They live in a world overflowing with information, constantly awake. One day, anomalous zones of obscure origin appear in their restless realm. A living creature, once in this zone, falls asleep. Those beings, having experienced dreams, woke up to tell those who have never slept about the incredible bliss of the enveloping emptiness and the absence of information noise, about the vacuum. In an oversaturated world, the idea of sleep is captivating. It spreads quickly and becomes a new religion, the Cult of Slumber. Pilgrims and tourists seeking epiphany are drawn to such anomalous zones. And yet, the behavior of such zones is unpredictable and the effect is unique for everyone. For some, nothing ever happens. Another one of the captivating works of Sicilian artist Nicola Pucci currently on show in the gallery as part of the exhibit CLASH! Palermo-born Pucci creates a disorienting sense of colliding worlds with his original and startling oil paintings, in which movement and speed are central elements. By juxtaposing contrasting or 'clashing' subjects and situations, the artist presents the viewer with an improbable image which results in a temporal and visual short circuit. Born in Palermo in 1966, Nicola Pucci boasts a masterly technique which has won the attention of important figures in the art world including America’s Larry Gagosian and Carlo Bilotti, the late Florida-based international cosmetics buyer and art collector. Pucci has exhibited in Italy, the USA, England, France and South Korea and held high-profile solo shows in museum spaces such as Palermo’s Villa Zito (2020), Spoleto’s contemporary art museum Palazzo Collicola and Rome’s Carlo Bilotti Museum. His work is to be found in the permanent collections of the Carlo Bilotti Museum and the Sicily Museum of Contemporary Art (MacS) in Catania, as well as the private Fendi, Benetton and Gagosian collections. Pucci works largely from photographs, often combining elements from different sources within a single painting. While drawing upon various influences including Surrealism and the art of Francis Bacon, Pucci nonetheless stands apart from defined contemporary trends or movements. #SENZATEMPO Very last weeks to discover ‘SENZA TEMPO (Timeless)’ in Rome! Portrait soon becomes a tool to investigate and represent contemporary society, as seen in Vanessa Beecroft’s work, to prompt the viewer in relation to the artwork, as in ‘Partitura in Nero-E’ by Michelangelo Pistoletto, or to explore the idea of painting itself, as in ‘Luce nella luce’ by Giacomo Balla. Andy Warhol aimed at realizing a “portrait of society” between 1968 and 1987. His subjects were friends, patrons, artists, and celebrities whom he transformed into icons. In 1985, during a trip to Europe, he met Reimer Claussen, a famous and brilliant stylist, whom he would then portray the year after. “The method Andy applied for a portrait was quite elaborate. He would begin by sitting the subject and taking about 60 pictures of him/her with his Polaroid [...]. He would choose an image, then he would cut around it and put makeup on it, in order to make the subject look as attractive as possible: usually, he would stretch their necks, make their noses smaller, make their lips bigger, or lighten their skin. In other words, he did to others what he wanted others to do to him.” (P. Hackett, Andy Warhol Diaries, 2022.)
