The album was a massive success for the band, spawning three of their most successful singles: the title track, "Rock'n Me", and "Take the Money and Run". The basic tracks for Fly Like an Eagle were recorded at the same time as those for the band's next album, 1977's Book of Dreams. In my opinion, this is the group's strongest album from top to bottom. Every track is immaculately written, recorded, and produced. It easily stands as the pinnacle of the galactic blues rock Miller had been pioneering. Photography for the album is credited to Susan McCardle and David Stahl. In the cover photograph, Miller is shown playing a black left-handed Fender Stratocaster. The guitar was originally ordered by Jimi Hendrix, but the guitarist had died not long after it was ordered, leading Miller to claim the guitar and re-string it right-handed. He is probably best known for his work as drummer-percussionist, backup singer, and co-composer for The Steve Miller Band. He has also played with the Greg Kihn Band. Mallaber was the main studio drummer for Eddie Money for most of his earlier recordings and has played on some Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison solo albums. He was also in the 1974 Brian DePalma film Phantom of the Paradise; in addition to performing on the film's soundtrack he is seen in the film as the drummer for the Juicy Fruits, the Beach Bums, and The Undeads. In addition to drums, Mallaber plays vibraphone on the Morrison records. It's 2023, twenty years since we lost Warren Zevon and his unique talents. I only own half of his studio albums and one of his two live releases, a nice start but also a reminder to hunt down the rest. This eponymous record, filled with catchy lyrics and rousing tunes, is his sophomore record, predating his breakout "Excitable Boy". Check out the incredible contributors in the credits! Warren was deeply respected for his songwriting. Jackson Browne produced, and he had a great Rolodex. Hard to pick favorites but I'll try. "Frank And Jesse James" is an ode to Missouri's famous outlaw antiheros with a memorable chorus. "Hasten Down The Wind", "Carmelita", "Mohammed 's Radio" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" were FM hits for the great Linda Ronstadt, done here by the man who penned them. "Mama Couldn't Be Persuaded" is a great uptempo rocker. Finally, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" was Warren's credo, known as he was for his mercurial mood swings and intense rock and roll animal lifestyle. The rockers are stronger performances than the ballads, but the songwriting is the star. Recommended. Steve Miller Band's 10th studio album - Book of Dreams!! Original 1977 copy 3 singles were released from the album in 1977 with the 1st single, "Jet Airliner", being the most successful. The album peaked in the top 10 of the trade charts in 4 countries, including Canada where the album topped RPM magazine's 100 Albums chart. The album has gone on to become one of the group's most successful studio outings. The songs on this album were recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco, California; the basic tracks were recorded at the same time as the basic tracks for Fly Like an Eagle. The sessions were produced by the group's leader, Steve Miller, who had been producing the group's albums since Number 5 in 1970. John Palladino was the album's executive producer and the recording engineer was Mike Fusaro. The winged horse art was created by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse, who were credited as "Kelly and Mouse".
