Happy Monday! Today I’m sharing a blog post I put together on a very simple mortification that Catholics are expected to do year-round— NOT just during Lent! Abstaining from meat on Fridays as a reminder that our Lord gave up His flesh for us on Good Friday. This tradition goes back as early as the first century, and is something that has been lost in modernity. I go into more details in the post about exceptions etc, but I also give a huge list of meatless meals and sides that we use to get through the year! A special bonus 🎉 You may find that you actually feel better breaking from the traditional American diet and embracing more fish as well! There are many vital minerals and vitamins found in fish that we tend to be very deficient in as Americans. (I’m always in awe of God’s providence and wisdom— we feel like we are denying ourselves and God provides abundantly in nourishing us!) If we want to grow in the spiritual life, our bodies have to be expressions of interior realities. Exercising discipline in physical matters and overcoming enslavement to our usual conveniences and comforts is one way we can aid our spiritual growth. Simple mortifications is conducive towards being disciplined in spiritual matters. The body-soul connection is so real. It’s quite literally how we were made. You get used to telling yourself no. That’s not something that’s encouraged in a “feel-good”-“you do you”-“you deserve it all” era. If you find you have conformed yourself more to the ways of the world and have denied taking up your cross and following Him, this is a simple way to reclaim a sense of true freedom from the parts of your will that are not yet properly ordered. The PTI Decides To Abstain From Participating In Senate Elections In Sindh Due To Alleged Widespread Electoral Manipulation The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has declared their decision to not participate in the Senate elections in Sindh, scheduled for April 2, due to claims of extensive electoral manipulation. “Senate elections are being manipulated to win,” stated PTI leader Haleem Adil Sheikh during a press conference held in Karachi on Sunday. The individual mentioned that candidates who won elections, as stated in Form 45, are not included in the Sindh Assembly. As a result, the Pakistan Peoples Party may secure one of the two reserved women’s seats without facing any competition. The United States voted to #abstain Monday on a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in #Gaza. The non-binding Security Council resolution was approved 14-0, with the United States abstaining. Nevertheless, to some extent, our sin may make us suffer consequences that God’s forgiveness will not take away. See the story of David's murder and adultery. (2 Samuel 11-12.) David acknowledges that the one who has done such a thing deserves to die (12:5). But in the end Nathan says, “The Lord also has taken away your sin; you shall not die” (12:13). But though the sin is taken away and the death sentence removed, Nathan says, “Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child that is born to you shall die” (12:14). Hebrews 12:14-17 "... lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears." Many people sell a birthright of intimacy with God as cheaply as Esau sold his birthright. Yes, God’s forgiveness is always there, and Esau could have come back to God. But he could not undo his act. Some consequences we will still have to endure them in this natural world. For example, if you gave birth outside marriage, you have to face the responsibilities and take care of the children who were as a result of that sin, even though you were forgiven. The Jauhar Kund is located inside the Chittorgarh Fort. The fort was built in the 7th century AD by Chitragad Mori of the Maurya Dynasty. Jauhar is basically an act of mass self-immolation, which was done by women and children to abstain and avoid enslavement, capture, and rape by the invaders while facing the defeat during the war.
