Goddammit! The last 3-5 minutes of this film are debatably unnecessary but wow do they pack a sustaining punch. If there is anything that can be said with certainty about French film director Claire Denis, it’s that she doesn’t know how to make a boring movie. I say this based on the handful I’ve seen, including most recently Bastards, from 2013. This noirish mystery about deep dark secrets stars Vincent Lindon (Titane) as an oil tanker captain who moves back to help his sister with some family troubles after her husband dies by suicide. What makes Bastards so captivating is the way Denis holds the narrative so tightly, letting the truth out in tiny snapshots that leave you hungry to know what’s really going on. Just when you start to get the slightest bit confused, she hits you with the answer. This one burns slowly but the running time is only 100 minutes, which is conservative for a story so layered and complex, so I don’t think you require any extra patience to enjoy it (if I can even say that about a film this harrowing). A deeply unsettling movie with raw, powerful performances, that pulls you into a web of utter darkness where everyone is a bastard. Even the good ones. I had a premonition that I would like this movie. It’s Fulci after all and just look at that badass poster art. But my psychic powers unfortunately failed me, just like Fulci’s more subtle side. The Psychic (or Sette Note in Nero) is a 1977 Italian giallo movie by Lucio Fulci. The cold open is fantastic: a little school girl panics to flashes of her mother jumping off a cliff and being smashed to death. There’s even a great head-bashed-by-rock shot going down. Cut to the little school girl all grown up as Virginia (how American can you get?) Ducci, played by Jennifer O’neill, a reluctant clairvoyant who has married an uber rich Italian businessman. She starts having visions again and they seem to be connected to a murder (or a couple of them), and because she can’t escape her visions she gets all Jessica Fletcher and tries to solve those murders. Before they happen? After they happen? Who knows. That’s why they call it a mystery. Here’s where I have problems with Fulci’s movie. It’s subtle, like I said. Nuanced. There are no face melting, blood spurting, eye-gouging massacres. Just Jennifer O’neill being kind of annoying, stumbling and gasping through shadowy hallways and unlocking doors meant to stay closed. There are lots of red herrings here, like any good mystery, but there’s never a moment where you can’t see what’s really coming from a mile away. No psychic powers required. I can see some people really getting into this one. It’s just not what I prefer from one of the godfathers of gore. Favorite dialogue exchange in the movie, between Virginia and her husband, the rich Italian businessman Francesco Ducci, as they galavant across his sprawling grounds on horses together: Virginia - it must be so exhausting being married to a clairvoyant. Francesco - nonsense, Virginia. I’d love you even if you were a witch. I’m always skeptical about Hollywood horror movies. Especially Hollywood religious horror. But I heard the hype about Immaculate so I gave it a watch. I will say this... it does NOT, thankfully, have a Hollywood ending. AT ALL. And that I can appreciate, along with the intense, nail-biting 3rd act leading up to it driven primarily by Sydney Sweeney, who does a pretty great job as the devout Cecilia. It’s the rest I was just meh about. Mild spoiler alert... this is not really a religious “horror” movie. Yes, it all happens within the confines of a very creepy convent and there are a few jump scares and some unsettling imagery like red cloth-face sisters, but at no point did I feel this was full-on horror. Just my opinion. In some ways I’m glad because I don’t think I could stomach another possession/exorcism movie right now. This is not that at all because there are really no supernatural elements. It’s not nunsploitation either. It’s kind of a science vs religion thriller. Maybe that’s why people online have been getting upset about the film, calling it blasphemous, obscene and an affront to the Christian faith. Because in the end, religion doesn’t really come out a winner here. Which, honestly, is the right way to go. If you know nothing about this film, don’t expect it to play out the way the trailers make it seem. I didn’t get what I expected and I didn’t get what I wanted either but if subtle shades of Rosemary’s Baby mixed with The Da Vinci Code are enough to entertain you for 89 minutes go for it. Or just skip to the 3rd act and call it a blessed day. There's something really special about The Guest... I'm just not sure what it is. I'm finally getting around to Adam Wingard's 2014 film a decade later and wasn't sure what to expect. People love this movie, a post-modern thriller that looks like the '90s, sounds like the '80s and is entertaining as hell. I just didn't LOVE it like many others on Letterboxd. It's the story of David (Dan Stevens), a mysterious man who shows up at the home of one of his recently deceased military buddies. The family (father, mother, teenage son and 20-something daughter) welcome him in, he becomes immediately embedded and people start dying. I will admit the way The Guest plays out is perfect. It's a winner when it comes to pacing and overall aesthetic. The performances, especially by Stevens and Maika Monroe, are fun and satisfying. The bar scene alone makes it "worth" watching. But it's missing one little thing. Or maybe it's actually a big thing and I'm too dumb to see it. There is something that would make this a modern masterpiece. A thing that would make me LOVE The Guest like the others. Perhaps I need to watch it again to know. Or perhaps someone could tell me what I missed so that I can have the same appreciation for it I feel I need to have. In the meantime, it kind of lands in the middle for me. When it comes to unsettling stop motion animated films, The Wolf House might be chief among them. In every possible way a masterpiece, Cristobal Leon and Joaquin Cocina's 2018 Chilean nightmare masquerades as a propaganda film told from the POV of the leader of a German religious sect. At least that's what we get from the documentary-style live action segment that opens the movie. The simple stop motion fairy tale that follows tells us the story of Maria, a young woman who fled the religious sect and found refuge in a house in Chile owned by 2 pigs. Shit gets real pretty fast. This is a straight-up horror movie with super disturbing imagery that will haunt you. And I say "simple," but The Wolf House is anything but simple in its avant-guard expression. If you were impressed with Phil Tippett's Mad God, this film is certainly for you. Throughout my entire viewing, I was thinking "how did they do this"? Not the practical execution of the art form. More like my amazement as to how storytelling this visually robust comes together in the mind of its filmmakers. While I recognize the absolute genius of this film, I must say that it's a difficult one for me to be patient with. I think that's generally my response to animation of this kind but holy shit this thing is still so impressive. I don't have to say it's one of my favorite movies in order to recommend it. It also seems like the kind of movie people might want to watch on psychedelics. I'm thinking that would be very dangerous. I mean, it already feels that way sober. Leon and Cocina did the stop motion segment in Beau Is Afraid, which clearly demonstrated their talent and style. But The Wolf House is definitely their major twisted mark on the world and it's not going away anytime soon. At least from my brain it's not. Y'all know I have a thing for horror anthologies, right? The structure alone warms my cold black heart. I mean, if you don't like all the stories, there's always at least one stand out even in the most pedestrian of endeavors. So when it comes to Satanic Hispanics, it was a real joy to encounter so much more than just one good one. I don't know why I would have thought otherwise, given this sinister, gory, funny police station of horrific yarns teams up Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), Mike Mendez (Tales of Halloween) Demian Rugna (When Evil Lurks) and Gigi Saul Guerrero, among others, channeling their talents into a very entertaining Friday night on the couch if you subscribed to Shudder. The tagline for Satanic Hispanics is "5 Stories from 5 Latino AF Directors" and delivers the goods with a wraparound focused on a man called The Traveler (Efren Ramirez), who ends up in an interrogation room in a Texas police station when he's the sole survivor in a house of bloody, massacred Latinos. And boy does he have some stories to tell the 2 detectives assigned to the case. Not a masterpiece of cinema here but definitely a good time. You get your cult stuff, your weird stuff and your gross stuff and your funny stuff all in under 2 hours. Recommended. We are all waiting patiently to see what Alex Garland's Civil War has in store for us, as if we need this to confirm our worst fears that yes, our world is on the verge of this actually becoming a reality. But as you wait, maybe give Punishment Park a play if you haven't already. I think I knew about Peter Watkins' 1971 film for a long time now based on its cover photograph but I knew nothing of its contents. Here's all you need to know. It's a fake documentary that takes place in 1970. Because of all the political activism and peace protests surrounding the Vietnam War, Nixon finds some "state of emergency" loophole allowing him to round up people who might be a danger to America - so mostly students and intellectuals - and have them be tried on the spot by a community of appointed officials. Once sentenced they can choose to accept their prison time or choose to spend 3 days in Punishment Park, where they must travel 53 miles in the California desert without being caught by a bunch of bigoted, asshole cops and national guardsmen with guns. So yeah, it's a fake documentary. A fake documentary that is more relevant now than when it came out over 50 years ago. I can't even describe how terrifying this movie is to watch in 2024 with a presidential election looming. This could happen folks. It could happen tomorrow. Watch this movie. . ** Happy Birthday, Kurt Russell ** . Kurt Russell is one of the few men on planet Earth that I could legitimately sit down and write a genuine love letter to. Since I was just a child, not much younger than Kurt was when he signed a multi-picture deal with Walt Disney, I've idolized this man. I was introduced to and fell in love with films like The Thing, Escape from NY, and Big Trouble in Little China before I turned eight years old. My parents took me to see Tombstone in the theater in 1993. I was nine. . Alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, and Bruce Willis, Kurt Russell shares the distinction of being My Favorite Actor[s] of All Time!! I simply wouldn't want to go on living if you took their films away from me. If you told me I had to live out the rest of my life on a deserted island and only had the filmography of Mr. Russell to keep me company, I'd be perfectly content for the rest of my days!!! . I hate having to stop at just ten since he has starred in sooooo many great films over the years, but here are My Top Ten Favorite Films Starring the one-and-only, Kurt Russell: . 1. The Thing (1982) - 10/10 2. Forrest Gump (1994) - 10/10 3. Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - 10/10 4. Escape from New York (1981) - 10/10 5. Tombstone (1993) - 10/10 6. The Hateful Eight (2015) - 9.95/10 7. Vanilla Sky (2001) - 9.75/10 8. Death Proof (2007) - 9.75/10 9. Bone Tomahawk (2015) - 9.5/10 10. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood (2017) - 9.5/10 . . More than almost any other actor, Mr. Russell has SEVEN films that rank in My Top 250 All-Time Favorites. Six of which make My Top 75 of All-Time list, besting any other actor by three films!!! . Now you tell me, which Kurt Russell flick (or three) are you gonna watch today? . . For this list in its entirety, and many more just like it, please check out my #letterboxd account. To call They Shoot Horses, Don't They? disturbing might be an understatement. Sydney Pollack's 1969 film, based on the book by Horace McCoy, is about a dance marathon held during the Great Depression and the desperate people duped into being contestants. On the surface alone, the narrative alone is painful to watch. Couples vie for a prize of $1,500, subjecting themselves to inhumane and excruciating bodily endurance, public humiliation from a penny-throwing audience and the toxic, manipulative verbal battering of the emcee, Rocky Gravo (portrayed by Gig Young), the mastermind behind the entire scheme. There's a retired sailor (Red Buttons) trying to prove he can cheat death, a homeless kid who stumbles in from the beach (Michael Sarrazin), an emotionally fragile aspiring actress (Susannah York), an asshole aspiring actor, a poor farmer and his pregnant wife (Bruce Dern and Bonnie Bedelia), and a pissed off bitter woman with a mysterious backstory (Jane Fonda). All of them couple up and face off to see who will continue to dance and who will drop. It's a brutal competition that lasts not hours and not days but weeks, amidst perpetual physical and emotional breakdowns. They think it's a contest. Rocky calls it a show. But we all know what it really is and that's what makes They Shoot Horses, Don't They? such a gut punch. If you try to evaluate Gothic like it's a regular ol' film, it fails miserably. But it's not. It's a Ken Fucking Russell film. Through that lens, it's pretty fun. And how could it not be? You have one of the maestros of flamboyant excesses directing a story about the night Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was conceived. Of course, Gothic is nothing but lies but who cares. You're compelled to watch the intellectual joustings of Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Dr. John William Polidori and Mary Shelley (then Mary Godwin) shitting on the bourjois, taking mind-altering drugs, having orgies and most importantly... conjuring a real monster from their nightmares through a seance. Much delight is taken in embodying these historic roles by Gabriel Byrne, (baby) Julian Sands, Timothy Spall and Natasha Richardson as they prance around Byron's rococo estate on just one typical night in the summer of 1816. There is lots of Ken Russell weirdness and debauchery on display in Gothic and I am here for it. In some ways, it might be a little stuck in the 80s - it was released in 1986 and although it's a period piece, there is something lodged in the film that anchors it to the same year of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Top Gun and Labyrinth. Don't ask me to explain that. Maybe it's the Thomas Dolby score. Or maybe it's just a vibe I picked up on. But it doesn't bother me enough to totally dig this haunted literary funhouse of a film. You can think anything you want about Vicent Gallo, an artist that has been simultaneously maligned and revered over the years, but one thing is undeniable imo... the guy can make movies. His debut was a doozy. I saw Buffalo '66 at the theater when it came out in 1998. Then when it was released on home video and affordable enough for me to own the VHS tape, I bought it. But this was my first time revisiting the film in over 20 years and I can safely say it has aged just fine. There's not much to Buffalo '66 (often my favorite kind of movie). Just a meandering 24 hours in the life of Billy Brown (played by Gallo) as he is released from prison in Buffalo, NY and goes back to his old neighborhood with the intent to kill a kicker for the Buffalo Bills who supposedly blew the Super Bowl and ended up ruining Billy Brown's life in the process because of his over-extended bet with a violent bookie. First stop on his quest is a dance studio that he stops in to take a piss and ends up kidnapping Layla (Christina Ricci), forcing her to pretend to be his wife for a visit to see his mom and dad (Anjelica Huston and Ben Gazzara). The movie is set in the present day '90s but the aesthetic screams late '60s in every way. And even though it's grounded in a kind of stark realism you might expect from a John Cassavetes film, Gallo uses some interesting, new-waveish storytelling devices for giving us a backstory context. There are also a few moments, particularly at his parent's house, that conjure early Lynch and I swear Gallo stole the vibe of that donut shop scene from P.T. Anderson. Regardless, I love this movie. The music is great, especially with all the prog rock and particularly the use of "Heart of the Sunrise" by Yes in the climax. There were a lot of great movies coming at us around this time but I still think that Buffalo '66 is one of the best indie debuts of all time. All is as was. What's the best recipe for making a present day folk horror? Lift things from The Wicker Man of course. It also doesn't hurt to cast Ralph Ineson, best known as the deep, rumbling-voiced father in The VVitch. Both are present in Lord of Misrule, the film that William Brent Bell has delivered to us after directing the sequel to Orphan in 2022. Lord of Misrule concerns a rural English town who's local church congregation is led by a fairly progressive vicar (Tuppence Middleton). Is it strange that a Christian minister fully embraces the annual pagan festivals the town's foundation is built on? Perhaps. But I think it's one of the more interesting nuances added to the subgenre with this film. The subgenre I like to call: Creepy Towns with Creepy Customs Are Infiltrated by Outsiders and Shit Goes Sideways. More specifically in the case of Lord of Misrule: when the vicar's young daughter disappears at a harvest festival - of course it's a harvest festival - the scheming evil plot of the town begins to be revealed. Sound familiar? Yes, there is a lot of homage here but it is reverent and loving and crafted in such a way that it feels fresh. I was instantly compelled by this one and probably would have added it to my favorite horror films of 2023 if I had caught it in time. Highly recommended if you dig folk horror. Day 2 - Noah - a surprisingly interesting take on a biblical story. I was also surprised to see it sitting at 75% on RT. The acting was good and the visuals were pretty solid overall. The story as a whole was so-so and definitely rhe weak point. Pretty much the whole plot after they enter the ark feels like it could've been better fleshed out. Not likely to watch again, but I would recommend for anyone looking for a new take on a story they were told as a kid.
