Today was pretty special… I attended the Lake Oswego Council meeting as they honored Jeannie McGuire for her lifelong achievement in our City’s Historic Preservation 🏛️. I met Jeannie a couple of years back while serving for Meals on Wheels. We were just catching up, and I asked her about her service background. The stories she shared since being a part of the historical society since 1971, the year I was born, spurred a passion in me. I asked her advice on how I could make an impact, and she encouraged me to apply for the Boards & Commissions. So, I did! Now I’ve been on the Historic Resource Advisory Board for the last year, serving alongside some of the most amazing humans. Thanks to Jeannie, a woman who has given so much to our community, her dedication is unparalleled. The support she received today still brings tears to my eyes 😢. Be like Jeannie—believe in something with such a passion that an entire community will show up and support you. Every. Single. Day. We owe her so much for what she has fought to preserve: the Trueblood House, the iron works, and so much more. I am truly honored to know her and to say she has made a significant impact on my life as well 🥰

One of the most underrated structures in the state of Kentucky lies on the banks of the Ohio just outside downtown Louisville 🌊🏛️ The Louisville Water Tower opened in 1860, and is the oldest ornamental water tower in the world 🤯 Unfortunately, due to a tornado and a new pumping station, the water tower stopped all operations in 1909. In 2010, the building and water tower were renovated and in 2014, the Louisville WaterWorks Museum opened to the public 🙌 #HistoriaPassport #Historia #History #Historical #HistoryLovers #Passport #Adventure #Museums #HistoricalSociety #HistoryBuff #HistoryNerd #HistoryFacts #HistoricalBuilding #Guidebook #TravelGuide #Travel #KentuckyHistory #Kentucky #Bluegrass #Louisville

On this day (May 21st) in 1970, students from Warren Elementary School worked to clean up around the pond at the Wellesley Farms Station. The group was authorized by the Board of Selectmen and led by David White, a fifth-grade teacher at Warren. After the students collected the debris seen here, the Public Works Department helped them out by collecting the debris for disposal. #wellesley #wellesleyma #wellesleyhistory #localhistory #localhistorymatters #supportlocalhistory #historicalsociety #nonprofitorganization #wellesleyhistoricalsociety #fromthecollection #fromthearchives #communityservice #communitypartnerships #wellesleypublicschools #wellesleyelementaryschools #springcleanup #wellesleyfarmsrailroadstation #wellesleyfarms #1970s #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory

Did you know🧠 *Belle Haven* This historical cottage was originally built on the City Pier in 1920. In 1926, the cottage fell into the bay. It was pulled from the waters and became a family home on the Island for almost 50 years. In 2001, the cottage was moved to the Historical Park to save it from demolition. Lovingly restored in 2006 with money raised by the AMI Historical Society, the Belle Haven Cottage is now furnished with heirlooms and antiques demonstrating early island life.

Samuel Trimble — Hillborn Darlington House The Trimble-Darlington House was built c. 1783 for Samuel Trimble as a two story stone field house on 43 acres that once belonged to John Hatton. Samuel Trimble was a hatter by trade. It is alleged that the Marquis de Lafayette visited the Trimble family in 1824 at this house during his farewell tour! The property stayed within the Trimble family until 1836 when it was sold to Nathan Middleton. Middleton farmed the land until 1850 when he put the house up for sale. It was described as being a two story stone house with a front piazza, multiple parlors, a dining room, and a kitchen. Also on the property was a pump well, a stone and frame barn with stables and granaries,, carriage, straw, and corn outbuildings. The farm was valued at $5,000 in 1850. Middleton sold the property to William Scattergood who owned the property until his death in 1857. The property was then sold at a public sale to Dr. Hillborn Darlington, a local physician. Dr. Darlington operated his practice out of the home, and later used the house as a nursing home. His son, Dr. Horace Darlington, owned the property after him. Dr. Horace Darlington’s son Canby Darlington, organized the Concord Fire Department and was at one time the Fire and Police Chief for Concord Township. The home and land remained in the Darlington family until 1948. The property is now subdivided into private apartments, and not open to the public. Concord Township Historic Resource #120

It’s #NationalPreservationMonth, and down on #HistoricJeffersonStreet in Nashville there is a Renaissance in preservation for the only place in the U.S. where nearly 90 #BlackOwnedBusinesses, 4 #HBCUs, 100 year old Black Owned Bank live and more. My friends Carl and Angie Davis Jones hosted the bimonthly meeting of the Maury County Historical Society today - complete with guided tours of their 1835 spectacular work-in-progress home. (You may recognize it from an earlier post when I attended their Mule Day picnic.) With over 6,000 square feet, they have worked tirelessly renovating and restoring it room by room - already completing the back half. The front rooms still show the condition the entire house was in when they purchased it six years ago. In fact, those areas might look familiar to some as they have rented them out for music videos (Luke Bryan), photo shoots, etc. What a special treat on a Sunday afternoon. #maurycountytn #columbiatn #ronyorkartist #historichomes #southerncharm #smalltown #historicalsociety #1800s #hometour

In Honor of Jewish Heritage Month... remembering Beth Hillel Synagogue. Beth Hillel was founded in 1952 as a Jewish Community Center by 7 Jewish families in the Hartford area. It was located on Granby Street in Hartford. In 1955, having grown to 200 families, they erected the building on 1095 Blue Hills Ave and officially became a Synagogue. In 1964, the congregation consisted of 220 families and they began construction of the building at 160 Wintonbury Ave. Beth Sholom Synagogue of Hartford merged with Beth Hillel in 1969. In 2017 Beth Hillel merged with the Emanuel Synagogue of West Hartford. Beth Hillel had five Rabbi's: Louis Kaplan, Irving Spielman, Philip Lazowski, Edward Friedman and Gary Atkins. The building at 160 Wintonbury Ave is now home to the Chinese Baptist Church of Greater Hartford. [Images 3 & 4] There is still a Synagogue in Bloomfield. It is B'nai Tikvoh Sholom at 180 Still Rd. In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, cultural institutions have a unique opportunity to leverage the power of digital heritage. By embracing digital tools and strategies, these institutions can not only preserve our past but also become champions for a sustainable future. Digital advocacy allows institutions to extend their influence beyond physical walls. Integrating sustainability messages into online exhibits and educational materials creates a powerful narrative. Showcasing how cultural heritage can inspire solutions for environmental issues encourages a sense of responsibility for preserving both our history and our planet. Furthermore, hosting online workshops, talks, and events focused on sustainable practices creates a platform for community engagement. #ConceptCulture #CultureofOrigins #HeritageRestoration #CulturalPreservation #SustainableTourism #CulturalDiversity #HistoricalSignificance #EventPromotion #DigitalMarketing #HeritageSites #CulturalEvents #ArchitecturalHeritage #EconomicDevelopment #CulturalEducation #HistoricalSociety #MuseumLife #Travelgram #HistoryBuff #InstaTravel #HeritageLover #CulturalExchange #EnduringLegacy #TimelessTreasures #Storytelling #Placemaking #Revitalization #CulturalLandscape #AuthenticExperiences #CulturalAwareness

US member Patrick Moody represented The John Hampden Society at the book launch of “The Nasty Cup: Coins and Medals of the English Civil War” by Benjamin D.R. Hellings, the Jackson-Tomasko Associate Curator of Numismatics at @yaleartgallery The event was well attended, with discussions ranging from the rarity of the coins (one was a 1652 New England Shilling minted in Boston) to Mr. Hellings’ initial interest in numismatics. From the Yale University Art Gallery: One of the most exceptional numismatic objects in the world, the Yale University Art Gallery’s Naseby Cup was commissioned by John and Mary Frances Fitzgerald, Lord and Lady of the Manor at Naseby, in Northamptonshire, England. It commemorates the Battle of Naseby on June 14, 1645, during which the forces of the English Parliament, led by Oliver Cromwell and Sir Thomas Fairfax, defeated the Royalist army of King Charles I. Crafted by silversmiths Charles Reily and George Storer and completed in 1839, the intricately decorated Victorian cup stands more than two feet tall and features 72 coins, medals, badges, and counters from around the time of the English Civil War period (1642–51). Many of these numismatic pieces are rare, such as a New England shilling from 1652 and a copy of an original 1644 Oxford crown of Charles I, which depicts the king on horseback and a view of the city. Congratulations to Mr. Hellings for a fantastic book launch! Since Meta has helpfully reminded us that it's World Baking Day, we thought this was the perfect opportunity to share this image, taken from a glass negative. Labelled only "Interior of Fred Marson's bakery," we're not sure of the year--reach out if you know! What we do know is that in 1897 J.S. Marson was running a bakery at the "head of steamboat wharf" in Boothbay Harbor, so it seems that Marson's was a family business. Along with a salesroom selling breads, cakes, cookies, buns, and pies, there was a "daintily arranged dining room". It was so popular that Marson had a lunch and dinner service. There they served full meals, baked goods made on premises, and ice cream, with "every dish being prepared in a careful and appetizing manner". Sounds like a place that would be popular even today if it was still around! I don't know about you, but I'm off to eat a celebratory cookie. We were thrilled to see this morning that our friends at Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) highlighted the 300th anniversary of the 1724 Chester Courthouse, an architectural gem of Delaware County! PHMC is working hard with local historic groups like DCHS to keep this historic courthouse open to the public! Follow the link to see more. Nicholas Newlin-Casper Sharpless House The Newlin-Sharpless House is a large stone mansion built c. 1698 with major additions in 1840 and 1979. It sits high upon a hill that overlooks the Newlin Grist Mill complex and Route 1. Nicholas Newlin was the founder of the Newlin Grist Mill along the west branch of the Chester Creek. He built the original section of this home to live in. The property eventually passed to Nathaniel Newlin, and then to Thomas Newlin Esq. and Justice of the Peace in 1798. The home at that time was described as being a 60 x 20 foot two story stone structure with attached stone kitchens. The property at that time also contained two barns, a frame carriage house, a frame shop, a stone springhouse, and a stone ice house. Casper Sharpless, also a one time owner of the Newlin Grist Mill, purchased the property in 1848, and built an addition to the home. Casper’s landholdings grew to 351 acres. In addition to owning and operating the grist mill, Casper Sharpless also served as the school director for the public school system in Concord from 1836-1839. The property then passed to the Hill family. John Hill purchased the Newlin Grist Mill in 1870 from the estate of Casper Sharpless, and continued milling operations. The home eventually fell into ruin in the 20th century, but was saved by the Vadaz family in the later half of the 20th century who completed major reconstruction projects. This property is a private residence, and not open to the public. Concord Township Historic Resource #182

A shout-out to Lynwood and Heritage Park! A fun place to visit to see Lynwood’s history. I went over to see the Northwest Veterans Museum (thinking ahead to Memorial Day) in the Wickers Building. But then got to see the history of the General Store that played such an important role for the community, as well as the Wickers family. Then I went over to enjoy the beautifully restored Interurban Car, an example of early “light rail.” From there I poked around the Superintendent’s Cottage from the Demonstration Farm that existed there. I could have stopped in Humble House and the Sno-Isle Genealogical Society, but then who knows when I would have left? #lynnwoodwashington #heritagepark #historicalmuseum #veteransmuseum #historicalsociety

As the Edmonds-South Snohomish County Historical Society, we are incredibly grateful for the efforts of the Human Centered Design and Engineering masters students from the University of Washington who have been working with us this year. They have done an amazing job of identifying both opportunities for the Museum to grow, as well as innovative approaches to the opportunities. The Kids Gallery has been so successful as an idea that we are baking it into the plans for how the Museum will evolve. And we now have a mascot, Chippy the Beaver, that embodies the spirit of the early Edmonds loggers and the town they built. Thanks to Crys, Angela, Celina, and Rohan, and our very best on your future careers! Based on our experience, your careers will be amazing! #edmondshistory #edmondswa #historicalsociety #historicalmuseum

On Wednesday 8th May, @highst.ashbourne launched a new pop up Exhibition opened called the Timeless Treasures of Ashbourne. ✨ They kicked things off with a official launch event, open to the public, which was a great success. The exhibition, developed in partnership with the local group @ashbournehistoricalsociety, transformed The Crescent on High Street into a vibrant space dedicated to showcasing Ashbourne town's rich history. It featured captivating images, informative displays, and much more. This space not only honours the past but also illuminates where we stand today and the exciting future envisioned for Ashbourne. 🏛️🔍📸 The exhibition includes a reflection area, vision and memory board also to allow visitors to contribute their memories of Ashbourne. It is an excellent way to engage with the locals and hopefully help attract some extra football to the area. 👥 #exhibition #local #historicalsociety #AshbourneTownCentre #HighStreetAshbourne #starpropertyuk #starstoneproperty @starstonepropertygroup
