We concluded my UG class (ART410) with a hurrah, ending the (Spring/even) semester last week! My other course (ART703: STUDIO ART) is also done! As usual, this semester had one of the most hectic class routines paired with daily lectures (of two courses) with rich content on cinema and visual arts. Like my regular practice, this time, too, there was no co-teaching, no load sharing with any other faculty/tutor, no online/flipped mode of class, just all regular in-person lectures (I didn’t even share any pre-recorded lectures/tutorials). And guess what, our students like it too! The End-Semester exams for both courses are still scheduled for this week. Though the paper checking, paper showing, and grading will start, the primary workload is a little lighter now! When we started our semester/class in January’24, it was winter, and now it’s the beginning of a long, racking summer! Here are a few peeks of my UG class (the first 5 shots were from the last class, while the 6th one was from the first class held in JAN’24). The class size is 112 (with a few PostGrad and some auditing students). Despite the temperature, approximately 95% of students attended the last class and posed for a group photo! For many, it was literally their "last class," as they will get their degrees in the next convocation scheduled in June'24! Hopefully, we all learned a lot from this course and made a few unforgettable memories! All picks were taken by my gifted PhD students, Ms. Gargi Ghosh and Ms. Jayanti Mandi. All I need to say is, I didn’t enjoy the trailer at all. It lacks the hype and drama. There is no original concept or something innovative tried. Why is it everytime we need to turn actors into superheroes. Why always the same thing like cars blowing up and actors flying in the air always. There has to be a limit to all this. Although the actors have done a pretty good job with the stunts, but it lacks is emotion, motive and adrenaline. It is mostly a copy of terminator and Logan. Now, what is the nuance brought here. Nothing much. You have a large scale set that’s fine. But, what’s the point when it doesn’t have a narrative purpose. Does a film need to be about heroes and big action set pieces? Do we need to show them@muscular always. “Inglourious Basterds” is a film I’ve watched approximately five times, each viewing aimed at appreciating Quentin Tarantino’s brilliance as a director. It’s a movie that, in many ways, shouldn’t work, yet Tarantino’s touch makes it not only function but excel. The cinematography and attention to detail are nothing short of excellent. Christoph Waltz, arguably one of the greatest actors of all time, delivers an outstanding performance that is pivotal to the movie’s success. Without him, the film wouldn’t have the same impact. Brad Pitt also delivers a noteworthy performance as Lieutenant Aldo. As Aldo famously says at the end, “I think this just might be my masterpiece,” and I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment.
