NFS | 1993 Drop Nineteens ‘National Coma’ Longsleeve on a Raw XL The single greatest American shoegaze act- Drop Nineteens formed in 1990 literally down the street from my apartment in Boston, Massachusetts. Lead singer Greg Ackell and original drummer Chris Roof met at boarding school and the pair would sneak into shows at the Paradise Rock Club (as told by Greg himself at their recent show). At Boston University they would go onto recruit Paula Kelley, Motohiro Yasue and Steve Zimmerman under the name ‘April Rain’. Ultimately changing their name to Drop Nineteens before recording the Mayfield demos which appeared physically for the first time ever on vinyl at the shows (I have a couple extra copies- message me if you’re after one). They were eventually signed to Caroline records after performing a cover of Madonna’s “Angel” during a show with Chapterhouse. in 1992 they would release their first studio album ‘Delaware’ featuring the song “Winona” which garnered airplay on MTV. The album saw more copies sell in Europe than the United States and they embarked on both a national and overseas tour with openers including Radiohead and The Cranberries. They would go onto release one more album ‘National Coma’ before disbanding in 1995, reuniting in 2022 to release ‘Hard Light’ in 2023. One of our favorite bands ever and seeing them live after 30 years only reaffirmed my opinion. Insane show I think Angel might have been the best song I have ever seen live, we each saw a show in a different state and each managed to grab a setlist too. Picked this tee up from @jerks.store who got it directly from Greg with their collaborative collection, gotta be like 5-10 of these total floating around.

Swervedriver Swervedriver from Oxford in the UK signed to Creation records in 1990 & were linked to their contemporaries at the time as a “Shoegaze” band which I don’t think is entirely fair / accurate . Swervedriver for mine were more just a great 2 guitarist rock & roll band that drew from the lineage of rock music dating back to the Stooges (they were initially called “Shake Appeal” which says it all really). You can hear influences such as Dinosaur Jr / Sonic Youth shine through more than any of the UK bands at the time. ‘Mezcal Head’ released in 1993 is a sonic whirlwind of distorted guitars, driving rhythms, and ethereal melodies.. Swervies signature wall of sound, crafted by the intertwining guitars of Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge, creates a dense sonic landscape matched by with melodic hooks. This is a reissue that came out in 2009, sounds great. Swervies may be my favorite band from that era & fortunately for all of us their material since reforming in 2009 has been incredible. Some of the best nights I can recall were standing in the front row watching Adam & Jimmy on those Fender Jaguars fill the room with the gigantic wall of sound. Starting my “Top 5” for 3DO. Yes, many of these games appeared on other consoles in some form or another, or are ports. However, they really shine on the Panasonic 3DO. My number 1 has always been the 32-Bit Road Rash. The first time I played this was at an after school daycare at a local church of all places. 90s vinyl nearly always sounds great. Sadly though there’s often pressing issues especially when CDs were dominant and the quality control might be a bit slack. I just happened to get one of these. Plays fine with a little additional tracking weight although I don’t recommend this. It’s a careful balancing act to make sure the cart doesn’t touch the vinyl. There’s a couple of places on just one side where the stylus sticks. There’s no obvious mark but I’ve come across this before. You just have to improvise. In this case it’s well worth it. I have the two earlier #swervedriver albums but I bought this originally on CD and it’s probably my favourite. It was overlooked at the time because of Oasis et al at Creation. NFS | Lush ‘500’ 1996 4AD Sealed Red Translucent Press A fantastic copy from 1996 this Lush single was released on July 15th. Definitely an interesting copy as it features no credits on the sleeve (just the label). Limited to 5,000 copies the songs on this 7” feature Lush’s distinctive later sound and feel good vibes. This copy is still sealed in its lovely original packaging produced by Vaughan Oliver at V23. Really happy to have this one tucked away in the collection. There is just something about V23 artwork that I absolutely love. Hard to come by sealed originals for bands I like, waiting for the right time to open this one.

NFS | 1990 Catherine Wheel ‘Ferment’ XL on a Euro Tag Formed in 1990 in Great Yarmouth, Catherine Wheel was comprised of Rob Dickinson, Brian Futter, Dave Hawes and Neil Sims. After releasing two EPs they were signed by Fontana Records after being courted by both Creation and Brian Eno’s label Opal Records; releasing their first full length ‘Ferment’ in 1992. The release made an immediate impression with the press and garnered airplay in both the UK and the US although it never experienced major chart success. They would go on to release 4 more albums- Chrome, Happy Days, Adam and Eve and Wishville before going on a hiatus in 2000. While a lot of people consider Chrome to be their best album I personally am a bigger fan of this one. Pretty impossible to beat a debut album that opens with “Texture” “I Want to Touch You” and “Black Metallic”. Also find them to be a lot less shoegazey than the bands they are typically grouped with but they definitely shed that label more and more with each release. Feel like nobody is ever selling these for some reason so took me a while to hunt one down, managed to grab this in a trade with the homie @temperaturesrising at Faded in the fall- hopefully we’ll see some of you there this year.

My new gig is keeping me pretty busy so I don’t have as much time to sit and listen to records as I used to. But I did today and it was great because I’ve recently picked up some real gems. Like the new Bolts of Melody, which as of now is my favorite album of 2024. It’s seriously so so good. This is Adam Franklin’s (of Swervedriver) other band, and they haven’t done a record in forever. But it was totally worth the wait because this sounds like the music from all those weirdo and wild Italian films from the 60s and 70s, and I love it so much. Swervedriver - 99th Dream (1998, 2024 reissue) Had to get a copy of this reissue when it was released a few weeks back, of course. Have to admit I didn’t play the original CD I bought back in ‘98 too much, like quite a few others I was a bit disappointed that the roaring guitars were dialled down compared with the three first albums. Funny thing is that I had more or less the same reaction when I first played the reissue and it wasn’t really until last night, when I poured myself a generous glass of a small-batch whiskey from a bottle bought in Cork last year and gave 99th Dream a late night spin, that the music suddenly opened up and started making sense. Could just be that the strong influences from late sixities psychedelic rock in the melodies and harmonies create a fairly intricate sonic environment that requires the full attention of the listener (and a bit of whiskey). Anyway, one of the things I realised while listening last night was how songs like Electric 77 contain the seeds of the flowing psychedelic indie sound later explored so successfully by bands like Tame Impala and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. NFS | 1992 Slowdive EP Poster Signed by the Entire Band The debut self titled EP from my favorite band of all time. This poster is from the original release on SBK records for North America in 1992. SBK records and slowdive had a rocky relationship due to cancelled tours, album delays, manufacturing issues and just about everything else in the book (check out the slide with the tour booklet from ‘94). Always been a massive fan of this album artwork. This poster was signed by the entire band after their recent tour which I still need to post some pictures and videos from that show.
