Emma Grey has written a wonderful story about finding love again after loosing the love of your life. Grab your tissues you will need them! It has been a long time since a book has had me still crying 10 minutes after finishing. I listened to the Audiobook along with reading the physical book. The narrator Leeanna Walsman is brilliant, if you are able to get your hands on the audiobook you will not be sorry, Leeanna is able to have you immersed in Kate Whittaker’s (our main characters) story of love and grief. Side Note to @emmagreyauthor , thank you for writing such an amazing story that I will be reading over over again (ahh I am still crying 15 minutes on 😢) you are definitely an auto buy author for me. It's set up exactly like a traditional contemporary romance between coworkers that need to fake a relationship to get out of a bind, but they are also both wolf shifters in a world where shifters are completely commonplace and no longer members of secretive packs. BOOK REVIEW 🌴 This duo @christinalauren can do no wrong in my book!! This book centers around Anna, a starving artist that just lost her steady job. She gets a spontaneous visit from her ex husband. But she knows little about her ex-husband, “West. “She married him for subsidized housing in college and then they went on their separate ways. Well, she thinks. Actually, they’ve been married this whole time in order for “West” to get his inheritance. Now, years later, he’s back in the picture asking her Anna to attend his sister’s lavish destination wedding with him to “sell” the marriage. This is a laugh-out loud, steamy but adorable romcom. It took me a bit to be interested in either character but then I was HOOKED! The atmospheric vacation vibe was spot on. I was on vacation when I read this and even I was like “I want to be on this island with all these perks immediately.” I loved seeing Anna’s character bloom with confidence and getting to see West come out of his shell. This may be my favorite book find in a very long time. 📖💗 What a treasure! Naomi and I spent most of Friday sitting in bookstores and I found this 1979 copy of The Magic Years of Beatrix Potter by Margaret Lane in the children’s section at Half-Price Books. I was so surprised to see it there too — for one thing, it’s a non-fiction book meant more for adult reading, and two, the condition is so fine that it would have fit perfectly in the store’s nostalgia section. 😍 It looks and feels highly collectible, even if it isn’t worth a lot in terms of dollar value. Anyway! I’m so happy I stumbled across it. The book is absolutely stunning from cover to cover, and even better, it’s wrapped in high quality mylar (which I LOVE) so it’s greatly protected. I just cannot get over how gorgeous this book is… I haven’t come across it in my book adventures before, which makes this find all the more special. I always prefer finding books like this organically rather than through the internet or other means. Magic Years gives a more in depth look at Beatrix Potter’s artistic gifts when it came to her study of zoology and botany. Margaret Lane had already written a biography about Potter, but this book delves deeper into the artist’s more secluded life and private thoughts. I’ve acquired a small collection of Beatrix Potter books throughout childhood and adulthood, and it’s always influenced my hobbies and style. So I just love learning more about her! THE ENCHANTED APRIL by Elizabeth von Arnim (1922) Two Hampstead housewives, barely acquainted, decide to rent an Italian villa for the month of April to escape their dreary lives. Mrs. Wilkins is younger and more idealistic, while Mrs. Arbuthnot is deeply religious and dutiful. Both are unhappily married. To defray costs, they place an ad and end up recruiting Lady Caroline Dester - longing to escape her stifling aristocratic milieu - and Mrs. Fisher, an older widow who is mourning the end of the Victorian era. The gorgeous Portofino landscape is restorative, although tensions between the women threaten to intrude on their peace. And, at the back of Mrs. Wilkins’ and Mrs. Arbuthnot’s minds is the fact of their husbands - can they leverage the Italian vacation into a way to repair their marriages? I really loved this; not much happens, and it’s slow, but the shifting dynamics between the four women were fascinating to me. I really love ~pre-1970 women’s writing about marriage, domesticity, and duty, so this hit the spot. The descriptions of the natural beauty are lovely and definitely made me crave an Italian holiday. Though it’s a slow and reflective novel, there is a lot of humour and irony and, at the end, a sort of small comedy of errors plot twist. The character development - which is, really, the driving force of the novel - is subtle and masterful. ♤♡♧◇ Book Review ◇♧♡♤ Five Survive by Holly Jackson ~19-04-2024 to 22-04-2024~ I went on a roadtrip recently and this was the first book I though of to bring with me as it's set in an RV! 🏕 I loved this book! 🤩 The pacing was fantastic, the foreshadowing was great and some of the twists at the end got me double guessing my own thoughts. I loved all the characters and how the madness started when they realised they were all truly trapped by a sniper in the RV. 🚙 Throughout the book there were a few revelations about certain characters 👀 that I did guess before hand but it was great to see everything come together at the end. Once the evidence started to line up it just proved a lot of my assumptions right which was great! 🗒🧩 ⚠️ Spoilers Ahead ⚠️ My only issue was when Oliver threw Red outside and the rest of the occupants of the RV rescued her, why did they not restrain him by this point? Every so often I would think to myself, we wouldn't be having this situation if he was already restrained but apart from that the book was great! ♠️Question♣️: If you were trapped in an RV by a sniper do you think you could escape? Have you ever been influenced to read a book that related to your current situation? ♥My Answer♦️: I would probably tape all the books I bought with me to myself like armour and run like the wind. 📚 #BookReview - #TheMurderAtTheVicarage by @officialagathachristie #ReadChristie2024 - April Selection (1930s) April’s Read Christie selection kicks off the next decade, with 1930s THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE, the first of the Marple novels. This book really is a fine example of Christie’s plotting prowess, as it’s a beautifully layered and intricate mystery with a wonderfully logical conclusion. Along the way, almost everyone becomes a suspect and it’s a fantastic example of literary misdirection and surprising plot twists (before they were the backbone of crime fiction marketing!). I throughly enjoyed trying to follow along with the suspicions and attempt to form my own theories. As always, Christie expertly veils the truth, so that the final revelation comes as a surprise and yet feels so blindingly obvious. This is a very neat mystery, which ties up all the loose ends that have come unravelled along the way. It’s resplendent with suspects - virtually everyone has something against victim, Protheroe - which allows for so many potential motives. One thing that has surprised me with the Marple mysteries I’ve read so far, is how little she appears in the novel. This is no different, as the story is told from the perspective of the local vicar, Clement. As such a key character, I always expect Marple to be more prominent. Having said that, what this does mean, is that her appearances are noteworthy and it’s clear that nobody can match her intellect or intuition in St. Mary Mead! Telling the story from the Vicar’s perspective does allow for a lot of wit to be interspersed between the mystery. Clement is a very humorous character and I enjoyed his observations and some of his slightly unchristian remarks. This blend of wit and mystery makes THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE just as readable and enjoyable today as it was upon release in 1930!
Immediately dumped everything I’ve been doing, including my 9-5 and the book I’ve been reading because that’s what I do every time I get to read @amandajayatissa’s work. So was it worth it? Hell yeah! Loved how she navigated through Sri Lankan folklore to tell us Amara’s story, the daughter of Kapuwa in a coastal village in Down South. Ezioma took pity on an old friend Dili to help him get his green card in the states by marrying him. It was supposed to be a marriage of convenience but Ezi has always loved Dili simce they were young and this was her chance to set things right but it was the wrongest time as Dili had a fiancée, Onyeka whom he really loved back in Nigeria. . . Playing husband and wife is a sweet thing but eventually Onyeka came visiting and the marriage turned into a new dimension. The drama, the fights, the emotions and the story were all stunning. The touch on cancer and the explicit explanation of the treatment made me emotional. It made me think of how many men would stay by their wives in trying times and care for her the way I read about. . . Happy Canadian Independent Bookstore Day! Of course I barely needed an excuse to hit up @thecityandthecitybooks with my mom in tow. And I got a delicious mini cupcake too! My picks: THEOREM by Pier Paolo Pasolini (trans. Stuart Hood) - I took an Italian cinema class in 2015, which wasn’t that great, but the films were all excellent. TEOREMA was my favourite of them all - perfect experimental late 60s cinema; a queer Marxist allegory! I didn’t know until pretty recently that Pasolini released it as a novel and film in the same year. This will, I think, be my second time reading a book that was adapted as a film by the author, the first being Ousmane Sembène’s XALA. FURY by Clyo Mendoza (trans. Christina MacSweeney) - Look, I see weird translated fiction and I’m immediately sold. Mom’s picks: KNIFE by Salman Rushdie - Self explanatory, I think! MY FAVOURITE PLANT: WRITERS AND GARDENERS ON THE PLANTS THEY LOVE, edited by Jamaica Kincaid - I spotted this one (Jamaica Kincaid!), and since my mom is a gardener, it was a no brainer for her. This was originally published in 1999. Several of Kincaid’s works are being republished this year; I’m holding out for MY BROTHER, about her brother’s death from AIDS related illness.
