This film is very thought provoking, intellectually stimulating and wrestles with faith and human nature, but it is very slow. The pacing is intentional as Tarkovsky uses long single takes and drawn out scenes. Three characters make their way through an area called “the Zone” to a place called “the Room” which supposedly grants the deepest desire of anyone who enters. The story doesn’t focus on the destination itself but the internal journey each character has on the way. Tarkovsky was a devout Orthodox Christian and the film has overt Christian themes. In spite of the intentionality it takes to watch this film, I recommend it. It is a work of art. I’ll leave you with a quote of one of the characters. “May everything come true. May they believe. And may they laugh at their passions. For what they call passion is not really the energy of the soul, but merely friction between the soul and the outside world. But, above all, may they believe in themselves and become as helpless as children. For softness is great and strength is worthless. When a man is born, he is soft and pliable. When he dies, he is strong and hard. When a tree grows, it is soft and pliable. But when it’s dry and hard, it dies. Hardness and strength are death’s companions. Flexibility and softness are the embodiment of life. Skoma's, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. Arrived late afternoon in the city. Visited this legendary seafood restaurant (although we didn't know this till we got here - it's aura glowed as did the setting sun). It paved the way for four magnificent days exploring the city and surroundings. Just sorry we didn't get to visit the Norwegian Church. Rob had a lovely chat with the pastor sitting on the table adjacent who was dining with his mother. They both shared a love of Andrei Tarkovsky films and whiled a way a good hour talking about avant garde cinema. I had the pleasure of staring at this young diner, opposite. (middle image).
