After 138 years, this First Nations house post will be returned to the Gitxaala Nation, located on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. Christian missionaries forced the Indigenous leaders to convert to Christianity, while simultaneously decimating their culture. This totem was one of four that stood in the Grizzly Bear long house. This, and all others like it, we’re to be cut down and burned, along with other Gitxaala cultural belongings. But miraculously, this one survived the colonizer’s destruction. It was sold and used inappropriately for decades before ending up in storage at Harvard University. But at long last, it is on its way home. It is believed to be the only one of its type to survive. Almost ten feet tall and weighing just under 400 pounds, the pole is black with red details. It depicts a grizzly bear and her cubs, which are the two main crests of the house within the nation. About ten years ago I got the chance to see the First Nations village of Lax Kw’alaams in BC, Canada. At the time they had an abundant supply of ground fish and it was exciting to see the village supported by a brand new facility to process seafood. I remember the boats would collect over 200,000 lbs of whiting in about four hours. Anyone that knows me knows I have a fascination with forensic psychology, true crime and indigenous culture. I had heard about Highway 16. But now I have been here. And it is real! Nearly every Canadian I have spoken to know it as the Highway of Tears. The Highway of Tears is a 725-kilometre corridor of Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert in BC Canada. It has been the location of many, many missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Poverty in the area, in particular, leads to low rates of car ownership and mobility; so hitchhiking is often the only way for many to travel vast distances to see family or go to work, school, or seek medical treatment. Another factor leading to abductions and murders is that the area is so isolated and remote, with soft soil and carnivorous scavengers to carry away human remains. These factors make it so much easier to commit these violent attacks, as the murderers and abductors feel a sense of impunity and the ability to easily carry out their crimes and hide evidence. According to Human Rights Watch — an international non-governmental organisation that conducts research and advocacy on human rights — British Columbia has the highest rate of unsolved murders of Indigenous women and girls in Canada. We pulled up at a service station in a small community and there were three posters of missing women and girls. All disappeared this August. We passed a number of billboards stating: Girls don’t hitchhike - this is the Highway of Tears. Thank you to Mr. Nelson for a great lesson and picture! "Long ago Txaamsm and Lagaboola had an argument about where the ooligans should run, and they opted to have a contest to see who would get it. They held a contest where each would throw a spear at a plank with a knot hole in it. The one who would make it through the hole would be the winner and from that day forth the ooligans would only run in their river. Txaamsm represented the Skeena River and Lagaboola represented the Nass River. All Indigenous Canadian garage and country band, The Chieftones came to my attention when they were included on the wonderful 2014 boxset collection “Native North America” Light in the Attic put out. Excited to finally grab a spectacular copy of their 1966 song “I Shouldn't Have Did What I Done” in its original Cuca label sleeve ❤️. The four members were of the Tsimshian Indian Nation of British Columbia. As their spotlight increased they ended up moving to Nashville via a stop in Wisconsin and took on a more country aspect and kept going for many years managed out of Nashville. Crazily enough, Walt Disney saw them play once and was so impressed he gave the band his pet mountain lion?!?! (which of course is all sorts of problematic unto itself). Apparently the mountain lion traveled around on tour with the band. The missing and murdered Indigenous women epidemic (MMIW) is an issue currently affecting Indigenous people in Canada and the United States, including the First Nations, Inuit, Métis (FNIM), and Native American communities. It has been described as a Canadian national crisis and a Canadian genocide. In various tribes, red is known to be the only color spirits see. It is hoped that by wearing red, we can call back the missing spirits of our women and children so we can lay them to rest. The Highway of Tears is a 720-kilometre (450 mi) corridor of Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, which has been the location of many murders and disappearances beginning in 1970. It was Fontaine's case that finally led to the launch of a national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in December 2015. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), there are 1,181 cases in Canada, based on data from a national operational overview conducted in 2014. The RCMP acknowledges 18 murders and disappearances in its list of Highway of Tears cases, dating from 1969 to 2006 (the RCMP also include women who have disappeared from Highways 97 and 5 in British Columbia).
