From the LISTEN project on this day: Royal Recording Studio, Memphis, TN May 7, 2008 The original structure was built in 1915 as the Shamrock movie theater, later called the Rex, and finally, in the 1920s, the Royal Theatre until its closing in 1955. In 1956 Hi Records president Joe Cuoghi bought the building and converted it to a recording facility. In the 1960s, recording artist and producer Willie Mitchell created a distinct Memphis soul sound at Royal Recording. Mitchell signed Al Green to a record deal in 1968, setting the stage for a string of soul hits in the 1970s. Ann Peebles also released a series of hits on Hi in that decade, including “I Can’t Stand the Rain” and “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down.” Mitchell guided Otis Clay and O.V. Wright through many successful records. In 1975 Rod Stewart recorded his hit cover of “This Old Heart of Mine,” a song written by Motown songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland. In 1972, Al Green and producer Willie Mitchell reached the mountain top with two number one R&B/top 10 pop albums with “Al Green Gets Next To You” and “I’m Still In Love With You”. Driven by that success, this legendary duo continued creating at a break neck pace for the next five years. “Call Me” is the sixth studio album from Al Green but it is the third of his six consecutive #1’s and considered by many to be his best album. Along with three top 10 singles - “You Ought To Be With Me”, “Here I Am (Come And Take Me)” and “Call Me (Come Back Home)” - this album contains wonderful album cuts like “Have You Been Making Out O.K.”, his Hank Williams cover, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and the stirring tune “Jesus Is Waiting”. Honestly, there isn’t a bad song to be found here. As with a lot of Green’s work, many of the songs on “Call Me” were religious songs disguised as love songs. Royal Studios. Memphis, TN I needed a third post just to immortalize it all. I met Leroy “Flick” Hodges and watched him work. He is one of the greatest soul bass players of all time. A living legend. Watching him play with the phenomenal Steve Potts on drums was just a joy along with Reverend Charles Hodges on organ and Archie “Hubbie” Turner on Wurlitzer. Shout out to @linabeachmusic on second guitar sounding killer and representing the studio’s next generation. And shout out to @karagrainger and @boomitchellmemphis for orchestrating the whole affair. Kara got to sing into THE #9 mic that Al Green sang everything on. I couldn’t help but add pictures of my pilgrimages. Before driving back to Nashville, I visited the graves of both legendary drummers from this place. Howard Grimes and Al Jackson Jr. This was my third trip to Al’s grave and to be honest, every one of these visits feels like an honor and a moment of pure zen. 2.17 - Happy 48th Bday to Al Green’s 1976 LP (Hi), “Full Of Fire”! “Full Of Fire” is Al Green’s 10th studio album and his ninth in partnership with legendary Memphis producer Willie Mitchell. By 1976, Green had said almost all that he had to say when it came to secular music. He was beginning to transition to gospel and “Full Of Fire” is a clear turning point. While not a Gospel album, the nine songs on it are almost all either directly or indirectly about God. That same year, Green established the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis. “Full Of Fire” would mark the end of an incredible streak of six #1 R&B albums from Green and Mitchell from 1972-75. “Full Of Fire” still did well as it climbed to #12 on the R&B and #59 on the pop charts. It would be the last time that Green would crack the top 60 on the pop charts. “Full Of Fire” is mostly known for its title track, but, songs like “There’s No Way”, “Soon As I Get Home” and “Let It Shine” are excellent as well. Green’s transition away from secular music is often linked to a 1974 tragedy where he was attacked in his home by a girl friend who subsequently committed suicide. Green had other demons as evidenced by a few assault charges in the 1970’s and accusations of domestic abuse in the 80’s. Green continued releasing albums over the years and won several Grammys for his gospel records. His last album was a 2008 album, “Lay It Down”, that was produced by Questlove and James Poyser. That was his first to crack the pop and R&B top 10 since 1973’s “Call Me”. It also earned him a Grammy nomination for “Best R&B Album”.
