Famous tennis coach "King Richard" Williams has been trying to divorce his ex-wife Lakeisha ever since he found out she allegedly faked his signature on the title deeds to take over his four-bedroom mansion in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Court documents state that the house had been in the Williams family since 1995. This led Lakeisha to borrow $279k from a "hard lender" named David Simon, with whom she allegedly spent the money on a failed trucking business, as well as fast food and other expenses. Simon has been pursuing her in court to recover the funds, and the debt has escalated to $620k, including legal fees and interest. It appears likely that she may have to sell the $1.4M-valued home to repay Simon. However, in June last year, Lakeisha claimed that Richard was pressured by a third party, leading her to file a motion to dismiss the divorce case. OTD - April 30, 1912 - animator Emery Hawkins was born. Hawkins started his career as an inker at Walter Lantz's studio in the early 1930s, and in 1932 joined Charles Mintz's studio, where he animated on the "Scrappy" and "Color Rhapsody" series. In 1937, he was hired at MGM's then-new cartoon studio on the "Captain and the Kids" series, but he left after a year due to creative differences with the director. Hawkins then joined Walt Disney's studio as an animator on the Donald Duck shorts, including "The Autograph Hound" (1939), "Donald's Vacation" (1940) and "Timber" (1941), but left during the 1941 studio strike. He was then hired by Frank Tashlin at Screen Gems, where he did what he considered his best work, animating on shorts such as "Woodman, Spare That Tree" (1942). In 1942, Hawkins returned to Lantz, where he notably redesigned Woody Woodpecker with Art Heineman. He did wacky animation on shorts such as "Abou Ben Boogie", "The Barber of Seville" (both 1940) and "Woody Dines Out" (1945), before leaving the studio in 1945. After a brief stint at Disney again, Hawkins joined Warner Bros in 1946, where he did his zaniest animation on shorts including "Two Gophers From Texas" (1946), "A Ham in a Role" (1949) and "Hillbilly Hare" (1950). Seeking variety, he left to New York in 1950 to work on TV commercials. He later worked on the Hubleys' Oscar-nominated "The Adventures of an *" and -winning "A Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Double Feature" (1965), Bill Melendez's "Snoopy, Come Home" (1972) and Richard Williams' "Raggedy Ann and Andy" (1977), on which he animated the highly complex Greedy. Hawkins then animated on Jack Zander's "Gnomes" (1980) and William's never-released "The Thief and the Cobbler", but began to develop Alzheimer's disease and had to retire. He died in 1989. Hawkins was famous for his loose, cartoony animating style, and his innovations and contributions to several major American cartoon studios over multiple decades. On the sidelines, I’ve purchased Richard Williams The Animator’s Survival Kit. Williams is known for being the director of animation for ‘Who Framed Rodger Rabbit” and is overall an excellent animator. I’m excited for what this book has in store, it has hundreds of drawings and many exercises to practice the fundamentals of animation. I’ve animated before but always tried to avoid it by any means…👀Anyway this book intrigued me, it goes into depth of methods, principals, and formulas of understanding fluid animation! SO this may be basic but quite important, this exercise is a pendulum which shows ease in and ease out of extreme positions. It also shows the use of arcs. Again this is only a start yet a key principal that is useful for upcoming animation exercises. He worked tirelessly for others, especially those in his beloved Mordialloc community. After his passing in 2020, a few of his close mates got together to create a Scholarship Fund in his memory. OTD - April 24, 1909 - animator Irven "Irv" Spence was born. Spence began his career in 1931 at Charles Mintz's studio and later animated on Ub Iwerks' "Flip the Frog"series. In 1936, he joined Leon Schlesinger's studio in Tex Avery’s unit, animating on a few Merrie Melodies including "A Sunbonnet Blue" (1937). In 1938, Spence joined MGM's then-new cartoon studio, animating on the "Captain and the Kids" series (1938-39). He later worked for Avery again on his first four MGM cartoons : "The Early Bird Dood It!", "Blitz Wolf" (both 1942), "Dumb-Hounded" and "Red Hot Riding Hood" (both 1943). However, he quickly moved to the Tom and Jerry unit helmed by Joe Barbera and Spence's former schoolmate Bill Hanna. Starting on "The Yankee Doodle Mouse" (1943), Spence did his most famous work on the series, animating the zaniest scenes in entries including "The Zoot Cat" (1944), "The Mouse Comes To Dinner" (1945), "Mouse Cleaning" (1948) and the Oscar-winners "The Cat Concerto" (1947) and "The Two Mouseketeers" (1952) to name a few. He also directed two live-action shorts, "Rats in Spats" (1941) and "Rugged Rangers" (1942) at the studio. (1970), Ralph Bakshi on features such as "Coonskin" (1975) and "The Lord of the Rings" (1978), and Richard Williams on "Raggedy Ann and Andy : A Musical Adventure" (1977). His last credit was on "Tom and Jerry : The Movie" (1993). He died in 1995 of a heart attack. Spence was famous for his cartoony, inventive animation style, his solid, expressive draftsmanship, and his key work on the Tom and Jerry series. He received the Winsor McCay Award in 1986.

OTD - April 18, 1917 - animator Warren Batchelder was born. Batchelder joined Leon Schlesinger's studio in 1936 and around 1945 became an assistant animator to Virgil Ross. Batchelder moved on to becoming a full-fledged animator in Robert McKimson’s unit in the late 1950s, although he did not receive screen credit until “Feather Bluster” (1958). He animated on many of the studio's final cartoons, including "The Mouse That Jack Built" (1958), "Cat's Paw" (1959), "Daffy's Inn Trouble" (1961) and "Aqua Duck" (1962), often on acting scenes. When WB shut down its cartoon studio in 1963, Batchelder moved on to DePatie-Freleng Enterprises and became one of the its top animators, working on series including "The Pink Panther" and "The Ant and the Aardvark". He also freelanced for other studios, animating on Bill Melendez's "Peanuts" specials "It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown" (1976) and "Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown" (1977), and on Richard Williams' "Raggedy Ann and Andy : A Musical Adventure" (1977). When Depatie-Freleng was acquired by Marvel Productions in 1981, Batchelder continued to work for Friz Freleng in his new WB unit, including on "The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie" (1981) and "Daffy Duck's Fantastic Island" (1983); and for David DePatie on Marvel TV shows including "Dungeons and Dragons" (1984-85) and "Defenders of the Earth" (1986). Batchelder retired in 2002, and died five years later. Batchelder was significant for his expertly use of overlap and squash and stretch, and his contributions to WB and DePatie-Freleng animation. He received the Animation Guild Award in 1987.

A good rule of thumb would seem to be always to pick up records by Rahsaan Roland Kirk when you see them. This wasn’t on my radar at all but there it was @lorenzosrecordswanted and it didn’t take much thought to grab it. Had no idea that Kirk played harmonica until I heard this and really that probably shouldn’t surprise me at all…maybe it’s surprising he isn’t playing two other instruments at the same time. As the title suggests this is largely music that isn’t his own so there’s a bit of Bird, a track by Frank Foster and originals by Hilton Ruiz, Trudy Pitts and Mattathias Pearson who are all in this group. Roy Haynes is also here which is always a good thing, their duet on ‘Simone’ is one of my favourite things on the album. There’s also a call up for the massively underrated trumpet man Richard Williams. In the films that came before, the camera would be mostly still as the actors interacted with the cartoon characters. For this noir-comedy, the camera would be in constant motion in many shots. Zemeckis sought out Richard Williams, a London-based animation director who had won an Oscar and many other awards for his groundbreaking animated commercial work. When asking about the task, Williams just assured Zemeckis to move the camera however he wanted and they would take care of the rest. The painting of the owl reminds me of this album by my all-time favourite band Kansas. The image used on the front cover of 'Masque' (1975) is called 'Water' (1566) and part of 'The Four Elements' series by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. This album also happens to contain their best song ever: Mysteries And Mayhem & The Pinnacle (two seperate cuts on the LP, but originally penned as one mighty magnus opus by the Maestro (Kerry Livgren that is). It's about a vision he had.
