I caught the amazing student work at ArtNow 2024: In Transition, an award-winning annual juried Santa Clara County high school art exhibition and educational program, presented by New Museum Los Gatos! The work was all so accomplished and thoughtful! My absolute favorite piece was this embroidered sieve “Sunflower on a Sieve” by Natya Chandrasekar which won first place in sculpture! In this virtual talk, artist Liz Harvey will discuss her exhibition, the lost ones: iterations and murmurs, and her work that engages with stitching as a way to deal with the bittersweet, particularly around climate disruption during the Anthropocene– the time during which humans have had a substantial impact on our planet. She’ll share how disorientation and embroidery come together as strategies to "queer" our relationship to nature. Using dance and textiles, her work often makes use of what she calls time-traveling to engage with overlooked stories as well as to envision futures centering liberation. the lost ones invited participants to embroider critically endangered flowers and plants on a garment worn by a performer in multiple outdoor performances in order to help viewers navigate yearning and melancholy. Join us TONIGHT, 5-7 PM, for a reception celebrating Los Gatos Art Association's 75th anniversary and explore Greater Bay Area Open (GBAO), the juried fine-art competition and exhibition. Register using the link in bio. GBAO is a juried fine-art-only competition and exhibition presented by the Los Gatos Art Association (LGAA), designed to promote fine art and artists from the greater Bay Area. Starting in 2015 and held biannually, the GBAO is now in its fifth showing and is presented biennially. This exhibition forges an exciting and dynamic association between the LGAA and NUMU, host to this collaboration and will be on view at NUMU through March 9, 2024. Spanning twelve Bay Area counties, from Sonoma to Monterey, this juried event draws artists to compete for awards and recognition but also brings exposure to respected jurors, galleries, and art collectors from the region. In every moment of creativity, there is an option to explore one’s perspective and expression. For this exhibition, LGAA invites artists to push work past usual boundaries to embrace the movement between potentiality and actuality. All artists are encouraged to interpret the theme, “Potentiality / Actuality” in their own way. Pictured: Hana Lock, Dyad, Mixed/Other, 24"x20" "Dyad is an exploration of potentiality and actuality through life and death. New life has the capacity to grow and develop in a variety of ways, and the paths an organism may take is unique to the individual. However, despite the diverse possibilities an existence may have, the one potentiality that is universally actualized for every life form is death and decay." #museum #art #mixedmedia #exhibition #losgatos #bayarea #greaterbayarea #event #reception #numulg #newmuseumlosgatos #gbao #gbaoatnumu

I just dropped off my painting “Coming and Going” for the Bay Area wide juried exposition that the New Museum of Los Gatos hosts every other year. When I started painting this piece at the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor it was cloudy and I thought the painting mostly going to focus on the reflections. What's the creepiest thing in your collection? For NUMU, that would probably have to go to our large collection of dolls - like this one seen here. Most of the dolls were likely donated by Maud Martin, and many can be seen on display in our history gallery and newly opened Collections Lab! Not only do these dolls build the perfect atmosphere when you're the only one closing up the museum at night, but they are a great tool to reflect on the stories that they were used to tell. Dolls engage our imagination and reflect our humanity. We love being able to share these dolls with you! Plus, enjoy refreshments and mingling with other guests and staff members from Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST). Thursday, October 12, 5-8 PM, New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU), 106 E Main St, Free ($10 suggested donation) NUMU Members enjoy a complimentary drink ticket! Register using the link in bio. "The Hiking Club: A Vocabulary of Yearning," is solo show featuring artist Linda Simmel and guest curated by Marianne K. McGrath on view Oct 13-Feb 4. Through evocative drawings, etchings, and paintings, Linda Simmel explores personal and cultural connections between landscape, memory, and history and intertwines the story of being the daughter of an immigrant, with the sublime in nature. The works in the show are in part homage to landscape, trees, and the histories they’ve lived in, as well as Simmel’s immigrant father and the time in which he lived. For the artist, the work reveals the process of unraveling the burden of history that defines her, which ultimately presents a sensitive inquiry into intergenerational cultural identity, loss, and renewal. #numulg #newmuseumlosgatos #losgatos #art #museum #environment #memory #lindasimmel #bayarea #southbay #sanjose #reception #artisttalk #artist #event

I was thrilled to see Kiana Honarmand on the last day of her solo exhibition, On Edge, at NUMU! This Sunday, Oct 1, is the last day to see the stunning On Edge. Kiana Honarmand, On Edge (2017), Fiberboard, steel, light, shadow Drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of concealing critical commentary within Persian poetry and art, On Edge honors the unwavering spirit of Iranian women in their fight against oppression. In the elegant curves of Persian calligraphy, politically-charged writings are transformed into patterns. And while Persian script may evoke fear and unease in the West, these bold patterns seize the space while challenging preconceptions. Much like Iranian women who have defied the oppressive and unjust laws imposed upon them by their government, this work radiates resilience despite limitations. An inner light shines through constraints and boundaries, breaking free from the confines of the metaphorical cage, illuminating not only the immediate surroundings but also embracing anyone near it, inviting the viewer to become part of the experience. Announcing the theme for ArtNow 2024... In Transition! Taking time to reflect on the past, our personal and collective histories, challenges, and successes, grounds us as we look forward to the future. How does your past and present inform your future? What does it mean to evolve, to blossom, and to truly discover who you are and who you want to become? New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) invites Santa Clara County high school students to create an original work of art that reveals the complex journey of being In Transition. Consider the significance of this chapter of your youth – a stage of metamorphosis from childhood into adulthood. Explore the subtle but powerful shifts in your personal development within contemporary societal culture and the stories of your ancestors. Transition is temporal, emotional, constructive, empowering, and a fundamental part of life. “A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you're in and take advantage of it.” - Nikki Giovani, American poet, activist and educator This year’s theme was co-created with the ArtNow Teen Council, an exciting step forward in elevating the program to be widely accessible and relevant to teenagers living across Santa Clara County. Through this meaningful partnership with student artists, teens are not only the beneficiaries of ArtNow, but its architects. Submissions open in October. More details and an educational toolkit coming soon. This paper installation draws from stories of mental health – anxiety, depression, and the like – of friends, family, and strangers. Through an open social media survey, the artist collected over a hundred responses from people within this region and beyond. These people shared their stories and perspectives on their mental health, answering three questions: What do you wish people knew? What do you admire? How is your anxiety a “superpower” in your day to day? The artist then curated the responses and transferred them onto homemade paper, personalizing each piece with process painting. Pictured: Chelsea Stewart, What do you admire?/What do you wish people knew?/What do you admire? Chelsea Stewart, She Needs a System, 2023, Acrylic and paper on wood panel "The title of the piece was inspired by Foy Vance’s song “System” [...] I think of a System as a routine. I thrive off of routines and systems myself, and transitions don’t come easy to me. The title “She needs a system” came subconsciously to me listening to the song as it happened to come on during the making, and thinking a routine is needed in order to function. I think a lot of us thrive off of routine, and it's something we try not to stray too far from - whether it be a choice or ours or not with daily life." Check out the playlist Chelsea listened to while making her work for (Un)familiar on Spotify, link in bio. 🎶 "This piece, as well as the other small ones, were made in tandem during a time of rest from working on the large pieces for so long. With the smaller pieces, there has to be equally as much of an impact as the others, but with less surface area. This piece is a process collage made with multiple source materials, using the textures of the kenaf fibers and contextual elements from old self help coffee table books given by friends and family as gifts, resulting in this piece." #newmuseumlosgatos #numulg #museum #art #music #playlist #spotify #paper #painting #system

Hoo here can name all these birds? 🦉 We estimate that we have hundreds of wooden carved birds in our collection, and we've dubbed the group the Frink Carved Bird Collection, of which we've cataloged 44 items so far. This month, we bring you the partial mystery of The Golden Poppy pen cap. In the museum’s collection, there is a pen cap that is easily identified as such because it is inscribed with the manufacturing information for a pen and pencil company, the E. Faber Pencil Company. On this cap is the information for a Los Gatos business that specializes in candies, fountain services, and lunch called The Golden Poppy. The Golden Poppy used to be located at 32 West Main Street, which is right behind where Icing on the Cake is today. However, we were unable to find any information about this business in our research; despite having so much information, there are still questions! Who owned it, when was it in business, and for how long? If you remember visiting The Golden Poppy, and have any information or memories about it that you’d like to share, please let us know! #history #historymystery #mystery #losgatos #bayarea #southbay #sanjose #goldenpoppy #ca #california #newmuseumlosgatos #numulg

We are excited to announce that NUMU has been awarded the 2023 Superintendent's Award for Excellence in Museum Education for ArtNow! ArtNow is NUMU’s annual juried Santa Clara County high school art exhibition and educational program established in 2012. This award highlights the essential role ArtNow plays in our local arts education curriculum. We have been working hard on this program for over a decade and are excited to share this recognition with all of you! The Superintendent’s Award for Excellence in Museum Education competition recognizes the outstanding achievements in California museum programs that serve K-12 students and/or educators. The competition is a joint project of the sponsors, the California Association of Museums (CAM) and the California Department of Education (CDE). Since 2012, the competition has recognized 66 programs, presented by a diverse range of institutions that demonstrate the vibrant contributions museums make to California’s K-12 educational system. In 2023, CAM and the CDE recognize 6 outstanding programs that took place in 2022. The ArtNow exhibition and supporting programs offer opportunities for high school student artists, from Palo Alto to Gilroy, to gain real-world experience in participating in a juried museum exhibition. Each year, a new theme is chosen for the exhibition and students are asked to submit works based on that theme. $16,000 in scholarships and awards are given to select participating students. Accepted students have the opportunity to win awards in 8 artistic categories as well as an overall Best in Show prize and a People’s Choice Award. Thank you to everyone who has supported this program, from teachers to sponsors. We couldn't have done it without you. 💚 #newmuseumlosgatos #numulg #museum #art #education #arteducation #superintendentsaward #cam #californiaassociationofmuseums #cde #californiadepartmentofeducation #artnow #artnowatnumu

Over the past month, our registrar has been steadily working on cataloging a 2016 donation of items relating to Billy Jones. The collection was donated to the museum by his daughter and granddaughter, Geraldine Peters and Priscilla Peters respectively, and includes a wide variety of items relating to both the Jones family and the Wildcat Railroad. William “Billy” Jones was born and raised in Ben Lomond, and began working in the railroad sector when he was just 13 years old. He ended his career with Southern Pacific Railroad in 1950, where he had been running trains along the coast for many years. While Billy was working, he discovered a one-third scale locomotive in a scrap yard. He rescued the locomotive and moved it to his property in Los Gatos where he restored it to its original glory. He opened the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad in 1943, where children and their families could ride the train for free. After Billy’s death, a non-profit corporation was formed to save the Wildcat Railroad, and the group raised funds to move the train, build a station and engine house, and lay tracks in its current location in Oak Meadow and Vasona parks. One of the Wildcat Railroad’s most famous admirers was Walt Disney, who was inspired by Billy’s operation, and even invited him to help design the Disneyland Railroad! You can check out the cataloged items from this important donation of local history cataloged so far by searching for “Billy Jones” in our online database on CatalogIt, link in bio. #newmuseumlosgatos #numulg #losgatos #history #museum #train #billyjoneswildcatrailroad #losgatos #bayarea #vasona #oakmeadow #disney #disneyland #benlomond #local #localhistory
