In a 1960 interview, the abstract painter Mark Tobey, after years of living in Paris, where he achieved acclaim from the otherwise relatively chauvinist French critical establishment, nevertheless demurred that he was “an American painter, whatever [that] means.” After securing her position as a major figure in American abstract painting, Joan Mitchell, who spent long periods in France before eventually moving there permanently in 1959, said she hated “to be called an exile or an expatriate”; she was, in the words of poet John Ashbery, an “apatriate”—stateless, more or less. The ambivalence expressed in these comments about what being an American artist actually signified in a post–World War II world, a world of ascending US power on the global stage and of a simultaneous cultural internationalism made increasingly possible by the accessibility of air travel and other forms of congress and communication, is just one of the many threads woven through “Americans in Paris: Artists Working in Postwar France, 1946–1962,” a show that inaugurates the new home of New York University’s Grey Art Museum. Inspiriert sowohl von der Großstadtstruktur Manhattans, als auch von fernöstlicher Kalligraphietechnik, weiteten sich Tobeys filigrane Strukturen auf den ganzen Bildraum aus, verbanden alle Teile des Bildes zu einem harmonischen Ganzen und schufen so etwas damals völlig Neues. Charles Seliger (1926-2009) was 18 years old when he drew this in 1944. In that year, Seliger exhibited a painting at Howard Putzel's 67 Gallery in NYC in a show that also included work by Jackson Pollock, Lyonel Feininger, Hans Hoffmann, and Mark Tobey. The New York Times review said, "With respect to a picture called "Wounded Space," there will be plenty of time and we needn't feel at all hurried, for I understand that Charles Seliger is an 18-year-old boy." “Ritmo de la tierra” (1961) de Mark Tobey (1890-1976) Es un pionero de la abstracción estadounidense. Se interesó por las culturas artísticas de los continentes ajenos y quiso vincularlas en sus pinturas. En 1918 se convirtió a la fe Baha’i, que defendía la unidad de todas las religiones y la fraternidad universal. En 1922 comenzó a interesarse por la caligrafía oriental. Desde 1925, Tobey viajó por todo el mundo, desde París, Oriente Próximo, Inglaterra, México o diversos lugares de Asia. Entre sus visitas, la estancia más significativa para su arte fue Kioto. La experiencia de un mes en monasterio de zen en este sitio de 1934 crearía su estilo determinante “white writing”, mediante la que aplicaba los trazos caligráficos a un fondo coloreado. He leído unos escritos en los que el arte de Tobey influyó a “dripping” de Jackson Pollock, pero actualmente se confirma que quien influyó a Pollock para crear “dripping” es Janet Sobel. (Judith S. Resurrected this piece today by hand-stitching the layers together with twine. When I first painted it I experimented different ways to hold the layers together.. many of which didn’t work out like I thought.. I finally had time to finish it today. The Andrea Ingenito Contemporary Art Gallery is delighted to announce the exhibition of the American artist Mark Tobey, entitled “Armonie Interiori”. The exhibition will be held from March 21st to May 11th, 2024, at our gallery in Milan , on Via Lodovico Settala 59. The exhibition is a result of collaboration with Mark Tobey's Hachmeister Archive and with some significant Italian and foreign private collections. In the main hall of the gallery, there will be 15 unique works strongly representative of the artist's oeuvre, including World of Stones from 1959, exhibited in one of Tobey's most important solo shows at the Musée d'Art Décoratif in Paris in 1961; in the second room, another 10 high-quality works will be displayed, available in a numbered edition. A selection of works that spans the subtlest and most symbolic nuances of Tobey's art. The artist has left an indelible mark on contemporary art: he is known to have been a pioneer of modern painting, particularly a precursor to American abstract expressionism that later inspired the art of Jackson Pollock.
