Ever wondered what would happen if Earth suddenly lost its oxygen for just 5 seconds? Well, it will change in some pretty ways. First off, you won't feel it right away because we can hold our breath longer than 5 seconds. But something dramatic would happen. The sky would turn pitch black because oxygen helps scatter sunlight, making it blue. Concrete structures, like buildings and dams, would crumble instantly because they rely on oxygen in their materials. The drop in air pressure would make your inner eardrums pop, and that would hurt. Surprisingly, electric cars would still work because they don't need oxygen for combustion. Now, here's the real shocker: Earth's crust, the outer layer we live on, contains 45% oxygen. Tomorrow at around 8am Pacific time/ 11 am Eastern an annular eclipse will begin, peak about an hour and fifteen minutes later, and end after a total of just under three hours. An annular eclipse means the Moon passes in front of the Sun, but due to distance, it will appear smaller than the Sun, and a ring of brightness will be visible. The path of full annularity will pass from roughly southern Oregon to southern Texas, and points beyond will see a partial eclipse. In a way, this will be a dress rehearsal for the total eclipse in April 2024. This will be the last total eclipse to pass over U.S. Lower 48 until 2045. So no pressure or anything. The shuttle program was a complicated piece of the Space Age. It's regularly called one of, if not the most, complex machines ever built. Astronauts flying in the shuttle were involved in many impressive feats, such as fixing the Hubble Space Telescope, closely studying the Earth, docking with the Russian Mir space station, and assembling the International Space Station. The shuttle also turned out to be much more dangerous to operate than first realized, with 14 astronauts on two missions losing their lives during disintegrations--once during launch, the other time during descent. Despite the risks, shuttle flights came to feel fairly routine and many people stopped paying more than cursory attention to much of what was happening above the planet. But taken as a whole, the shuttle program was a fascinating saga in space history. This NASA photo depicts the shuttle Endeavor on a mission in 2010. After retirement, this orbiter, which flew in space 25 times, was moved to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Recently, the center began the roughly six-month process to display the orbiter vertically, in launch configuration, along with a red external tank and two solid rocket boosters.
It's called a space WALK, not a space float or a space sesh. And extra-vehicular activity could be paraphrased as outside endeavors. Basically, human space exploration has plenty in common with adventure travel. That was part of the approach I took with my new book Space Age Adventures: Over 100 Terrestrial Sites and Out of This World Stories. The book is half a guide to space sites and half a series of adventurous true stories that span the entire space age. That way, you can learn the dramatic stories behind the missions and artifacts before putting an Earthly spin on the concept of space travel by visiting places like air & space museums, science centers, observatories, and astronaut training areas. Happy Memorial Day! I came across this amazing image, taken by a NASA photographer at the launch of Apollo 11 in 1969, during research for my new book. Memorial Day honors military personnel who died while serving their country. The Apollo Program lost several astronauts with military backgrounds, including the three astronauts--Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee--who died in the Apollo 1 launchpad fire. When astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin launched aboard the Saturn V rocket, pictured here, some people believed the odds of them successfully landing on the Moon was about 50/50. President Nixon even had a speech prepared to honor their sacrifice should they become stranded on the lunar surface or die during the mission. But the first two people to step foot on the Moon made it safely back to Earth, capping off one of the greatest human adventure stories of all time. Others have not been so lucky, with nearly 200 deaths having resulted from space-related endeavors around the world--during space missions, atmospheric testing, or ground incidents. Yet those most involved in space efforts believe the risks are worth the rewards that come with space exploration, including scientific discoveries, technological improvements, and the sheer exhilaration of going on an adventure amid the stars.

Marine litter is becoming a real problem along our coastlines. Most of the litter we find on our coasts are of single-use plastics. According to Clean Coasts, an organisation that is actively cleaning the Irish coasts, 50% of marine litter is single-use Plastic. Plastic that takes 5 minutes to create for us to use for another 5 minutes. But most single-use Plastic takes up to 500 years to break down. Providing destruction all the way to decomposition. One year has passed, and I now recycle disposable containers or use reusable containers to carry freshly produced food from local markets. I now insist on having my takeaway coffee in my own mug, or I alternatively choose to sit down to have my coffee. I also carry a stainless-steel water bottle wherever I go. I'm never without mine. I say no to sodas, sparkling water and juices in bottles. At home, we got creative with our solution and bought a soda stream instead. And once we moved away from plastics, we started moving away from chemicals too. I stopped buying laundry, fabric softeners and other household cleaning agents and replaced them with biodegradable cleaning products that I make myself. Every year, an estimated 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean joining another 150 million tons of Plastic already there. It is staggering that studies are telling us that we consume up to 5 grams of microplastics per week. The equivalent size of a credit card. And what's even more staggering is that water treatment plants are not able to filter all of the microplastics that are going into the sea contributing to climate change and the potential mass extinction of marine life.
