Born on this day in 1921, Alan Hale, Jr. became known to kids of my generation as “the Skipper” (Jonas Grumby) on the TV show Gilligan’s Island. Hale was the son of a successful actor and grew up in the Los Angeles area, becoming an actor himself at a young age. The Gilligan’s Island role caused him to be typecast (as it did for all of the actors on that show), but in addition to frequent reunion opportunities from the show, Hale was the visible front man for a seafood restaurant that traded on his fictional role. He also appeared on several talk and variety shows. Appearing in over 200 films and television roles, Hale's long acting career began in films in 1941, appearing primarily in Westerns, playing opposite Kirk Douglas in The Big Trees (1952), Audie Murphy in Destry (1954), Ray Milland in A Man Alone (1955), Robert Wagner in The True Story of Jesse James (1957) and Hugh Marlowe in The Long Rope (1961). He has also appeared in musical comedies, playing opposite Don DeFore in It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947), James Cagney in The West Point Story (1950) and Judy Canova in Honeychile (1951). He achieved continuing success in the CBS television sitcom Gilligan's Island (1964–1967), playing the secondary lead role of The Skipper. After its cancellation, the series would remain a popular staple in syndication. Alan had a long acting career, appearing in well over 200 films and TV series. He played he title role in the series “Casey Jones” (1957-1958) and played the recurring character Sculley in the series “The Texan” (1959-1960). Of course, Alan will always be best known for his role as the Skipper on “Gilligan’s Island” (1964-1967), a role he played for the show’s three seasons and reprised in three TV movies and two cartoon versions. Interestingly, as Jeff Pruitt in “The Andy Griffith Show,” he called Barney “little buddy” just as he would later call Gilligan. On this day in 1990, we remember the late Alan Hale Jr. who would have turned 103 in March. He was an American 🇺🇸 actor and restaurateur. He was the son of actor Alan Hale Sr. His television career spanned four decades, but he was best known for his secondary lead role as Captain Jonas Grumby, better known as The Skipper, on the 1960s CBS comedy series Gilligan’s Island (1964–1967), a role he reprised in three Gilligan’s Island television films and two spin-off cartoon series. Hale appeared in more than 200 films and television roles from 1941. He appeared primarily in Westerns, portraying the Sundance Kid in The Three Outlaws (1956) opposite Neville Brand as Butch Cassidy, performing with Kirk Douglas in The Big Trees (1952), Audie Murphy in Destry (1954), Ray Milland in A Man Alone (1955), Robert Wagner in The True Story of Jesse James (1957), and Hugh Marlowe in The Long Rope (1961). He also appeared in musical comedies opposite Don DeFore in It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947), James Cagney in The West Point Story (1950), and Judy Canova in Honeychile (1951). He also appeared on several talk and variety shows. Hale died on January 2, 1990, of thymus cancer at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles at age 68. His body was cremated, and his ashes were sprinkled into the Pacific Ocean. 60 years ago today, The Lucy Show episode “Lucy Puts Out a Fire at the Bank” aired. When the town council stops backing the Danfield Ladies Volunteer Fire Department, Captain Lucy agrees for the squad to go through special training. Lucy then stages a fire at the bank to show off what they learned. Five players from this episode, Lucille Ball, Vivian Vance, Gale Gordon, Mary Jane Croft, and Mary Wickes, would once again appear all together in the 1977 special Lucy Calls the President. This episode marked Mary Wickes’ third and final appearance as fire squad member Frances. Wickes would not return to the series until the fourth season’s “Lucy and the Sleeping Beauty” in 1965. Here’s a sketch of the cast of Gilligan’s Island, a very silly show that I saw a lot as a kid. The cast had some success in other things before this show, but got pretty typecast from it and some of them resented the way that other work was made unavailable to them. Jim Backus (Mr. Howell the millionaire, and aka the voice of Mr. Magoo) was probably the best known. The cast ultimately negotiated for syndication royalties, since the producers were making a lot more money than the cast. Probably the big hook for me (besides a couple of glamorous actresses in bikinis) was the framing sequences that were shot around Honolulu where I lived at the time.
