Excited to share another composition where I've rescored a scene from Star Trek! Drawing strong inspiration from Ligeti's 'Atmospheres,' who in turn was influenced by Elektronische Musik and additive synthesis, my goal was to transform orchestral instruments almost into sine waves, creating a collage of independent, discreet compositional modules. Microtonality and micropolyphony, tension chords and clusters, with melodic lines subtly shifting between instruments, were the ingredients to help create an eerie, otherworldly, space-age ambiance—something that could potentially highlight the exploration of the unknown. Looking back, the score was quite a challenge to write and edit given the lack of time, but it was very rewarding in the end. Según Ligeti, sus composiciones, que «se escapan a toda categoría, no son ni tonales ni atonales ni posmodernas», tienen en común que «surgen siempre de una idea central sencilla y conducen a la extrema complejidad». 🎓📖📚 ¿Sabías que Ligeti era prácticamente desconocido hasta que Stanley Kubrick utilizó magistralmente, pero sin permiso, su música? El autor de Lontano y la ópera Le grand macabre conectó con el gran público a través de la banda sonora de 2001: una odisea del espacio. Ligeti, por entonces tan pobre que hacía dedo para ir a sus propios conciertos, recibió la noticia de que su música estaba en la película de Kubrick, a quien demandó por la modesta suma de 1 dólar... György Ligeti was born on May 28, 1923, in Dicsöszentmárton (today named Tîrnaveni) in Romania. He made his career in Hungary until 1956, when he escaped to Vienna. There he was influenced by contact with more experimental Western techniques of composition, notably through work at the electronic studios in Cologne. Por lá foi influenciado pelo contato com técnicas de composição ocidentais mais experimentais, como os estúdios de música eletrônica. Sua ópera 'Le Grand Macabre', de 1977, é ambientada numa terra derivada das pinturas de Breughel, recorre a uma variedade de referências, de Monteverdi a Beethoven, e inicia-se com um prelúdio de buzina de motor. Escreveu bastante música para orquestra, como 'Apparitions' (1959), 'Atmosphères' (1961), 'Lontano (1967), 'Concerto de Câmara para 13 instrumentos', o 'Concerto para Violoncelo', entre muitas outras. Destaque também para sua produção de música de câmara e para piano. Soon afterwards I found this sealed Ligeti record in the bins at Academy. I hadn’t heard the music before, but I had a vague memory of Ligeti being described as a forerunner of spectralism. I decided to take a chance and buy it without listening. The gamble paid off. The whole record is magnificent, but a particular highlight for me is the 12 soloist version of his Ramifications piece. Played without a discernible rhythm, different groups of musicians tuned a quarter tone apart, attempt to retune each other. It’s safe to say that a lot has changed for both of us in the intervening years, but what hasn’t is the strength of our friendship and our shared love and desire to strive for detailed, intricate and expressively liberated music-making. Rehearsing this programme has been total food for the soul, and last night’s concert, to a packed out Octagon Chapel, was the perfect way to restart our duo-playing life. Bald ist es so weit! Die letzten Vorbereitungen für das nächste Musiksommer-Konzert «Fragmente» laufen! Nur drei Jahre nach seiner Gründung wurde das Moser String Quartet mit dem 1. Preis beim Internationalen Wettbewerb Gran Premi Musical Lauredià (Andorra) sowie dem 2. Preis bei der Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music Competition ausgezeichnet und erhielt kürzlich den Special Award «Ambassador Ensemble of the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition 2023» (Japan). Zudem trat das Ensemble an zahlreichen internationalen Festivals auf, darunter am Trame Sonore Chamber Music Festival, am MonteLeón International Chamber Music Festival und am Ernen Musikdorf Festival. Das in der Schweiz ansässige Ensemble fokussiert sich mit Enthusiasmus auf die Aufführung zeitgenössischer Stücke, insbesondere von Schweizer Komponist*innen. So wird das Ensemble am Mittwoch, 15.05. im Kapuzinerkloster Rapperswil neben bekannten Werken von Schubert und Ligeti auch vier Uraufführungen von Studierenden der Kompositionsklasse von Dieter Ammann erklingen lassen. «Fragmente» – zweites Musiksommer-Konzert! Am Mittwoch, 15.05. um 19:30 im Kapuzinerkloster Rapperswil Eintritt frei, Kollekte Warum bleibt ein Kunstwerk Fragment? Die Begründungen dafür sind vielfältig und können den persönlichen oder politischen Umständen sowie ästhetischen und sozialen Veränderungen geschuldet sein. Auf dem Programm des zweiten Musiksommer-Konzertes stehen Werke, die unvollendet geblieben sind, fragmentarische Kompositionsstrukturen aufweisen oder zur Thematik «Fragmente» geschrieben wurden. Ihr könnt Euch auf zwei Klassiker und vier Uraufführungen freuen, die vom jungen, aufstrebenden Moser String Quartet interpretiert werden! Franz Schubert, Quartett in c-Moll D 703: 1820 vollendete Schubert den ersten Satz seines Streichquartetts in c-Moll und komponierte die Anfangstakte des zweiten Satzes. Warum der sogenannte «Quartettsatz» keine Fortführung fand, ist nicht bekannt. György Ligeti, Streichquartett Nr. 1 «Métamorphoses nocturnes»: Ligeti schrieb sein erstes Streichquartett 1953-54 «für die Schublade», denn unter der Doktrin des «sozialistischen Realismus» im Ungarn der 1950er Jahre war die Aufführung seiner Werke verboten. Das hochvirtuose Quartett, das aus 17 Fragmenten besteht, konnte 1958 in Wien uraufgeführt werden und gehört heute zu den Klassikern des Streichquartett-Repertoires des 20. Jahrhunderts. Vier Studierende der Kompositionsklasse von @ammanndieter haben Werke erschaffen, die sich auf unterschiedlichste Weise mit der Thematik des Fragments auseinandersetzen.
