i to było naprawdę cudowne, ponieważ kilka lat temu szalałam za tym filmem. Natomiast „Dziś 13, jutro 30” skojarzył mi się głównie z uwagi na niefortunną podróż w czasie oraz licznymi powiązaniami jakie tam wystąpiły. Nawiązanie do „Dirty Dancing” także zdobyło moje serce 🥹💜 Amy Lea napisała książkę, którą się pochłania i nie wiesz nawet kiedy ten cały czas minął. Naprawdę polecam ją do miłego spędzenia czasu bo naprawdę warto. Samo wydanie wygląda zachęcająco, a jak już zapoznacie się z fabuła polubicie ją jeszcze bardziej. Město strachu - Alexander Gordon Smith Na další, již předposlední díl, skvělé série Útěk z výhně jsem se velmi těšila. Předchozí díly (zejména první a třetí) byly naprosto skvělé a já byla zvědavá, kam se příběh posune a jak to vše bude dále (kdo ví, co se stalo na konci třetího dílu ví, ale kdyby náhodou někdo ještě třetí díl nečetl, pokusím se psát tak, abych nespoilerovala předchozí díly, ale u čtvrtého dílu série je to již velmi těžké). Všechny předchozí díly byly velmi čtivé (možná až na první polovinu druhého dílu), ale u tohoto dílu jsem měla trochu problém se pořádně začíst a příběh mi neubíhal tolik, jako u předchozích dílů. Navíc už je dost těžké představit si Alexe. V tomto díle se staly i jisté věci, které jsem nečekala (pokud to někdo bude chtít probrat, ať klidně napíše) a naopak jiné, které jsem čekala, se nestaly. Jsem tedy velmi zvědavá, jak vše dopadne v posledním díle. Za mě asi nejslabší díl celé série, ale pořád je to skvělé čtení. Hát, nem túl sok van még eddig, de ezeket nagyon szeretem. 🥰 Azért is volt jó így összeszedni, hogy milyen termékeim vannak Tőle, mert legalább kiderült számomra, hogy 2-2 olyan termékem van, amik egy-egy évszakhoz kötődnek. 🙈 ✨ Nagyon szeretem a könyvekkel kapcsolatos dolgokat, mint pl. könyvszűtyöket, gyertyákat, könyvjelzőket, stb. Viszont, hogy Boszi termékeit miért szeretem? (Itt most nem összességében írom, hanem ezekre a termékekre vonatkozóan.) ⭐ Mert a könyvjelzők nagyon szépek, plusz csillognak is a fólia miatt. 😍 ⭐ Mert a gyertya is szép kivitelezésű, illetve engem nosztalgiával tölt el az illata. ⭐ Mert ez a könyvszütyő kék színű, ami az egyik kedvenc színem, plusz télies hangulata van, és a tél pedig a kedvenc évszakom. Emellett jó puha, így kellően védi a könyveimet. A gombbal pedig le is tudom zárni, nehogy esetleg kiessen belőle egy könyv. 😊 ✨ Ezeken kívül van egy igazán szép és aranyos párologtatóm is, a szívecskés, de sajnos mivel az most nincs nálam, így a képen nem tudott szerepelni. Right from the start, I found it captivating. The story follows Misery, a Vampyre, who unexpectedly finds herself betrothed to a Were—none other than the Alpha himself. This situation isn’t new to Misery, but this time, her reasons for agreeing to it are deeply personal. The narrative seamlessly blends elements of convenience marriage, fated mates, and forbidden love. Lowe, the Alpha, falls swiftly and deeply for Misery, who initially guards herself with wit and sarcasm. Watching her gradually open up to those around her was a joy, revealing layers of her endearing personality. Their dynamic as a couple, along with the diverse cast of supporting characters, was truly enchanting. The book’s conclusion left me eager for more stories from this captivating world, and I hope Ali explores it further in the future.🫶🏻 ʙʀɪᴅᴇ is a fast-paced and exciting read, filled with action and intrigue. Ali’s departure from her usual contemporary romance and STEM-focused narratives into the realm of paranormal romance was a refreshing and exhilarating shift. A common theme with my recent reading seems to be fantastic reads that I regret not picking up sooner. Sara M Saleh’s Songs For the Dead and the Living was another one of these amazing books. I listened to the audiobook via the Libby app and was awed by the power and hope behind the story. This novel is a multigenerational story of one Palestinian family and their struggle for a place to belong amongst the tragedy and uncertainties of war. It follows young Jamilah and her large family from their time as refugees in Beirut and as they flee further conflict to Cairo. The story crosses generations and continents, from Palestine to Australia and vividly and emotionally portrays the realities of the Palestinian people and their displacement. With the continued atrocities in Palestine, this was an incredibly timely and important read which I learnt a lot from. It has inspired me to seek out more information and further my knowledge about the history of Palestine and I highly recommend it as an important read for all. This was my first Amy Daws book but absolutely won’t be my last. I loved both of Wyatt’s and Trista’s backstories and was instantly invested in understanding how they came to be in the position of father-to-be + surrogate. Trista’s family trauma and body issues are handled delicately and a bit of humorous banter made me fall for both of these characters that much more. Wyatt is book-boyfriend perfection: grumpy, possessive but with a big heart. He shows Trista that he wants her for who she is. This is a rom-com at its finest. It made me laugh and squeezed my heart in the best way. Also, the spice is 🌶️🌶️💥💥. I’m having my husband wear more flannel immediately. Side Note: I listened to the audiobook. The duet performances by Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton were so good. HIGHLY recommend! 📖ARC Book Review: You Know What You Did by K.T. Nguyen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Claustrophobic, riveting and intense, K.T. Nguyen had me in the palm of her hand with You Know What You Did. From the well-written unreliable narrator to the thought-provoking theme, I was left reeling as Annie devolved into paranoia. After all, it extensively delved into the suffocating impact OCD had on Annie. At the same time, however, this led to a very long, slow burn for the first half of the book. Once I got to the last one hundred pages, though, I had to hold on for dear life as the foreboding thickened and my suspicions grew. As for the characters, I felt that many of them were, for the most part, morally gray. For that reason, they came across as more authentic since no one is entirely good or evil. Told via multiple timelines that crossed decades as well as hundreds of miles, it managed to craft a thorough backstory that had me connecting with Annie in a very real way. Sadly, though, this wasn’t true for any other individuals in this book, who all felt relatively superficial despite its in-depth look at mental health and the immigrant experience. Despite that, however, I was totally won over by the climax and conclusion. Fast-paced, thoroughly disturbing and complete with a hairpin twist, it took all of my assumptions and threw them aside. Perhaps more mystery or suspenseful drama than thriller, I still got wrapped up in this nail-biting plot right from the start. I mean, how can you not love an unreliable narrator that suspects that her mother isn’t really dead? That alone made me side-eye every interaction and character. All in all, despite its slow start, this taut, emotional tale hit just the right chord by the end. Rating of 4 stars. Thank you to @ktnguyen_author and #partner @duttonbooks for my #gifted copy. Hello internet and Bookstagram/Mangagram, how are we holding up? April has been the month I've read the least so far, but since I'm working on getting my degree this year I can only guess it will get worse from here on in. I know, I know it's one day early but I'm a practicing pessimist, spiritual realist - I won't finish anything today nor tomorrow. The wrap-ups have been a new fun way for me to track and do some ✨book blogging✨. I usually try to make it mostly about the different media but I'll just spill my thoughts as it goes: I've said I read less than the previous months, and back in March I said that I hoped the reading experience would get better, and beware of what you wish for or something like that because while I didn't manage to read as much the VAST majority were absolutely bangers! For mangas I only read sequels and loved every single one but they're also hardly ever the issue during a month. I don't recall reading one I hated in a long while 😂 So, who are the bad apples in the barrel? "Under the dome" by Stephen King and "Alice" by Christina Henry. So sorry if you enjoyed either book, we can't be friends anymore. Which leaves the good ones, the juiciest, ripest, sweetest (or sour) ones. With a whopping total of six and half 5-⭐, April was probably the most successful regarding my book choices. K. Ancrum still has me in a chokehold and needs to pay for my therapy some day but I'm also relieved how much I loved "Icarus". The same goes for "Dark Rise", which was a buddy read with @annathebookdragon - which contributed to my enjoyment, I believe. Naturally, "The Sunshine Court" is easily my favourite for the whole month. And after book 2 I really had a good time with the third installment of the Raven Cycle, "Blue Lily, Lily Blue". You generally know what you're getting with a James Patterson book and this one fits the bill.
