Mediterranean Linseed is a member of the Orobanchaceae or Broomrape family. When volunteering last weekend, I was informed that this plant is in the process of being listed as its own species. Seeing the recent post of @bustapbj I thought I would highlight it too! I was able to see it last year, and this year. It grows in moist maritime meadows and seeps, and at the margins of vernal pools. This species was formerly (still is for a while?) described as Tryphysaria versicolor, but in Canada populations are distinct and disjunct (by over 400km North) from populations elsewhere in its main range, down in Oregon and California (US). It is extremely rare, and susceptible to trampling! Last year while visiting this population, off-leash dogs were present on site. It was quite stressful, but I was able to educate some visitors, who were really intrigued and appreciative of that knowledge sharing. People do care, they’re just unaware. According to the last COSEWIC Report for Bearded Owl-Clover: “Species are threatened by habitat loss and loss of individuals due to recreational activities, introduced invasive species, and residential development.” Often I ponder how much we have yet to learn about Garry Oak ecosystem, and how much we will never be able to learn. A study in Castilleja for the weary traveler. I’ve decided that I can never leave the desert. Admittedly, it was a love that took a long time to grow, and many things needed to happen during the process. Now? I’ve come to learn that the desert keeps its’ beauty hidden until the right season. And then? You’d better go immerse yourself.♥️ . Castilleja angustifolia. Paintbrush. Prairie fire. Orobanchaceae family. ❤️🔥🖌️ . This paintbrush is usually between 6-18” tall, and has bristly gray-green to purple-red stems. It stands in a clump of erect stems, each topped with an inflorescence of green tubular flowers and bright red to orange-red bracts (modified leaves to look like petals). A distinguishing feature of this species is that the bracts are divided into 3-5 lobes. The brightly colored bracts are usually mistaken for petals, and are used to attract pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies that would otherwise ignore the plant’s small yellow-green flowers.This species here is usually fuzzy with a thin coat of white hairs. . The flowers are actually long greenish, tubular things sticking out from the bracts. The bracts are surrounding them and I forgot to get a close up pic of them. . In the Orobanchaceae family, all members are parasitic on other chlorophyll-producing plants. Castilleja is hemi-parasitic, meaning that it can photosynthesize on its’ own, but is usually found scouring nutrients from neighboring plants. Pedicularis refracta var. transmorrisonensis (Hayata) Hurus. (馬先蒿) grows at middle to high elevations in Taiwan and has interesting disjunct distribution pattern. It was reconfirmed as an endemic variety, which was published in 2019, with another variety distributed in Kyushu, Japan. According to this paper, the disjunct distribution pattern between P. refracta var. transmorrisonensis in Taiwan and P. refracta var. refracta in Japan may be caused by ”Quaternary vicariance events.“ Approximately one million years ago in the Pleistocene, Taiwan, Ryukyu, and Japan were connected landmasses, and P. refracta may have been distributed throughout the area as a large population. Very happy to report that the half-yearly magazine FloraCH of Info Flora has chosen one of my photos for its cover page, for the second time. Info Flora (www.infoflora.ch, @infoflora_ch) is the national data center for the Swiss flora. Together with many other Swiss botanists, both amateurs and professionals, I report all my finds in Switzerland to Info Flora. In its 30-year existence it has collected more than 11 million records. The picture shows of course Melampyrum arvense, Acker-Wachtelweizen, field cow-wheat, a hemiparasite with a conspicuous colored spike of flowers and bracts. It is rated VU on the Swiss red list, but can still be seen in many dry fields and meadows of the wonderful Unterengadin. If you are curious about the photography: the nice bokeh of this picture is due to using Nikon‘s amazing 105mm f/2.8 macro lens at close range. Shot at f/8, 1/250s. Light was all natural. Ik heb heidekartelblad (Pedicularis sylvatica) voor het eerst gezien vandaag aan de rand van een heideveld op de Veluwe. Op een klein drassig open stuk heide dat over gaat in gras, waar we in de zomer ook de klokjesgentiaan vinden. Het is een zeldzame en kwetsbare éénjarige halfparasiet van de bremraapfamilie. Heidekartelblad wordt door uitdroging, bemesting en stikstofverrijking bedreigd in Nederland. Castilleja foliolosa • Orobanchaceae Signals of spring, these red hot fireballs are steadily emerging to indicate the changing of seasons. The photo saturation is not edited - they quite literally glow in the sunlight. Which is fitting because clusters of flowers like these are called an inflorescence. Floral shape & habit is a distinct feature for its plant family, the broomrapes or broom tubers. They are also known for being parasitic. Castellija foliolosa is only semi-parasitic whereby it will attach its roots to nearby plants for nutrients, but can live independently when resources are available. This particular species is commonly named Texas or Woolly Paintbrush - hairy, yes; native to the southern US, no. They are found up and down the state of California, often settling into dry crevices and cracks. Paintbrush szn 🧡 Castilleja is a genus of hemiparasites that mostly, um, "share" resources with prairie grasses, although they also take from some forbs too; they are even able to latch their haustoria onto some invasive species that threaten their habitat, such as Oxeye Daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare). The nature of this genus's partial parasitism means that it's more or less impossible to transplant the flowers, although they are possible to grow from seed. It's rarely a good idea to dig up plants, but these are particularly fickle. I-49 and perhaps other sections of Arkansas interstates are often planted with this species, so if you see orange blobs at 75mph, you're probably seeing some paintbrushes this time of year.... but of course, they're prettier on the prairie. La Lathrée clandestine est une curiosité de la nature, car elle grandit sans chlorophylle. Les autres orobanches, souvent en montagne, ont un tout autre aspect, faisant plus penser à des orchidées. Cette clandestine possède un rhizome souterrain qui se mêle aux racines de l'arbre (ici, un jeune chêne) et pompe sa sève, mais à priori, sans mettre l'arbre en danger de mort. En France, on peut trouver des Lathrées sous une dizaine d'arbres feuillus.

PARASITES: A BEDTIME STORY Striga asiatica (“witchweed”) and Alectra sessiflora side-by-side in the diverse verge of the Market Square, corner Nodwengu and Havelock. Both of these plants are semi-parasitic. At this stage they evidently contain chlorophyll and photosynthesise, but supplement this by tapping into the roots of grasses for energy and nutrients. Striga, in particular, is a huge problem in some really important grasses - maize, sorghum and sugarcane. It can reduce maize yields by as much as 20% and is particularly problematic for small-scale and subsistence farmers who may not have means of dealing with it. One plant produces up to half a million minute seeds which can remain viable for 20 years. Germination is triggered by a chemical called ‘strigol’ released by the roots of host (and, importantly, certain non-host) plants. Being so small, a seed only contains enough energy for germination. Immediately after this, it taps into the host and relies on it entirely until it emerges and begins to photosynthesise. It then continues to draw from the host, but not as aggressively. It is during this post-germination, pre-emergence phase that most damage is done. Seemingly well-tended mielie plants will die back, mysteriously so, until the danger-red culprit reveals itself. Humans have figured out various ways of dealing with this, one example being ‘suicide germination’. A field will be planted with strigol-releasing non-host plants causing Striga seeds to germinate but then die due to an absence of actual host. A few seasons of this will reduce the Striga seedbank in the field. The situation of these two individuals, however, is perfect. They have a role to play in a this fringe ecosystem and brief opportunities to flower and feed pollinators in-between mowing events. The yellowish stems grow 10 to 60 centimeters tall and are coated in glandular hairs. Four weeks ago the first of these rare and parasitic Purple toothwort (Lathraea clandestina) started to flower. Now I went back to see them all in full flower. Luckily I don't have to travel far to for them, it is only ten minutes by bike from where I live. There you can find them growing together with lesser celandine (Ficaria verna), woodanemone (Anemone nemorosa) and Opposite-leaved golden saxifrage (Chrysosplenium oppositifolium). AMMONIA-FLAVORED NECTAR / AMMONIAK-NECTARTHERMOMETER (🇳🇱 hieronder) 🇬🇧 Purple toothwort lacks leaves and even green parts, yet it qualifies as a plant. This species thrives as a parasite on trees like willows and alders, infiltrating their roots to siphon off nutrients. Above ground, only its purple flowers emerge, meticulously adapted for bumblebee pollination. The low positioning of these flowers allows easy access to nectar extraction by non-pollinating animals. Hence, the purple toothwort has uniquely adapted its nectar composition, imbuing it with an unusually high concentration of ammonia, rendering it strongly basic with a pH level of up to 11.5—comparable to household ammonia. This adaptation is believed to deter birds and ants while remaining tolerable to bumblebees. 🇳🇱 De paarse schubwortel is een unieke plant zonder bladeren of groene delen, maar toch behoort hij tot het plantenrijk. Toothwort, 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘢 𝘴𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 is a fascinating plant with a dark secret. Lacking chlorophyll, it has to obtain nutrients by parasitizing the roots of host plants such as Hazel, Beech and Elm. Toothwort spends most of its life underground, popping out in little secretive clumps to briefly say hello to the world in early spring. Bumblebees and ants are attracted to the strange flowers, but Toothwort is mostly self-pollinating and can produce special underground flowers that fertilise themselves. Purple toothwort amongst the fallen magnolia petals in the water garden at Wakehurst. This alien looking plant is actually a parasite. It has no leaves and lives by extracting sugars and water from its host via its suckers called haustoria. In this case the host is a Japanese maple tree. You only know it’s there once a year in the spring when it puts its purple teeth up to say hello! It is not native to the UK, and has been intentionally ‘planted’ by the horticulturists at Wakehurst in the past by dividing a piece of haustoria and placing it in contact with a new host tree root. It is found in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, where it can be found growing in meadows, along roadsides and woodland edges. Orobanchaceae - Castilleja fissifolia L.f. El Venadillo o Guarguerón es una hierva nativa de las tierras altas de Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador y Perú. En Colombia se encuentra distribuida por la región andina y la sierra nevada de Santa Marta. El género Castilleja es reconocido debido a que sus especies son hemiparásitas, esto quiere decir que parasitan un planta huésped realizando un intercambio de agua y nutrientes por medio de unas estructuras denominadas haustorios.
