Synestia, Disembodied Tyrant: The Poetic Edda (2024) Split EP review Music: 4.5/5 Artwork: 4/5 Rapid strings à la Vivaldi, orchestral flair akin to Fleshgod Apocalypse, drum and riffage insanity similar to Inferi, and bombastic break downs like Lorna Shore – all combined together… Why, may one ask? Well, why the hell not! Synestia and Disembodied Tyrant, two fairly new acts in the realm modern deathcore, joined forces for this EP split. Sam Melchior (US) and Ville Hokkanen (Finland) founded Synestia in 2020, and released one album “Maleficium” in 2022. DT on the other hand is a solo project by Blake Mullens with a similar musical vision and style. The trio weaved together a hyper-dynamic, energetic, and vicious piece of modern deathcore, filled to the brim with bombastic symphonics and world-ending soundscapes. These guys are riding the upwind that symphonic deathcore has been providing over the last few years, also thanks to the popularity of bands such Mental Cruelty, Shadow of Intent, and of course Lorna Shore. This EP is a wild zigzag from one firework to the next. When they are not increasing the intensity of the orchestral arrangements, the trio would otherwise speed up the drums, throw in savage, progressive riffs or just fully slow down for crushing breakdowns (“The Poetic Edda”). Every song is engaging and entertaining from start to finish, technically proficient, brutal in its execution and cinematic in its atmosphere. It feels like a veritable apocalypse but with an orchestra in the background. This gets me to the filthy breakdowns which, as of 2024 have become somewhat of a pissing contest: more brutal, more burps, more shrieks, more of everything, and all of it potentially impeding fluidity and concise song writing. Although these guys indulge breakdown savagery, they fortunately kept it under control, so it is awesome when it happens but does not overstay its welcome. Bravo! The EP ends with a deathcore cover of Vivaldi’s world-famous “Winter”, and considering how well this collaboration worked, I believe these three should join forces permanently to craft a proper full-length album. @disembodiedtyrant @synestia_band
