Pope.L, (@williampopel1) ( #popel),Times Square Crawl, performance, 1978. Pope.L crawling in Times Square, New York, in 1978. In a city beset with homelessness, it was an act of solidarity to lose his ‘verticality’, the artist said. Pope.L was born William Pope on June 28, 1955, in Newark to Lucille Lancaster and William Pope. Pope.L died unexpectedly on December 23, 2023 at his home in Chicago. He was 68. His grandmother Desma Lancaster, is credited with convincing him to become an artist at an early age, and throughout his relationship with her. Repost from The New Yorker: For Pope.L, crawling on the street is a way to direct our attention to a world out of view, specifically, to the world of anyone who has lost “verticality”—a term that he uses to describe the function of being wealthy enough, or healthy enough, to remain upright and in motion. This social geometry is Pope.L’s way of exploring inequalities that are often obscured by layers of complicity, guilt, inaction, and a sense of inevitability. It is easier, without a doubt, to look away, especially if verticality is all one has ever known. His first Times Square crawl, undertaken soon after graduating from Rutgers, was a visceral reaction to the circumstances of his aunt and uncle, who were living on the street. Pope.L wanted to produce a sting with his art that would last long after he’d dusted himself off. Speaking with the performance artist Martha Wilson, in 1996, he said, “We’d gotten used to people begging, and I was wondering, how can I renew this conflict? I don’t want to get used to seeing this. I wanted people to have this reminder.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTs5QkK20M4 https://art21.org/read/in-the-studio-pope-l/ https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2024/jan/15/pope-l-obituary https://www.popel.nyc/ #pope.l #conceptualart #performanceart #favorites #greatartistsofourtime #greatartistsoftheworld #multidisciplinary #uncompromising #artandarthistory #thenicestartistyouwillknow #whatwearemissing

Jim Denomie, (@jimdenomie), Chief, painting, oil on masonite, 2012, 18 x 14 inches. This piece is currently on view at Macalester College in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center on the first floor of the Art Commons. from the Mia (@artsmia): visit “The Lyrical Artwork of Jim Denomie”. Jim Denomie (Ojibwe, Lac Courte Oreilles Band, 1955–2022) drew inspiration from lived experiences, pop culture, Anishinaabe traditions, and American histories to tell compelling narratives that depict his experiences of being Native in America. Despite the emotional weight of his subject matter, the artist’s dry wit opened space for necessary conversations about the legacies of colonization and the nature of humanity. The exhibition examines Denomie’s creative process, tracing his ability to transform inspiration into monumental artworks. This exhibition surveys the artist’s singular vision and signature style over the second half of his career, from 2007 to 2022. VRC Student and Studio Art Minor, Taylor Maguire, shares her recent semester abroad in London with us. Find a snippet below and more on our department website! “I went to the Tate Modern for the first time with my new friend Natalie. Natalie and I took turns gawking at giant sculptures and funny video clips, but in between our silly bits of conversation the familiarity within the museum walls made me feel at home. I felt in my heart the feeling I had been craving since my arrival. I felt a comforting pair of hands wrap me up in a hug as I looked at pieces I had seen in my Art History Survey class from years before. As I continued to stroll I was exposed to new artists from different backgrounds, new mediums to express ideas, and new ways to express stories.” . . #semesterabroad #artandarthistory #pcartandarthistory #providencecollegeartandarthistory

Self portrait! I choose these photos because I think they are a good representation of who I am and my hobbies and interests. The first photo I included is one of my absolute favorites. I love the way the sun lights the trees up in the background. For my second,  third and last photos I decided to try and shoot them from a perspective that made it look like I didn't know I was being photographed. I did this because I really enjoy the way it looks kind of like seeing what they look like when no one is around. The fourth photo I included was a fun one that I liked because I like how relaxed I look. I decided to put them all in black and white because I love the way the light and dark contrast, especially in the first photo.  #selfportrait #albioncollegeonline23 #albioncollege #artandarthistory

DVSS invites you to Leena Manimekalai's artist talk on Thursday September 28th from 12:30pm-1:30pm in the Annie Smith Arts Centre Mezzanine at Sheridan College! This talk is free and all are welcome. Leena Manimekalai is a leading Tamil poet and a multiple-award-winning, intersectional, queer feminist filmmaker. Manimekalai’s voice is distinct, as she is a 'genre no bar' artist. Her repertoire of films, with impressive exhibition records, includes the acclaimed ‘Maadathy-an unfairy tale’ (Pure fiction), ‘the Sengadal-the Dead sea’ (Cinema Verité), ‘White Van Stores’ (Feature Documentary), ‘Is it too much to ask’ (Mockumentary), ‘Goddesses’ (Short Documentary) and ‘My Mirror is the Door’ (Cine Poem). Manimekalai is an interventionist and her forte is participatory filmmaking. Her tryst with censorship, both constitutional and extra constitutional, as a brown queer female body, as a poet and as a politically unapologetic filmmaker is a metanarrative in her journey as an Artist. Manimekalai has an MFA in Film from York University as a GFAD Fellow and has been chosen as a BAFTA India Breakthrough Talent for the year 2022-23. She is currently finishing her tenure as the 'Artist in Residence' at Centre for South Asian Critical Humanities at UTM - Jackman Humanities Institute at UofT-South Asian Visual Art Centre (SAVAC) and as the 'Inaugural Artist in Residence’ at the Centre for Free Expression, Toronto Metropolitan University. #ArtAndArtHistory #DVS #UTM #LeenaManimekalai #ArtistTalk #SheridanCollege @dvsutm @utm.dvsss
