. Today, marks the 33rd anniversary since the Battle of Sulaymaniyah (07.03.1991.) As part of the Great Uprising of the Kurdish people against the former Iraqi Regime, that started on March 5th 1991. It was a significant and courageous battle that took place in Amna Suraka, also known as the Red Prison in Sulaymaniyah/Slemani. Out and about in beautiful, exceptionally donnish Slemani, second city of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Controlled by the Talabani Family, whose former patron is pictured in number five, it's a whole different flavor from Barzanitopia, whose hub is in Erbil. One of the main highlights was the Amna Suraka (Red Museum), a former Iraqi army intelligence facility and prison that now serves as a museum to the Peshmerga that combatted Saddam's regime for decades. Saddam was an Iraqi politician who served as a prime minister of Iraq. He was a leader of the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party that stands for Arab nationalism and freedom of non-Arab control. People who support Saddam Hussein defend and support his actions but forget to mention the crimes on minorities, for example The Kurds. People who defend Saddam often assume that it was Iran who committed those crimes against the Kurds. Those crimes should never be forgotten or repeated. I went to #sulaymaniyah in Northern #iraq where they turned a former prison for #kurdish people into a museum. This museum shows in many details what they had to get through during the #genocide , also known as #anfalcampaign . At least 100 000 kurdish people lost their lives, and some estimates go up to 180 000. In the museum, there is a wall showing the names of all the people known to have been killed. You can also walk through the #prison itself to see under what circumstances they had to live in and what they went through. They also put up statues to show more of the horrific crimes that happened there. Kids being marked as 18 years old, so they can be executed. Hundreds of people being put into tiny prison cells, people being whipped to death, electrocuted, etc. And why? So my emotional day continued with a visit to Amna Suraka, known as the red prison. It was the headquarters of Saddam Hussein's brutal secret police where so many were tortured and executed. The hall of mirror's made up of 182,000 shards of glass, one for every person killed and the 4,500 lights illuminating the ceiling are a testament to the number of villages destroyed. Everything else remains the same, the outside walls riddled with bullet holes. Inside are the cells and torture chambers, the haunting messages prisoners carved into the walls remain and do the bloodstains soaked into the floor. One cell was for under 18s, there ages were changed to allow their execution. In some cells dramatic sculptures have been created to depict the torture methods used. Again all so moving. The photographs show the victims, their names are written, they are not nameless victims, they are remembered. There is also a hall remembering those who died fighting ISIS. It was a heart wrenching day.

Amna Suraka, or ‘The Red Fortress’, is a former barracks and prison in Slemani used during Saddam’s oppressive Ba’athist regime. Now converted to a memorial and museum, the buildings still bear the scars of conflict. Bullet holes and disused heavy artillery litter the courtyard, and inside, a memorial to victims of Kurdish genocide provides details on this dark chapter in recent history. The hall of broken mirrors is especially sobering, each shard of glass representing a life lost. A more recent exhibit also gives details about the fight against ISIS. Day_ #163to #166 - Sulaymaniyah; Iraqi Kurdistan ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And then it was time for reaching my next destination: The city of Sulaymaniyah! About which I had heard that she cames to life after sunset with a lively street food market and is altogether a cooler city! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And although not a beauty herself Sulaymaniyah, is cool! She has a lovely street coffee culture during the day, two busy street food venues which do indeed awaken after sunset and being surrounded by majestic mountains she also has a popular viewpoint on top of Mount Azmar, where on my first evening kind Abas took me for enjoying the views with a cold beer and some appetizers! Somehow in Sulaymaniyah it is possible to stop for a beer even in non-Christian neighborhoods! Or so is my understanding. But Sulaymaniyah is not all "coffee & night markets" she also hosts an important museum dedicated to documenting the human rights abuses under Saddam's rule including a whole section dedicated to the Anfal Campaign and a last & more recent section dedicated to the Peshmerga fighters killed by ISIS - a documentation of the more recent years of conflicts which have affected this area and the Kurdish people. The "Red Museum" (as it is called for international visitors) is a "difficult" museum for the atrocities it documents (no pics here) even more so as it is located in what used to be Saddam regime's intelligence agency northern HQ and one of his infamous prisons! Amna Suraka Prison BETWEEN THE ARRIVAL OF THE first political prisoners in 1986 and the prison’s liberation by Kurdish Peshmerga on March 9 1991, Sulaymaniyah’s Amna Suraka, or Red Prison, functioned as the headquarters of the northern division of the Mukhabarat, Iraq’s secret i*ntelligence agency. Red Prison, the former headquarters of the northern division of Saddam Hussein’s secret intelligence agency. Thousands of people were detained here, tortured and killed. The plastic straps you can see on the walls of a room (and it is not the only room like this) were given to prisoners with their name on it and their execution date. Torture was about everything: body, mind, loved ones, dignity, rape… On several cells you can still spot on the walls some drawings or writings: love letters, letters to mothers or siblings, super hero figures, flowers, dream houses and of course mountains. The Kurds were one of the main targets of Saddam Hussein’s politics, and suffered the tragically known Anfal operation in the 1980s before being bombed again in the 1990s. No one was spared, not even the children: some of them, who were 12/13/14, were burned alive directly on the roads… The visit finishes with a few new rooms, dedicated to ISIS and their crimes. Amnasuraka Museum - Not to be Forgotten is known as the Red House. A former detention center used by Saddam Hussein’s regime from 1979 to 1991 now preserved as a memorial of the genocide campaigns against the Kurds in Iraq. What were named Anfal campaigns did approximately 80 000 deaths. Shattered buildings still standing poignantly reflect the atrocities as do sketches and pictures scratched on the walls of the former cells. This tragedy became a important constitutive element of Kudish national identity. The Amna Suraka Museum in Sulaymaniyah, Iraqi Kurdistan, is housed inside a former jail which was used by Saddam Hussein’s intelligence services from 1979 to 1991. During this time, many Kurds were imprisoned and died here. Today, visitors can view the former prison block which remains largely untouched. Inside the prison is a wood-panelled room which was previously used to torture prisoners. The first building in the museum complex features the ‘Hall of Mirrors’ which is lined with 182,000 broken shards of mirrors, representing the number of Kurds killed during the genocidal Anfal campaign, with 4,500 backlights, representing the Kurdish villages destroyed during the campaign. Another hall lists the names of all victims killed during the campaign. Amna Suraka 🇮🇶 ——————————- #TBT to this day a decade ago when I was standing in front of this bullet-ridden building. This was Amna Suraka (literally “Red Security”), which served as a prison for political prisoners from 1979 to 1991. Inside its walls, Kurdish dissidents were tortured, which is now vividly represented by mannequins. Saddam Hussein’s Baathist forces controlled the prison while his brutal, genocidal Al Anfal campaign unfolded against the Kurdish people. In 1991, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces (literally “Those Who Face Death”) liberated the prison after a 2 hour long assualt, leaving the building covered in bullet holes. You can see them in the second photo. Opened in 2003, the museum depicts the terrible acts that happened inside, as well of scenes from the nearby Halabja Massacre, where 5,000 Kurds were killed in an instant following a chemical gas attack by Saddam Hussein’s forces. The Hall of Mirrors in the last photo has a shard of glass for all 182,000 Kurds killed during the Al Anfal campaign, as well as a light for each of the 4,500 Kurdish villages destroyed during this time. Visiting was a very moving and powerful experience. Another mind blowing museum visit … From 1979-1991 during Saddam Hussein's rule in Iraq, Amna Suraka was the northern headquarters of the Iraqi Interior Ministry's intelligence agency. Many people were imprisoned, tortured, raped and killed there, particularly students and Kurdish nationalists. In 1991 the building was captured by Peshmerga forces during the Battle of Sulaymaniyah and in 2003 it was turned into a museum to document the many human rights abuses conducted under Saddam's rule and the thousands of lives lost in the continuing fight for Kurdish independence. The building has been preserved as it was, riddled with bullet holes, with harrowing prison cells and rusting tanks parked outside. The museum exhibits include a hall of 182,000 shards of broken mirror, commemorating the approximate number of Kurds killed during the Anfal genocide of 1988. On the ceiling 4,500 lights represent the number of Kurdish villages that were destroyed during the genocide. In 2013, Vice News reporter Orlando Crowcroft called Amna Suraka "the world's most depressing museum".
