When your kid tells you prom is in a little over a week, you rely on online shopping and your own sewing skills to put together a last minute prom fit. I made his vest from matte black satin and a basic polyester lining fabric. The tuxedo shirt, bow tie, jacket, and black kilt (yes, kilt!) were all bought and shipped in time. Presenting my last sewing FO before Abbie’s arrival 🪡 ♥️ Hardly the most exciting finished object photo I’ve ever posted, but my patchwork wall hanging I made last month is finally up in the bedroom! I love this sweet little piece of quilt art. If you were in my stories when I was working on it, you’ll have seen that I was super indecisive about whether or not to add the colourful HST border around the central quilt block—I’d initially envisioned a relatively understated piece, but I was worried it was looking a little too understated as I got to that stage. I’m so glad I went with this slightly kitschier design in the end! All the pieces are linen scraps from past clothing makes (and one poorly fitting RTW linen dress that I took apart for fabric a while back). The central printed patch is of course from @addiebeststudio , whose art I’ve just been obsessed with lately. another Patch Queen reminder! it’s not just scout patches! if your little (or big) ninja has moved up in belt status and gets a new gi, i can put those patches on too! i charge $2 per patch on the flat fronts and backs (anywhere i can reach with my machine) and a solid $20/hour fee on anything requiring handwork (like the sleeve)—with a minimum of one hour charged this new blue should look pretty sharp when he hits the dojo this week! #patches #patchqueen #shaolinamerican #amsewing

I finished a mini quilt for spring. It took longer because I decided to hand quilt it, felt discouraged with how it looked, returned after neglecting it for months, and finally pushed through to the end. I want to bind it in that dark purple, but before I do, I need your help. Should I add green embroidery quilting to the purple tear drops? Right now they're bonded with iron-on interfacing only. I've been very slowly working on a Ren Faire costume to get some practice before I start working on some other more historically accurate costumes. Inspired by @rachel.maksy, I bought a bed sheet from a thrift store, which had enough fabric for the "vest" and the skirt. The lining of the vest is made from linen from my stash. Today, I did the historical thing of hand sewing the stays into the vest lining, because I was afraid to machine sew so close to the plastic stays. Plus, hand sewing is the historically accurate way to insert stays anyway. The rest should go more quickly on my machine. #amsewing #renfaire #rennaisancefaire #historicalcostume #handsewing
Just in case any of you were labouring under the misapprehension that I am magically competent at sewing - may I present the great gathering disaster. Something is wrong with the distribution of my gathers. I have not yet worked out what, exactly. The only way I will find out is to unpin all the gathering I've done this far, check my notches and markings, and then start over 😭. I am - as always - grateful for teachable moments, and for the fact that I've now amassed sufficient sewing skills to let me know that A Mistake Has Been Made, and the knowledge that winging it inevitably means I will either have A LOT of unpicking to do later, or worse, I'll make something that I'll never wear. And am super sorry to report that the sewing machine is STILL not working 😭😭😭 very unamused having already been without it for a week. It worked perfectly when I got it back until I had to change the bobbin and then it reverted to weird tension which is why it went to the shop in the first place. Sigh. 🪡 I think I’ve caught the quilting bug… I had SO much fun putting together this wonky little quilted placemat over the course of a few weekends recently—honestly more sheer enjoyment than I’ve had with a sewing project for a long time. I love being someone who sews my own garments, but admittedly the process itself feels to me like work a lot of the time—not this! Rifling through my scrap boxes, pulling together fun colour combinations, practicing various methods of assembling the patchwork components, learning quilting terms like “sawtooth star” and “flying geese”… As a dedicated pattern follower when it comes to clothing, I found it refreshing that I could kind of just make whatever components I felt compelled to make in the moment, working in short chunks, and figure out how to assemble them at the end. I’ve collected tons of @addiebeststudio patches over the last year or two, and now I’m filled with ideas for how to use them. Next up, a “matching” placemat using an apple patch—hopefully a little less nonsensically assembled, though I do think the irregular piecing in this one has a certain charm—and maybe a little wall hanging to pair with a print by a different artist I bought us for Christmas. . . #quilting #sewistsofinstagram #patchwork #upcycledfabric #amsewing #memade
My first finished sewing project of 2024 is this glorious #srwaterfall blouse/minidress in the drapiest viscose linen blend from Blackbird Fabrics 🪡 This is my second Waterfall sew, but I admittedly was really dissatisfied with my first—the decision to shorten the sleeves was frankly a stupid one, and I’m realizing dark brown just isn’t my colour. Thankfully, I got it right this time! I mean, just look at these AMAZING full-length sleeves. I decided to make view B, technically a minidress, and while I’m not sure I’ll ever wear it that way other than around the house and perhaps the garden in warm weather, it’s absolutely *perfect* with leggings for maternity wear. Can highly recommend using a striped fabric with this pattern—it looks great and also makes the sleeve pleats much easier to sew and re-iron when necessary, since you have built-in guidelines. I will say that, much as I love this design, I found the pattern itself to be a bit lacking in some respects: the notches and other markings on the pattern pieces are weirdly hard to make out, and I’m still not sure I got the seam right where the bottom of the sleeve meets the bottom of the bodice. Oh, and I hate the original method for inserting the waistline elastic; this time around I just sewed a strip of bias tape to the inside of the waist seam as an elastic casing, which still isn’t ideal, but I like it better. This sew took me several weekends to finish, but that’s mainly because I’ve been so busy and tired lately (and I hate sewing in the evening, so it’s usually something I try to cram in during my weekends). That looks like an ironing board. It is! Actually it is an ironing board for doll clothes I have used for 30+ years. Perfect for pressing tiny, hard to reach seams. It fell apart this past November, and my husband fixed it for me even better than before. Everything is tightened and nothing wobbles.
