Ivan the Terrible, Part One (Sergei Eisenstein, 1944). It's been many years since I've seen this. These photos I found online make me want to see it again. Ivan the Terrible comes in two parts though the second part was condemned by Stalin and not released until after his death. The film tells the story of the great monarch who unified Russia under his rule ("terrible" is how Ivan is remembered in the west, but the Russian word means something more like formidable or awe-inspiring). The photography is sensational as is the montage (Eisenstein practically invented editing as an artistic practice with the Odessa Steps sequence in Battleship Potemkin, 1925). And the story is a sweeping but nuanced and insightful one of power and power corrupted. As a young man, at a time when film was fighting to be recognized as art, Eisenstein was foundational to the understanding of film history. I believe he is much forgotten in these days of Rotten Tomatoes and box office primacy.) #ivantheterrible #sergeieisenstein #russianfilm #russiancinema #sovietcinema #sovietfilm #classicfilm #classicmovies #oldmovies #wehadfacesthen

Presenting you, Innokenty Smoktunovsky as Yuri Detochkin from "Beware of the Car" (1966) vs. Lord Hamlet from "Hamlet" (1964)! Two of my favorite roles of his, had the urge to draw him so bad because he's way too spectacular. It's like the sun and moon at the same time 😂 . . . . . . . #artwork #fanart #myartwork #digitalart #digitalpainting #digitalillustration #artistsofig #sovietfilm #sovietcinema #sovietactors #innokentysmoktunovsky #bewareofthecar #watchoutfortheautomobile #eldarryazanov #hamlet #hamlet1964 #grigorikozintsev #williamshakespeare #hamletfanart #characterdesign

One of the very few Soviet Armenian cinemas left untouched. Still had posters and cinema reels intact in the projector room. Only problem was to enter you had to fit through the small projector port hole and I’m a big lad so it wasn’t easy. Mirror (1975) directed by Andrei Tarkovsky

4/20/2024, 12:35:21 AM

A captivating film still from the exceptional and loosely autobiographical 1975 Soviet drama masterpiece ‘Зеркало’ (‘Mirror’), directed and written by the renowned Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky (4 April 1932 – 29 December 1986). This particular shot pays visual homage to the painting ‘Jagers in de sneeuw’ (‘The Hunters in the Snow’) by the Dutch Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel de Oude (Pieter Bruegel the Elder, c. 1525–1530 – 9 September 1569), as depicted in the second image. Bruegel's work left a profound impact on Tarkovsky, influencing his artistic vision significantly. Rather than a mere genre art portrayal of a group of hunters returning home after an unsuccessful expedition with their dogs (they only bring home a fox), to me, Bruegel's painting evokes a profound sense of winter's starkness, subtly hinting at the quiet despair lurking beneath the surface of seemingly tranquil scenes. So, in my opinion, in Tarkovsky's film with its nonlinear narrative, this scene serves as a powerful metaphor for the passage of time, the cyclical nature of life, and the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world. It becomes a symbol of nostalgia, introspection, and the complexities of memory, according to the narrator (who is not be seen in the film), the protagonist Aleksei, and Tarkovsky himself. . . . . . . #andreitarkovsky #зеркало #mirror #sovietcinema #pieterbruegel #pieterbruegeltheelder #bruegel #jagersindesneeuw #huntersinthesnow #dutchrenaissance #hommage #genreart #avantgardecinema #winter #methaphorical #nature #snow #nostalgia #introspection

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965) - dir. Sergei Parajanov The Ukrainian film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” captivated audiences and critics alike during the 1964 film festival circuit, accumulating a slew of prestigious awards. Yet, its enduring significance lies in its portrayal of director Sergei Parajanov’s artistic brilliance juxtaposed against the repressive Soviet regime’s stifling grip on creativity. Parajanov’s cinematic masterpiece delves into the rich tapestry of regional identity amidst the Carpathian Mountains, highlighting the resilience of its people amidst the backdrop of Soviet nationalism. Through the poignant tale of Ivan’s tragic loss and futile quest for solace, the film serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring struggle for artistic freedom and the human spirit’s indomitable resilience in the face of oppression.

Without a doubt the most impressive silent sci-fi movie I’ve seen. Vasily Zhuravlyov‘s Cosmic Journey, released in 1936 and set in the distant future of 1946, is a pretty straightforward trip to the moon-kinda movie, but technically superior to most other productions of the time. „A masterpiece gives form to the ideals of the particular epoch in which we live. Ideals can never be made immediately accessible to everyone. To be able to approach them, one must grow and develop spiritually. If the dialectical tension between the spiritual level of the masses and the ideals to which the artist bears witness disappears, it would simply mean that art had completely lost its purpose and function.” Andrei Tarkovsky 🎂🌟🌟 #bornonthisday #filmmaker #screenwriter #sovietcinema #worldcinema #solaris #stalker #nostalghia #voyageintime #acinemaprayer #themirror #andreitarkovsky

🎬 Letyat zhuravli (The Cranes Are Flying) (Sovyetler Birliği, 1957) Yönetmen: Mikhail Kalatozov Stalin döneminde neredeyse biten Sovyet sinemasının geri dönüşünü müjdeleyen “Leylekler Uçarken” her yönüyle olağanüstü bir dram filmi. Boris’in merdivenlerden çıktığı sahne ve Veronika’nın koştuğu sahneler, her sinemaseverin mutlaka izlemesi gereken ders niteliğinde çekimler olmuş. #sinema #film #cinema #movie #eskifilmler #oldmovies #1950s #sovyetsineması #sovietcinema #russiancinema #dram #drama #savaşfilmleri #warmovies #letyatzhuravli #thecranesareflying #mikhailkalatozov #tatyanasamoylova #alekseybatalov #sergeyurusevsky

I want to write about the Soviet film Love and Lies (another translation is Could One Imagine, the original name is Vam i Ne Snilos) It happens that a full acquaintance with some piece of art takes decades. That's exactly my case. About 20 years ago, when I was a teenager, I heard the song from the film. I watched the film about 6 years ago. In last year I read the novel on which the film is based. And just on these days I read the poem by Indian poet Tagore, which was later translated by the poetess Adelina Adalis. This translation is the basis of the song that I heard so long ago. The Soviet melodrama Love and Lies, directed by Ilya Frez in 1981, was based on the novel of the same name by Galina Shcherbakova. The film was immediately recognized as a masterpiece, received an award as the best film of the year, and found a response in the hearts of many viewers. In one of the comments on IMDb, I read that people usually watch this film either with tears on their eyes or at least with a huge lump coming to their throat. I can just agree. Galina Shcherbakova, the author of several literary works, wrote a short story about the love of two Soviet teenagers, which encounters the incomprehension of adults - each of whom interprets the events happening based on their own judgement. The story ends tragically, unlike the movie with a happy ending - director admitted in an interview that he lacked the courage to leave the audience with such a tragic ending. Special attention deserves the title song -The Last Poem, performed by Otieva. The music was written by Alexei Rybnikov, and the lyrics is a translation by the Soviet poetess Adelina Adalis of the original poem of Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore, who received Nobel Prize in 1913, wrote several novels and numerous novellas, among which are Chaturanga and The Last Poem - a collection of letters exchanged between lovers who cannot be together due to societal prejudices. Highly recommend watching the film, listening to the song, and reading both Galina Shcherbakova's novel and Rabindranath Tagore's poem - at any age. LETTER NEVER SENT Back in 2021, I watched Mikhail Kalatozov’s Soy Cuba and really enjoyed it, and after putting off the rest of his equally acclaimed and influential work for no discernible reason, I finally saw my second film of his. On its own, Letter Never Sent was a pretty good adventure drama that was made consistently compelling thanks to its riveting characters, poetic dialogue, and expressive performances, all of which made the movie’s dramatic shift towards being a grueling survival film more impactful in the long run. What elevated Letter Never Sent to truly great status for me, though, was its mind-boggling and entirely dizzying visual language, as Kalatozov’s impressionistic close-ups, kinetic handheld tracking shots, and dreamlike editing that heavily utilized crossfades and multiple exposures turned the film into a truly dazzling experience while also setting the groundwork for a lot of the techniques that Kalatozov would later expand on in Soy Cuba. Alongside the straightforward man-versus-nature setup, the simple plot of Letter Never Sent also allows it to explore the film’s poignant themes of love and discovery, with Konstantin Sabinin’s heartfelt letters to his wife being one of the movie’s most prominent motifs. My only real gripe with Letter Never Sent would can be found in its score, because while it isn’t bad by any means, Nikolai Kryukov’s music can get a bit overbearing at times, and that ends up slightly taking away from the impact of some of the film’s more emotional moments. Despite that, Letter Never Sent was still a great movie that owes a lot to its consistently brilliant visuals that were way ahead of what anyone was doing at the time, and since I’ve still never seen The Cranes Are Flying after all these years, this is probably a sign for me to finally get around to it. OVERALL RATING: 8/10 #movies #1960s #sovietunion #sovietcinema #mikhailkalatozov #innokentiysmoktunovksy #tatyanasamoylova #vasiliylivanov #evgeniyurbanskiy #letterneversent #letterneversent1960

Today, I have seen one of the most underrated movies that I have ever seen. It’s called Nostalghia. This Russian Italian Movie is about a man who visits Italy to investigate a Russian composer who lived there. He and his interpreter visits parts of Italy, meets a strange fellow and has visions during his journey. Nostalghia may not have been the best work from Andrei Tarkovsky, but he delivers amazing camera shots, unique performances and a smooth touch of editing. I’ll give this movie an 8/10. #movie #movienight #nostalgia #andreitarkovsky #sovietunion #sovietcinema

#belatarr #damnation #hungariancinema #hungarianfilm #hungarianmovie #bluray #blurays #bluraycollector #blurayaddict #blurayjunkie #blurayboxset #blurayfanatic #bluraylover #arthousemovie #arthouse #artofcinema #moviegram #sovietcinema #tarkovski #andreitarkovsky #blurayshelf @carlotta.films

. . . . . . . . . . #cinefeel #cinefeelpodcast #greekpodcast #greekpodcaster #sovietcinema #svilova #documentary #manwithmoviecamera #womenincinema

So here’s an overly delayed sharing of the documentation from the install at Xpace Cultural Centre (September 15 - November 15, 2023). Documentations by Polina Teif, Philip Ocampo, Kalidas Unnikrishnan and Maria Mihyun Kim. Thank you for capturing some of the different iterations 🌟 Now also up on my website woot! http://www.aydanhasanova.com/ondan-bundan-xpace And thank you to anyone who dropped by, passed through, traveled for, inquired about and still shares this installation on 💛 #installationart #sovietcinema #sovietazerbaijan
