Becoming Mark Rothko - Day 4 In 1940, Markus Rothkowitz, aged 37, changed his name to Mark Rothko. His art also changed. As a response to the his own artistic crisis and to the real crisis caused by the Nazi and the World War II, Rothko attempted to invent a "contemporary myth". (He was already interested in mythology during his study at Yale.) Today's Untitled was painted between 1941 and 1942. The canvas is segmented in three sections with different colours. In “1934 joined Gershwin in Folly Island, South Carolina. Botkin and Gershwin worked simultaneously; Gershwin composing the opera, Porgy and Bess and Botkin painting scenes from the life of the American Negro in the South.” Signed on the front, lower left. Howard Sherman was born in Houston, Texas in 1970 and lives and works in Houston and New York. Since receiving his Masters of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from the University of North Texas in 2006, Howard Sherman has led a new generation of contemporary painters in the Texas art world. Sherman’s typically human-sized canvases bear traces of his background as a cartoonist, balancing the loud, raw power of his aggressive strokes of color with a playful sense of humor. His smaller works on paper show an intuitive handling of materials and, with the simplest of means, allow complex types or states we can recognize immediately in a fascinating way - they hit the nail on the head. After numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums in Texas and New York, he ventured across the Atlantic for his first European solo exhibition at GALERIE KREMERS in Berlin. “Howard Sherman’s work draws us in with the immediacy of gesture that is perfectly balanced with vibrant color. What keeps us engaged is his potent combination of contradictions. In a single work, drips, splatters, and passages of energetic brushwork exist alongside hard-edged forms, figuration, and an occasional insertion of text. This all-inclusive method calls into question the boundaries of abstraction, and how far they can be pushed to create a successful work— something Sherman has built a career on doing… Like Philip Guston, Sherman appreciates the honesty and directness of the cartoon aesthetic. Guston’s early ambition was to be a cartoonist. Il rencontre Gertrude Stein et Pablo Picasso après avoir été hospitalisé à Paris durant la seconde guerre mondiale. Le temps qu'il a passé en Pennsylvanie et dans le Maine a conduit Pace à créer des oeuvres représentant des scènes extérieures, telles que des homardiers ou des toiles figurant sa femme jardinant, ainsi que des intérieurs et des nus réalisés dans son atelier. These two paintings were created in the same year, 1957, by the American Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis (1923–1994) during the year that he first visited Japan. The former, a mural for the Sogetsu Kaikan auditorium simply titled “Tokyo Mural”, triggered the trip that would cement his love for the country. The latter, “Towards Disappearance”, created when he returned to Paris, adopts the Japanese treatment of negative space, which relates not only to emptiness but also to an interval that encompasses great unseen energy and life (chi).
