If you’ve visited a California beach this spring, chances are you’ve seen some of these. By-the-wind sailors are hydrozoans that live on the surface of the open ocean. Each “individual” is actually a colony of smaller animals, usually deep blue, with an air-filled void in its base and a small, stiff sail that catches the wind and propels it across the water. Sailors are at the mercy of the wind, and when conditions are unfavorable, they’re at risk of mass strandings. These events are common on the West Coast, and this spring strong onshore winds washed untold millions of sailors onto our beaches. When we visited Abbott’s Lagoon, the beach was dotted with stranded sailors, and the tideline was thick with their papery carcasses. Seeing all this carnage is a bit alarming, but there is some evidence that the same conditions that lead to mass strandings also cause increased populations of sailors, so maybe the situation isn’t as grim as it appears. 🤔 By-the-wind sailors catch their prey —usually plankton — by means of tentacles that hang down in the water. These contain cells that deliver a toxin used to disable prey and defend against predators. The toxin is considered benign to humans, but it’s best to wash your hands if you pick up a sailor for a closer look. And try to keep them out of the mouths of your four-legged friends. . . . . . . . #bythewindsailor #velellavelella #bythewindsailors #velella #hydrozoa #cnidaria #invertebrates #invertebratesofinstagram #marinelife #marinebiology #abbottslagoon #pointreyesnationalseashore #nps #pointreyes #marinnature #baynature #ignature #naturegram #naturephotography #naturejournal

Wait. It comes in white? We’re used to seeing patches of butter ‘n’ eggs (Triphysaria eriantha) in East Bay grasslands like Morgan Territory. Also known as johnnytuck, this member of the weird and wonderful broomrape family is a native of California and southwest Oregon. Like many of its relatives, it’s a hemiparasite which can photosynthesize but also taps into the roots of surrounding plants to extract nutrients and water. The flowers are divided into two lips — a very narrow, purple upper lip and a much wider lower one, which is in turn divided into three pouches. The color of these pouches determines the subspecies; in the East Bay, we see the more common subspecies, T. eriantha eriantha, which has bright yellow pouches. Here at Abbott’s Lagoon, the grassy hills are graced with a rare subspecies, T. eriantha rosea, which sports white pouches, tinged with pink. Pink butter ‘n’ eggs — how elegant! . . . . . . . . #butterneggs #triphysariaerianthassprosea #triphysariaeriantha #johnnytuck #orobanchaceae #canativeplants #californianativeplants #californiawildflowers #wildflowersofcalifornia #wildflowers #wildflowersofinstagram #wildflowerseason #abbottslagoontrail #abbottslagoon #pointreyesnationalseashore #pointreyes #nps #marinnature #baynature #ignature #naturegram #naturephotography #naturejournal

Meet Velella velella, AKA “By-the Wind-Sailors.” Swaths of them were washed up on Point Reyes Beach last week on my very last day on the west coast. They’re related to jellyfish and the Portuguese man-of-war, so they have tentacles. But they also have this crazy little sail that runs across the top of their bodies. Apparently, they travel in large numbers at the top of the open sea, completely at the mercy of the wind and ocean currents. And get this: they’re either “right- or left-handed,” meaning their sails are oriented in one direction or the other, and they tend to stick to their own groups (right with right, left with left). Sound familiar? Zoom in on the images to see just how cool they are. #pointreyesnationalseashore #abbottslagoon #velellavelella

Pussy ears aren’t the only furry things at Abbott’s Lagoon right now. These plush caterpillars were all over the sedges along the trail when we visited. This is the larva of the white tipped ctenucha moth, a native of low latitudes along the west coast of North America. It’s found in coastal grasslands along the ocean — like Abbott’s Lagoon — as well as boggy meadows and wet prairies, where it feeds on grasses and sedges. The adults are brilliant black, blue and orange, and are on the wing from June to September. They’re day-flying, so maybe if we came back at the right time we could catch them in all their glory! Don’t you love the little feet? We learned that caterpillars have only 3 pairs of permanent legs; the rest are soft, thick legs that support their long bodies but disappear after metamorphosis. Which seems obvious, really, because insects only have six legs. 😜 . . . . . . . #whitetippedctenucha #ctenucharubroscapus #redshoulderedctenuchamoth #redshoulderedctenucha #erebidae #mothsofcalifornia #mothsofinstagram #caterpillar #caterpillarsofinstagram #larvae #abbottslagoontrail #abbottslagoon #pointreyesnationalseashore #pointreyes #nps #marinnature #baynature #ignature #naturegram #naturephotography #naturejournal

Fuzzy! Pussy ears, Calochortus tolmei. I really love finding any of the many species of Calochortus. There were hundreds of these, possibly more than I've ever seen blooming at one time. Up on a bluff overlooking Abbotts Lagoon at Point Reyes National Seashore, and I'm lucky I didn't get blown off by the very strong wind. But these flowers are low to the ground, so the wind wasn't affecting them. They were about as big as a half-dollar (does anyone ever see that coin any more?). That is a Goldfields photobombing, and there were a lot of those as well. 4/22/2024 #calochortustolmei #pointreyesnationalseashore #abbottslagoon #IBrakeForWildflowers #wildflowers #nativeplants #wildflowerphotography #californianaturalist #californiawildflowers #californiawildflowerhikes #californianativeplants #calnatshare

Looking for hiking ideas? The 2024 Point Reyes Hiking Calendar is here! Every year Lena Zentall, an EAC member, park volunteer and creator of Point Reyes Nature, puts together an amazing guide to hiking on the trails in Point Reyes National Seashore. Each month features a new hike along with seasonal highlights and ways to engage more deeply with the Seashore. Next month’s featured trail is the Lush Bolinas Ridge Trail South. March offers a vibrant landscape with early spring wildflowers like the California Fetid Adderstongue and Pacific Trillium. With average temperatures ranging from 46 to 61°F and occasional rain totaling 5.1 inches over 7 days, it’s the perfect time to experience the redwoods. In April, discover the Estero Trail. Hike from either end of the Estero Trail –from the Trailhead to the Sunset Trail/Drakes Head split or from the Muddy Hollow end of the trail. You will have gorgeous views of Drakes Estero on the former and shaded bishop pine forest and many wildflowers on the latter. In May, explore Abbotts Lagoon Dunes, where you can encounter a variety of insects, plants, birds, and perhaps even a river otter family. With average temperatures between 49 and 69°F and just 2 days of rain totaling 0.8 inches, May is the perfect time for a sunset beach hike. A spotted towhee speeding across the brush at Abbotts Lagoon at Point Reyes National Seashore. The spotted towhee are known to rake the ground with their feet in a short scraping jump. This can uncover seeds and insects for them to forage. This tactic of rustling leaves and ground material makes them quite noisy. The word towhee is an onomatopoeia, it is an imitation of the call of the bird now identified as the eastern towhee. The one seen here was flying straight at me, maybe it was curious if my footsteps uncovered any good seeds. #spottedtowhee #towhee #abbottslagoon #pointreyes #pointreyesnationalseashore #birdphotography #bird #wildlife #wildlifephotography

I first thought this was a juvenile bald eagle. But then started to suspect a Golden instead. It was huge, bigger than what a young bald eagle would be at that age, so it seemed. So now I'm not sure. I'll be happy if any of you can tell for sure, please let me know. It was so far out, just about to far for my 600 lens. It was being heckled by a number of crows putting on an incredible show of aerial stunts. #birdsinflight #eagles #baldeagles #goldeneagles # ptreyes #californiacoast #audubon #mtdiablobirdalliance #abbottslagoon #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #landscapephotography #composites #birdphotography #beachphotography #bayarea #Haliaeetusleucocephalus #birdsofprey #predators #waterbirds #unitedstatessymbol #treenesters

A coyote patiently waiting for its peer to hunt at Abbotts Lagoon. This coyote was strolling around the fields next to Abbotts Lagoon, and sat down (third photo) in the cool morning dew grass to wait. A coyote shaking off the morning rain at Point Reyes National Seashore. I just happened to catch a coyote mid-hunt when it took a quick break to shake off the rain. Its ears and coat flopped around, making for a particularly disheveled appearance. If you look closely, you can see the spray of droplets above. No matter though, the coyote was successful in its hunt afterwards, grabbing a gopher and quickly devouring it. #coyote #pointreyesnationalseashore #pointreyes #abbottslagoon #animalphotography #wildlifephotography

A great blue heron on the shores of Abbotts Lagoon in Point Reyes National Seashore. Great blue herons have a six foot wingspan and can fly 30 miles per hour. In order to keep cool, they can flutter their throat muscles to increase evaporation. The have a wide variety of feather types including: Occipital plumes - the black feathers extending from the rear of their head. Bib feathers - chest and scapula feathers that grow continuously and fray. The powder down feathers break down into a powder like dust that is used for cleaning the beak and feathers of oil and fish from spending so much time in murky waters. #greatblueheron #heron #abbottslagoon #pointreyesnationalseashore #pointreyes #bird #birdphotography #animalphotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography

A sanderling sandpiper on the shores of Abbotts Lagoon in Point Reyes National Seashore. Sanderlings are one of the most common shorebirds in the world. They are known for scurrying along beach shores to feed, whereas many other shorebirds will tend to probe through mud. They have adapted a missing hind toe; this allows them to run quickly as they move about sandy beaches. In popular culture, Pixar’s short film Piper features the dramatized struggles of a young sanderling sandpiper. #sanderling #sandpiper #pointreyes #pointreyesnationalseashore #birdphotography #animalphotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #abbottslagoon

Abbotts Lagoon birding has been great this year. Despite all the river otter activity, numerous birds have been stopping and resting, many of them still making moves along their migration. Speaking of migrations, I’ve been thinking a lot about travel and birding lately. @ginagraziano and I are leaving soon for a month-long trip to Japan, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand!
