Looking back at a 2014 PCT thru-hike a decade later | Day 7 | April 30 | Warner Springs to Sky Ranch Sanctuary | Miles 109.3-127.3 | I left town via an alternate route, road walking until I reached Agua Caliente Creek, the first flowing creek I had encountered and drank from thus far on the trail. There I found an old adobe church, built from wood and earth taken from the nearby hills nearly two centuries ago. The door was open and the chapel empty so I entered. Inside there was a beautiful and quiet ambience about the space. Candles hung on the walls and Easter lilies sat atop the altar. A small bird flew among the hand-split wooden beams and finally settled upon a windowsill next to a statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe and a vase full of daffodils. It began to tap its tiny beak against the window pane. Outside, a little finch, its head stained a beautiful purple, tapped back. The chapel was named for St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the natural environment. At the time, the three were part of a ten member community in Schwarzach, Germany ministering to an orphanage. The sisters first settled in the village of New Cassel, Wisconsin (Now Campbellsport, Wisconsin). In 1885, the School Sisters of St. Francis relocated to Winona, Minnesota but by 1887, they returned to build their motherhouse in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. By that time, their community had grown tremendously and the sisters operated schools in five different states! Pictured above is St. Josephโs Convent, which served as the motherhouse, and St. Joseph Chapel on the left. Within the motherhouse, St. Josephโs Normal School began teaching classes to train sisters to serve as teachers. It would go on to be known as Alverno College. In 1893, the sisters opened the Sacred Heart Sanitorium near the motherhouse. Mother Alexia returned to Europe in 1895 to work in Germany and Switzerland, forming communities of sisters to serve the schools, orphanages, and sanitariums. The sisters continued to expand, opening high schools, colleges, convents and hospitals. In the 1930s, the sisters shifted their focus from Americans to other countries. Over the decades, they established numerous hospitals in Germany, a school in China, two missions in India, and an orphanage in Honduras. Eventually, they established a new province, the Union of Latin American Franciscans, to govern the missions in Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, and Mexico. After Vatican II, the School Sisters of St. Francis reevaluated their missionary nature and changed their Constitutions and Rule of Life, dedicating themselves to a new understanding of the Gospel and its call to service. #americasholyland #wisconsincatholic #ssfd #stfrancis
