Mommy spotted this snake right as we were about to step off the porch while going out for my morning potty. Now, Mommy is still not allowed to lift anything over 20lbs, but she snatched me up SO fast before I even had a chance to step into the yard! Thank goodness this snake stuck out so much, some of the snakes we’ve run across in the past have been pretty well camouflaged. So….this happened at the dog park today. As you can tell by my face, I was startled and confused. I have many friends who are boy dogs but this has never happened to me before. This young rogue and his brother seemed nice enough when we arrived and weren’t aggressive or anything. I was a little nervous because I am still limping pretty badly with my hurt leg so mom was keeping a close eye on things. I was getting a drink from the water bowl when I was grabbed from behind. Mom yelled at the dog and ran over to scare him off. He was pretty persistent. His owner was apologetic, but a few minutes later, his brother tried it, too! Amber’s first sport trial was a smashing success!!! We participated in our local club’s NASDA trial and Amber competed in Urban Locate, which is very similar to Barn Hunt. She absolutely killed it in her first round, finding the gerbil in an impressive 4.6 seconds and earning herself a High in Class award. Her second round was also very nice, and she’s now more than halfway to her Urban Locate Level I title. She would have finished this weekend if I had entered her in both days, but I wasn’t sure how she’d like the trial environment and didn’t want to overwhelm her. Our little Frodo was 18 years old when he passed away in 2021. We knew that Frodo would want us to get another dog, but I didn’t want a puppy. We heard that many families surrender senior dogs to a shelter after their owners pass away, and we can understand that decision, as we know that taking care of a senior dog has its challenges. It has been in our hearts to adopt a senior yorkie, and we are happy to announce that we just adopted Nikko at Oregon Humane Society. Nikko is a 13-year-old Yorkie mix, his mom is in hospice and could not take care of him anymore. The drive to get him was filled of uncertainty, as we didn’t know we would get him, and the drive back was filled of mix of exciment and worry, as Nikko was a bit anxious. We felt like new parents trying to figure out leash, food, treats, bedding, and toys. Glad to say that Nikko finally settled down and is taking a well-deserved nap. And we are exhausted.

In 2009 my mom and I took the ferry to pick up Kuma in Courtney. He was just 7 weeks old. Last week on Wednesday, Kuma turned 15! We spent the afternoon around the seawall, one of his favorite activities and I made him wear a colorful lei because it was such a special day. We then took the aquabus back to Granville Island where I parked my car. It was such a beautiful day 😍 Each day that I get to spend with him is a gift now. I am so grateful to have a pup with such a sweet, gentle nature and he has been at my side for all my life events, including losing my first cat Gino, my eternal feline soulmate, and the death of my mom last year - the most painful event of my life. I still grieve each day in some form, at times it is unbearable but he is a constant, loving being at my side. As much as he is a handful at times now that he needs lots of care and patience, I cannot imagine my day without him. Sometimes I think I need him more than he needs me. Like a leaf floating gently down the river of time, he chooses each day to float next to me and always in my sight, comforting me, letting me know that I can get through this day and tomorrow too. #blackandtanshiba #seniordog
