City of Terrace Fire Department Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine Terrace, B.C. This newly refreshed patch from the City of Terrace Fire Department has the Kermode Bear (Spirit Bear) front and center on it, surrounded by pristine wilderness and coupled with the department's words to live by: Honour, Sacrifice, Courage and Duty. These words are symbolically placed on the bottom of the patch as they form the base of the Terrace Fire Department's core values. Unknown to many, the striking colour of the Spirit Bear is caused by an uncommon recessive genetic trait. Referred to as moksgm’ol, meaning “white bear,” by the Tsimshian coastal First Nation, Spirit Bears play an important role in local culture here along with Indigenous-led ecotourism in the area. The City of Terrace lies just to the east of the confluence of the Kitsumkalum River into the Skeena River. On local B.C. Highway 16, junctions branch northward for the Nisga'a Highway to the west and southward for the Stewart–Cassiar Highway to the east. Located at 3125 Eby Street, the City of Terrace Fire Department consists of 10 full-time firefighters, two Chief Officers, and a Clerk/Dispatcher. Complementing the career staff, the department strives to have up to 30 volunteer firefighters to train, and work alongside paid staff to provide fire prevention, suppression, rescue, pre-hospital care, and hazards mitigation. This month, Terrace Fire Department has had a significant advancement in their operational capabilities with the successful deployment of their newly issued S.C.B.A. (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) keeping their department on the cutting edge of health and safety for their firefighters. What’s the biggest #salmon you’ve ever seen? How about one over 40 pounds with massive red roe the size of marbles? For people who live near #wannock River off B.C.’s central coast, massive salmon are a common sighting, according to this new video released by Youtube channel Great Bear Tales, which shows off some of the largest #ChinookSalmon in the world. In fact, if a salmon is caught over 40 pounds from Alaska to California, there is a “90% chance it's from the Wannock or the #Kitsumkalum river,” the video explains. The massive fish are dependent upon the local Percy Walkus Hatchery in #Wuikinuxv Village, Rivers Inlet, which ensures the survival of the salmon fry. Each spring, community members release fry into the Wannock River. The fry are raised in large tanks and then transferred via nets to garbage pails. The oxygenated pails are driven down to the river. Then, the fry are released into the water after a prayer from an elder of the Wuikinuxv First Nation. Volunteer Dawson Raden says in the video, “All of a sudden we are standing there next to these big tubs, and there’s countless Chinook salmon. I was in awe. This is nuts. I’ve never seen anything like it.” The hatchery is part of the federal government’s Salmonid Enhancement Program, which “aim[s] to rebuild vulnerable salmon stocks, provide harvest opportunities, work with First Nations and coastal communities in economic development, and improve fish habitat to sustain salmon populations.” The Wuikinuxv First Nation have established and operated similar hatcheries on their territory since 1935. In recent years, however, salmon populations have been collapsing, devastating communities in the region that depend on them for food and economic security. This has been attributed to over-fishing and mismanagement of the stocks in Rivers and Smith Inlets.
