My sister sent me some articles about history from historyfacts.com. They were so interesting that I subscribed myself. It comes once a day. I thought the following was really interesting. I never knew about the compass. “If you happen to find yourself lost in the deserts of Egypt, you might want to seek out the Great Pyramid of Giza to find your way home. The four corners of the Great Pyramid are aligned with the four cardinal directions, and with such a high degree of accuracy that experts are still trying to puzzle out how the ancient Egyptians pulled it off. The pyramid’s alignment is accurate within one-fifteenth of a degree, a measure that’s difficult to achieve even with modern technology, and especially for a structure so massive (in its prime, the Great Pyramid stood 481 feet tall). Historians theorize that ancient engineers may have used shadows cast by the sun or the location of stars in the night sky to orient the massive structure. All done with this commission! Now she’s ready to be trimmed and framed! Client and I are looking at a different frame than what is in the second slide. But I really want to use that frame eventually! Picked it up at a vintage market. Had fun playing with this color combination: raw umber violet/potters pink, cascade green and tundra violet. 11x14 original watercolor on Arches 🪸 🎨 I painted the tentacles, using cascade green by Daniel Smith. It is such a rich green, and when the air hits it, it really granulates and separates into a rusty brown and a pure, deep blue, giving that grainy feel that is perfect for sea creatures. What I like to do is let different wells in my watercolor palette have different levels of mixture. So, I will keep it mixed in one water well and let it separate in another so that I can get that truly “mottled” look as I paint. I feel like this lends itself to a murky, underwater feel!! The first alcove featuring our work at @coralspringsmoa is the latest in our ongoing "BOIL NOTICE" project. Created using the most recent data, the installation portrays the frequency of boil water advisories in Broward County during the months of February and March 2024. The installation consists of 60 sculptures made using salvaged plumbing fixtures and either plant based resin or pigmented concrete. I learned a lot from my art professors back in art school. One of the best ideas they gave me was not to be overly precious about my art materials. One of my professors used to buy Rives BFK (high quality rag paper) by the ream. It is still my favorite paper. It is quite expensive. He never let his supply get down to just a few papers. He said that having one or two sheets left made them precious and that would thwart his creative process. It would make him stiff and worried about making mistakes. If he had a big stack of paper, he didn’t have to worry. My painting professors would do the same with paints, canvas and brushes. They would put out plenty of paint on the pallet before each session. They never worried about waste. They had jars and jars of brushes, and new ones for the future. These were very valuable lessons for me as an artist. To this day I have large inventories of brushes, canvas and paints, and frames, ready for use. I wait for sales to stock up. I never think of being miserly about my materials. You would be surprised at how much this enhances my creative process. I never worry about messing up because I have plenty of materials to try again. The reward is far more valuable than the cost of materials. I am grateful for many lessons I learned in art school. Country painters have a wonderful life....

Debra began her studies at the Sam Fox College of Art at Washington University and continued on to get a Masters in Art Therapy at Goddard College in Vermont. Debra loves the complexities of collage and mixed media. She aims to create visual dialogues about our environment and the meditative qualities of nature. Debra has always felt the importance of being active in her community. She worked with Creative Tampa Bay as it launched its’ economic development mission to foster a region of creatives. In 2004 she formed a non-profit, Forward Thinking Initiatives, that began with a mission to teach entrepreneurship to teens but worked its way into teaching “Artrepreneurship”. In addition to creating fine art, Debra uses her original mixed media pieces as surface design on wearables such as silk scarves, silk and chiffon kimonos and bags. She loves to collaborate with other artists and has worked on a number of pieces with her cousin and formed the wearable art company, Campbell and Cope.
