Coincidentally, on the day I went to see the magnificent expressionist drama Machinal at the Old Vic, I also visited the Expressionists exhibition at Tate Modern. It centred on the early twentieth century Blue Rider group that included Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter and Marianne Werefkin. Incidentally, given the feminist standpoint of Machinal, it’s interesting that Blue Rider included and respected female artists, which wasn’t the case with Machinal author Sophie Treadwell working in theatre. The range of work by the expressionist artists, from the clearly representational to virtually abstract, has in common an attempt to use shape and colour to convey the feeling of a person or place, rather than the more visually accurate observations made by their predecessors, such as the Impressionists. There are times when you enter a room, it feels like the paint has been thrown in your face. And it’s a similar feeling when you are hit by Machinal’s mustard coloured, claustrophobic set, stark lighting, industrial sound, and the mechanical dialogue and movement that convey the oppression of the main character Helen, played by Rosie Sheehy. I’m honoured to have had my book reviewed by Michael Shmith, writer and editor but more importantly, son of the late prominent Melbourne photographer Athol Shmith in The Australian Book Review. It's been a two-show week, both based on real people. 'Machinal' at @oldvictheatre is a play written in the 1920s by Sophie Treadwell based on notorious murderer Ruth Snyder. It's a striking & physical production, and a great example of how an ensemble can work together to tell a story. 'Three Queens' at baronscourtw14 is a behind the scenes look at the power struggle between Queen Mary & Lady Jane Grey, as well as a young Elizabeth. It's an interesting period of history that is seeped in intrigue & the story is nicely told by the writer Rosamund Gravelle. The @oldvictheatre poster says it all really. This piece has everything. Office boredom, kitchen sink tedium, domestic with no hope of bliss. A passionate but doomed love affair, murder most horrid, courtroom drama and despite knowing the true story behind it, it still managed to reach a shocking and grotesque ending for me. I sympathised wholly with the main protagonist. The jack hammer moment alone (you need to see this) would have sent me over the edge and that husband would leave anyone woman homicidal. "The Skin of our Teeth" is merely a restatement of platitudes. Wilder reminds us of the human essentials, of things, which, though they change, yet remain the same things. He sees that, despite human arrogance, life is small under the stars, but that, conversely, it is made divine by the vision and wisdom of artist and philosopher. In the play, Aristotle and Spinoza are personified by stage hands because their thought has permeated human existence and has become as much part of the living universe as the stars rotating through eternity. At the end of the play, Sabina comes to the footlights and repeats the speech with which she began it: "The whole world's at sixes and sevens and why the house hasn't fallen about our ears long ago is a miracle to me... This is where you came in. We have to go on for ages and ages yet...." The recurring adventures of "Life with Father" continue. The non-stop vaudeville starts all over again. Wilder gave us The Skin of Our Teeth, which Vivien Leigh considered her favorite modern play, and in which she played the role of Sabina in four productions, 1945 & 1946 in London, 1948 in Australia and New Zealand and again on television in 1959. The two were friends, and Wilder recounts in his journal a conversation with Vivien in 1951 regarding the book Anna Karenina: "I now see that I have all my life been an idiot about Anna Karenina-which came to such a bouquet of ineptitude in my conversation with Vivien Leigh about it: I have never had the faintest glimmer about that novel and now it is all to be reread." The Constituent gets to @oldvictheatre from the 13th June. This volatile new play stars BAFTA Award winner Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland, Line of Duty) as a hard-working opposition backbencher whose ideals of public office are tested by the demands of a man in crisis, played by Tony, BAFTA and Emmy Award winner James Corden (One Man, Two Guvnors, The History Boys). Yesterday I took myself off for the day to see my beautiful friend @rsheesh give her penultimate performance as Puck in Stratford ✨ Hands down the best Puck I ever did see 😭🧚🏻♀️💚 There were some truly magical moments in this show and to hear a theatre choc full of people, ringing with laughter on a Saturday afternoon was a tonic for the soul 💚 Rosie works like no other actress I’ve seen .. she gives her heart & soul, body & mind on every stage .. compelling to watch in every role she plays & with a fearlessness & grace I absolutely love ✨ Frankly, her range is ridiculous 💚 I knew she could dance like a dream but yesterday I heard her sing for the first time .. just gorgeous ✨ Someone asked me afterwards if I was an actress too, and I replied No, not any more, I just do voice work now.. and then this morning I thought, why did I say that ? Is it because I don’t know if I would have what it takes to get up on a stage any more ? Who knows .. What does it mean to be an actress these days ? In an increasingly cutthroat industry where ego driven narcissism & performative overacting reigns & many young actresses seem to feel the need to get Botoxed to the hilt so they can post endless pictures of their pout on Insta, every now and then someone special comes along who cuts through all that crap with a flick of her faerie fingers, a lick of the lips & carries you into another world for a few hours .. Makes all that incredibly hard work that no one sees look so effortless & creates the sheer magic that theatre should be all about .. She restores my faith in what it means to be an actress every time I go to watch her and I would suggest you do the same .. You can find her next playing the Young Woman in Machinal at the Old Vic .. Show @liveaidmusical Theatre @oldvictheatre Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So pleased to have finally seen Just For One Day, it’s one I’ve been excited for. A great show with a talented cast and wonderful arrangements of classic songs. Excited to hear the cast album (announced just a couple of days ago) and to hear more about its future life! The good - The music, it’s just great. - The cast. All of them, but a few stand outs for me were @jofosterrr (the coat-choreo, I mean what in the Joseph and the technicolour drag race - OUTSTANDING!) @julie_atherton (had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand! Hilarious) @joelmontague10 and #craigeels (great chemistry between these two) @misssteers what a voice! - A well written book that (in my opinion) really captured Bob Geldof, made me laugh and brought tears to my eyes. The ‘could be better’ - Impossible to capture a rock concert feeling when you’re sat down being quiet in a theatre. I actually think this could really work as a more immersive experience (think Guys and Dolls-esque) - Sound. When singing through the handheld mics - often a lot of diction was lost.
