Double especially since PeasantDad is a high school math teacher . PeasantMom baked me half a dozen dog friendly pumpkin pies!! She used our favorite cookie recipe for the pie crust and added canned pumpkin once cooked and popped in the fridge. No matter the size of the circle, this ratio is always the same. The awareness of the existence of this constant ratio goes back to 2,000 BC to the Babylonians and Egyptians! Archimedes improved on their rough numerical approximations and by the early 1900s the first 500 digits of Pi were known! And now thanks to computers we know the first 6 billion digits!! . Many women suffered from these prior to the 19th century and in doing so became social outcasts. Between the years 1845-1849, Sims experimented on seven enslaved black women who suffered from VVF. Sketch of Dr. Sims [4] Sims never used anesthesia nor provided any type of pain relief as he believed that black women didn’t experience pain like white women did. The first enslaved women operated on was Lucy. For the hour she was operated on Sims noted that her agony was extreme. The operation made Lucy extremely sick due to blood-poisoning. He noted that he believed she would die and that it took her 3 months to recover entirely. ♡︎ Hi Everyone ♡︎ ♡︎ It’s been a while since I posted and I appreciate everyone that reached out earlier this month ♡︎ ♡︎ On November 30th I showed up to my job and 3 hrs later - I was laid off ♡︎ ♡︎ It’s been super hard coming to terms with it and knowing that it wasn’t due to my performance. But rather the company not coming close to their 2023 revenue projections. Across the company hundreds of employees were laid off at the beginning of December - right before the holidays ♡︎ ♡︎ As the sole income for my family that has left us with nothing. We can no longer afford to live in Madison, since WI unemployment is a joke (a month won’t even cover our rent). Thankfully our families have additional room for us for the meantime ♡︎ ♡︎ I’ve applied to so many jobs and have yet to hear back - due to the holidays everyone is on vacation. So it doesn’t look like I’ll hear from anyone until at minimum the beginning of January ♡︎ ♡︎ We have to continue to pay our full rent until we can find someone to take it over - so if anyone knows of someone looking for a really nice apartment, DM me! It has great features ♡︎ ♡︎ SciPaws was a struggle this year to begin with due to my never ending health problems - but now it’s not even doable. I hope I can find a job and get my family back on our feet and hopefully be able to bring SciPaws back to life. Until then, I’ll be closed for the foreseeable future ♡︎ ♡︎ Its been amazing being able to meet so many people, from so many countries and with different backgrounds. Its atomic weight is 174.967amu and its name stems from ‘Lutetia’, which is an the ancient name for Paris, France ⚛︎ ⚛︎ Though 3 scientist discovered lutetium separately, the credit goes to Geogres Urbain in 1907. He was able to isolate the element from Ytterbium. Though it has little use outside of research there are two here: catalyst for breaking petroleum products at oil refineries. And radioimmunotherapy for cancer treatment ⚛︎ ⚛︎ It’s toxicity levels are low, very dense and no known biological benefits. However, some think it’s able to boost your metabolism, but not proven. Arsenic changes from a solid state to a gaseous state, skipping the liquid state altogether in normal atmospheric pressure ✼ ✼ It’s found in 2 types of environments: organic (bonded with carbon) and inorganic (not bonded with carbon). The latter being the most abundant, but also associated with more adverse events ✼ ✼ Arsenic (in it’s inorganic form) can be found in soil (thus in crops) and well-water. Almost 20% of wells in NH have above the EPA standard of arsenic. A handful of other states have them too. Water contamination is the major cause of arsenic toxicity in humans ✼ ✼ Arsenic can be found in lots of common foods; seafood, rice, poultry, vegetables, fruit and even beer and wine! However, organic arsenic that’s found in foods, such as seafood, aren’t known to be toxic to humans ✼ ✼ Inorganic arsenic notably inactivates enzymes necessary for DNA replication and repair (critical process to ensure accurate coding) and energy pathways, like ATP synthesis in the Mitochondria ✼ ✼ WHO has recognized that at least 140 million people have been consuming arsenic contaminated water. So, I’m going to teach you about the name of each product you see in the photo ⇞ ⇞︎ Wolframite ⇞ Scientifically, wolframite isn’t an individual mineral species but rather it’s recognized as a mineral series. Huebnerite and Ferberite are both minerals in the wolframite series. Wolframite got its named for its tungsten content, since “wolfram” means tungsten in German. Its composition is manganese iron tungstate and its coloration is hues of dark red, dark gray and black. Most often found in long prismatic crystals that are striated lengthwise. But there’s other formations like columnar groups and flattened tabular crystals. It’s a highly desirable mineral due to its uncommon occurrence. ✧ Stem Cells Their Controversy ✧ ✧ What are they: They’re undifferentiated, or partially differentiated (depends) cells, meaning they have the potential to become any cell because they’re not specialized yet. Specialized here means they don’t have a specific function yet, such as being a blood cell ✧ ✧ Types: There are 3 types (4 dependent). Somatic, or adult, stem cells, embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Somatic stem cells are found in young and adult animals and humans and regenerate damaged tissues. They’re able to regenerate the organ they originated from ✧ ✧ iPS Cells: These are lab created tissue specific cells that mimic embryonic cells, but are derived from adult tissues. What makes them special is that they can be made from the patients’ cells for an exact tissue match, can proliferate indefinitely and can give rise to every cell type in the body ✧ ✧ ESCs: These are the controversial guys! They’re derived from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, which are embryos that are around 5 day fertilization (~100 cells). In cultivating them you destroy the blastocysts. Labs typically acquire these embryos from IVF clinics, where most of these embryos will be discarded anyways. Pro-lifers claim that an embryo, no matter their lack of knowledge of what’s an embryo , is still a human life. Therefore, you’re committing murder ✧ ✧ ESC Utilization: The uses for these cells is vast. There’s research into organ transplant, some organs cannot regenerate such as the heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. It's #ChikosCoffeeMonday and the fifth week of #ChikosCaffeinatedClassroom. During this series, @chasingchiko is featuring coffee and a “Guest Lecturer.” I decided to talk about therapeutic design. Biologics are protein therapeutics. These can look like antibodies or be more of a Frankenstein format. There are many considerations when designing these molecules. Today, I am going to briefly highlight a few of these: 🎯Is this a reasonable strategy? Choosing a therapeutic is a feat. Many hours go into planning and testing theories on if a specific target will give a desired outcome. Sometimes this testing occurs before design of the biologic even begins. 🧪Is the biologic stable? Your body has an immune system to keep you safe and many other physiological processes happening all the time. These factors need to be considered to ensure that they will not affect how the biologic is designed to work. This also includes the body’s ability to dispose of the biologic. If the therapeutic cannot survive long enough in the body to perform its function, then there need to be steps taken to prevent this. 💊Is the biologic manufacturable? This aspect has two parts. The simplest aspect addresses the quantity. The biologic needs to be able to be easily made in high quantities. However, this is also related to the process of making it and ensuring it is pure. The process of purifying a biologic can take multiple steps to guarantee the molecule will perform properly. These processes need to be scalable to a manufacturing level which encounters challenges similar, but also different to the research and development level. Plus, many more! A lot of thought goes into making therapeutics for complicated uses. It is hard to predict everything, but that is why there are teams of scientists working to find these solutions! PD in comments

Once again, black women are put on the back burner ☠︎ ☠︎ On 20May2022, Louisiana Senator - Bill Cassidy, said the following, “About a 3rd of our population is African American; African Americans have a higher incidence of maternal mortality. So, if you correct our population for race, we’re not as much of an outlier as it’d otherwise appear” ☠︎ ☠︎ He goes on, “I say that not to minimize the issue, but to focus the issue as to where it would be. For whatever reason, people of color have higher incidence of maternal mortality” ☠︎ ☠︎ First, African American women make up about 13% of the women population in the United States as of population counts reported in 2020. Second, I am a part of this population. I have a valid birth certificate, but clearly that’s not enough. Neither is my SSN I assume then too ☠︎ ☠︎ Serena Williams, international tennis star who will forever break barriers, experienced a near death experience after giving birth in 2017 to Olympia. She required 4 surgeries and was so close to dying. After giving birth she reported excruciating pain that the hospital staff just told her was normal and weren’t overly concerned ☠︎ ☠︎ Black women are more than 3x more likely to die during their pregnancy, while giving birth and postpartum than white women within the United States. Serena had a known history of blood clots, suffering from pulmonary embolism in 2011, yet she was still disregarded by healthcare providers as overreacting ☠︎ ☠︎ With the looming overturn of Roe vs Wade. Red states already ultimately banning abortions. Contraceptions on the line. Sex education on the line. Unwanted pregnancies are going to spike and it’ll affect minorities heavily. The innate immune system is your first line of defense against any threats to your body ⌬︎ ⌬︎ They’re the ones that engage in battle first with an infection or at the site of a cut, for instance. They’re essentially the football “coach”. Whereas, the adaptive is your star quarterback ⌬︎ ⌬︎ But today I just wanna give a special shoutout to the innate immune system. So lemme introduce you to a couple of the key players ⌬︎ ⌬︎ CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER ⌬︎ ⌬ Complement System (grenades): A group of proteins present in high concentrations in your blood and tissues. They’re always primed and if a cell isn’t “protected” it will be bombed. They’re multifunctional in that they can destroy, “tag” intruders for other immune cells to later destroy, alert other cells that there’s an attack, thus activating them. And they do all of this at extreme speeds ⌬︎ ⌬︎ Macrophages (The sentinels): Found all throughout your body, these cells “keep watch” while also serving as a “garbage collector”. They “taste” their environment and keep the body free of debris. When they munch on something a bit ✨spicyer✨ they’re activated and assist in activating your adaptive immune system ⌬︎ ⌬︎ Neutrophils (the foot soldiers): About 20 billion of these soldiers are circulating throughout our veins and arteries. Their job is simply to “aim and fire” once they’re called upon. They produce many cytokines (basically your body’s 5G plan) and are the only cells licensed to unleash chemical warfare on cells and connective tissues (creating a “toxic soup”) when called upon ⌬︎ ⌬︎ There are so many other players in your immune system such as: natural killer cells, dendritic cells, B-cells and T-cells. the intricacies of your innate and adaptive immune cells need to be tightly regulated so they don’t wage war against your own cells. One major topic that seems to either be demonised or fully forgotten is: ✨Management✨ Im not perfect, I’ll make mistakes. Not only that but I can’t fully control others and the environment. Of course I’m going to learn and change from each encounter with a trigger or a poor experience when it comes to socialisation, however, in real life, I’m a person. I’m not perfect. I need management. I need guidance when it comes to management. When I was very new to having Kolo (my first dog) I was told by many trainers and the internet, that management is for those that don’t put in the time to train. Management is for those that want to punish their dog unnecessarily. Management means you have failed and you should just ignore what’s happening and fix it next time. This is really really discouraging. Learning management techniques when unexpected things that can’t be controlled happen was the biggest confidence booster! My mood was better, I panicked less which meant Kolo panicked less, and life with Kolo got easier and happier for us both. Management doesn’t mean we stop training, it just means that while we are training and proofing behaviours and changing his emotional state to certain things, we have a way to manage our mistakes as well as unexpected events. ☣︎ I miss bench science so much ☣︎ ☣︎ I miss trouble shooting my experiments and finding an optimized solution to me problems. I miss the euphoric feeling of discovery and nailing that new technique you just learned! ☣︎ ☣︎ I miss presenting my research. I loved presenting at conferences. By the end I didn’t appreciate them since I was beyond burned out. But now that I’ve had a break, I’d really want to go back to a conference. Also, conference swag is top tier! ☣︎ ☣︎ I don’t miss the burnout. I don’t miss doing a variation of the same experiment 100s of times and still not get it right. Then have to explain to your PI why you wasted so many materials and still have no conclusive data. I don’t miss the unrealistic expectations of working 60+ hours/week. Working weekends. Working late nights. Early morning. Skipping classes to work. I don’t miss classes. ☣︎ ☣︎ I may go back to research. Not sure - still need more space from it to truly appreciate it. But academia research may not be for me. So your entire bucket is 100 years max and you can’t live past 100yrs. The sand bucket is a calculator of how long your life span will be ☠︎ ☠︎ If you’re beefing with someone and you knock their bucket over and ALL the sand spills out and they’re 10 years old. ⚒︎ We. Are. Not. A. Trend! And we are not just a month! I’m sharing this again because my message is imperative ⚒︎ ⚒︎ We’re human beings looking for equality and equity in this country. Simple as that. Basic human rights ⚒︎ ⚒︎ My fiancé asked me once why I’m not as fearful of minority cops. I told him straight, “If they’re going to shoot me, it likely won’t be because of my skin color at least .” ⚒︎ ⚒︎ I’m sick of being afraid. I’m sick of tensing up whenever I see a police officer. I get a bit nauseated and my blood pressure is probably saying I have severe hypertension. I don’t want to feel safer because my white fiancé is by my side ⚒︎ ⚒︎ I don’t want to need a protector ⚒︎ ⚒︎ We’re just as smart. Just as creative. Just as talented. And it’s clear the white community agrees with the amount of appropriation that occurs ⚒︎ ⚒︎ No one bats an eye at compensating a white content creator. Yet when a black creator asks for compensation, we’re suddenly seen as greedy and out of place. ⚒︎ ⚒︎ Call out the hypocrisy!! That’s what you can do as a non-black individual ⚒︎ ⚒︎ Protect black women!! I constantly feel used and dismissed. Which I guess is fine, but don’t then put words in my mouth. Don’t steal my content. Don’t pretend to know who I am if you haven’t taken the time to really learn ⚒︎ ⚒︎ Just treat us with the same respect that you treat your own. Wind. Nature’s biggest fan. This weekend we did Subi’s longest, hilliest hike. 7 miles with over 1500 ft elevation gain. She was such a champ! What did you learn this Black History Month? My human read about some significant black chemists that were super impactful in their fields as well as to diversity in STEM in general. One of her favorites was Marie Maynard Daly who was the first black woman to earn a PhD in Chemistry, which she did in 1947. It was cool to read about her awesome work! Mom here. Unless you live in a hole, you should be aware that this is Black History Month. Black History should be every day, not just one month a year. It should be a regular part of our schools’ curriculum but unfortunately, textbooks over the years have been “whitewashed” and left out a critical part of our nation’s heritage - the contributions of POC - People of Color. Corelle from @scipaws posted a challenge of sorts today. For us who are allies, to put something on our profile, not just share others’ posts in our stories. I accept the challenge. I am not proud of my country and how we have treated others who are non-white. BLACK LIVES MATTER. This does not mean other lives matter less. That is not what it’s about. It’s about hundreds of years of oppression and treating Black people as somehow “less.” It’s about raising up Black people to where they should be - equal with everyone else. Given the same opportunities, not be discriminated against. You would think this wouldn’t be a problem in this day and age but it is and needs to be addressed and not just by Black people. Recently, I was interviewed for my 25th anniversary as a 911 dispatcher. I was asked if I was glad the “animosity” towards law enforcement had died down somewhat. I told him I welcomed the scrutiny. We in this profession need to be held accountable. If it leads to better training and fair treatment of all, then hell yes. If it leads to reallocation of some of the funds to tackle the issues causing police involvement, wonderful. It’s not that hard to be a decent person. Do your own research. Keep learning. It’s what I try to do. I’m far from perfect, but I try my best to keep improving and call out racism when I see or hear it. In this spontaneous world we live in, I am glad you are here to adventure through it with me. ——— This pup can always sense my pain, even when I am holding it in. Yesterday my family’s beagle, Gambit left us. He was my sunshine. I raise him from high school until I had to leave him with my family in PA for grad school. He was your typical barking beagle, who would not have done well in an apartment. He died from prostate cancer that had spread to his pancreas. He is no longer in pain, which makes me happy. In a Golden Gate of mind. Subi had her cracked premolar removed on Monday. The recovery was a struggle for a few days due to her sensitive stomach and low pain tolerance. She’s had her appetite since coming home and even began yelling again yesterday! She seems back to her normal self now, except no toys or hard food for 2 weeks. Occasionally, Subi does look around for one to carry. I’m excited to see her face when we give them back.
