An open bowl with âfolded paperâ decoration and an upright bowl with zigzag decoration. The technique is the same: theyâre thrown with a dark clay and slipped with a pale clay⊠which I partially remove once leather hard to reveal the darker body beneath. I love this sgraffito technique and got very into cross-hatching on the open bowl to try to give a sense of shadows. The term âindirect paintingâ is a fancy way of saying paint applied in layers, in contrast to direct or alla prima painting, which implies you painted and finished it one sitting. I love working in layers: an initial block in (or ebauche for all you fancy French painting terms people) then subsequent layers to refine. I have the chance to correct and adjust all of my observations, even sanding out sections I want to do over or adding thin, transparent layers to create luminosity and depth. I couldnât help myself, I needed a little snack while unloading the kilns today. Kidding, but doesnât it fool your eye? Didnât you look twice? And these photos show how some pieces of fruit and cheese can be removed from the plate. Cassie put so much time and effort into every part of this project. Though she grew tired of spending her lunchtime in the studio, it was worth it! This is incredible work, and it provides an excellent example of how underglazes, gloss and matte glazes can be combined in one piece. This is the first of many fantastic trompe lâoeil sculptures by intermediate ceramics students. An open bowl with âfolded paperâ decoration and an upright bowl with zigzag decoration. The technique is the same: theyâre thrown with a dark clay and slipped with a pale clay⊠which I partially remove once leather hard to reveal the darker body beneath. I love this sgraffito technique and got very into cross-hatching on the open bowl to try to give a sense of shadows. The striped rim was inspired by Mimbres pottery⊠thanks to a reminder by isatuhyde đđ As all ceramicists know, thereâs so much that can go wrong between now and the finished stage⊠thereâs never room for complacency so we are philosophical and cross our fingers! #openbowl #sgrafitto #trompeloeil #zigzagdecoration #mimbrespottery #jamesandtillawaters
