I really loved Hockney’s giant landscape that was split into many small paints, giving it that window pane quality. (Also large painting storage: in this economy?!) During these strange times of lockdowns, we all know the experience of feeling lonely. And for many of us, having moved to a new city or a new country, making friends is even more challenging. I have felt frustrated and sad about it, but in missing my human friends I have also experienced a deepening in the friendship with Jesus. Jesus says in John 15:15 ‘I have called you friends, for everything I learned from my Father I have made known to you.’ Friendship with Jesus has become a bigger theme in my life and I try to embrace more moments of silence and solitude during walks. If we dare to leave our devices for a while, this time is actually an opportunity to hear more from Jesus. It can be a fruitful time. As Henri Nouwen said: ‘With God the desert of loneliness is turned into a garden of solitude.’ And one of the things I love about Jesus is that he shares more with me than I can and want to keep for myself. It’s supposed to be shared and passed on.
