DRYING FLOWERS 🤍🍃 After looking at a plant identification app, I found that this beautiful wild flower is Queen Ann's Lace. I looked up ways to dry it because I want it to last. Just hanging them upside down, they tend to curl like a reverse umbrella. So, I found another idea online to dry them so they will lay flat and it's using Mason jars. The jars have a double purpose...grabbing just the edges so they will lay flat and keeping the stems upright so they dry straight. Some I want to curl up so I'll just dry those by hanging them upside down. I read that they take 2 to 3 weeks to dry so I will move these to a spot where we won't be bothering them. This is an experiment. I hope it works!

Lemongrass is one of the easiest herbs to grow. And it doesn't need special soil nor much care like most plants. As long as it's watered daily and given occasional compost and fertilizer, the plant will grow well and big. However in order to ensure that it remains healthy and bushy, lemongrass needs to be harvested often, that is the bush needs to be trimmed and replanted so that the roots will have the space to grow. It's easy maintenance really. We have several bushes in the garden grown from a few lemongrass stalks that we bought from the market few months ago. Today marks a week since the implementation of second MCO in Malaysia. Although it's slightly different this time only a few states are under lockdown, it still brings some sense of discomfort and anxiety especially when our country's infection rate is increasing. All around the world there are more disturbing and depressing news lately and quite honestly affect us psychologically. For us it's necessary to take sometime off the grid and find the 'inner peace' to stay centred. In the last few weeks, we've work the garden more. We've cleared all our raised beds, put in fresh compost, topped up with new mixed potting soil and sowed new vegetable seeds. We're growing different vegetable varieties this time. So far our Kailan, Jagung Susu, Baby Cucumber, Kacang Botol, Petola Pulut, Cili Kampung, Cili Padi and Tomatoes are growing nicely. On top of that there's also Tatsoi, Rocket salad, potatoes, big red onion, brocolli, Choy Sum and more cabbage. We notice most carrots being sold in our markets are all imported either from Australia or China. Carrots are not commonly grown commercially in Malaysia because the weather is not suitable for it. Anyways thanks to the constant pictures of fellow gardeners harvesting their carrots on IG we were tempted to try to grow it. It's been several days and we're seeing tiny shoots from the 🥕🥕 seeds. While the Western countries are bracing the cold winter season, Malaysia on the other hand is going through rough monsoon season with some parts of the country inundated in flood. After depressing watermelon discovery yesterday, our spirits took an uplifting jolt upon finding tiny kacang buncis or French beans appearing on the vines. This is our first growing the beans so we're quite apprehensive about it. Well there's no standard manual in gardening that can provide foolproof success (our watermelon failure was a good proof) so one needs to be patient learning from the environment. Every environment is different; the soil, the weather and even the troubling pests (for us it's definitely the wild monkeys). Experience definitely makes gardening easier. Harvested our first Tatsoi. Not sure if it's the best time but we think it's about ready because some of the leaves have turned yellow. Our Tatsoi might be tiny compared to other gardeners. Nevertheless we're really grateful to be able to grow it till harvest. It will be a simple dish, stir-fry Tatsoi with garlic. While some seeds like Long Beans, Bak Choy, Okra, Tatsoi, Kangkung, Sawi Bunga and Lettuce Salad can easily germinated within weeks, vegetables like Kailan, cabbage and heirloom red chilli take slightly longer time to germinate. We took the high road where we are basically learning everything from scratch. It's a bit of luffa madness going on at the moment. Suddenly there's a spurt of growth that we think due to combination of organic soil builders and fertilizers we are currently experimenting. We recently introduced bokashi goats manure to our vegetable plants on top of maintaining usual EM, homemade composts (both garden compost and bokashi compost), neem cake tea, wood vinegar and (bokashi) leachate. Yeah it's definitely organic fertilizer overloads! Our lonesome watermelon from a single plant that's left. From our own observations the watermelon plant is easily susceptible to over-watering and intense high heat. Hence in order to ensure it has the chance to survive watermelon is best cultivated between February to September when the Malaysian weather experiences less rainfalls (so we made a mistake for growing it during the monsoon season!) And the root system is fairly sensitive too because we lost a plant due to small damage to the vines while clearing up the area. Well now we know why the watermelon is generally pricey. The sheer amount of care that goes into the cultivation is enormous especially if the season/ weather is not on your side. And let's not start discussing about monkey problems and garden pests!! For novice gardener like us, growing vegetables from seeds can sometimes be intimidating especially when we are trying new 'cultured' vegetables much like Tatsoi. We consider it a fussy vegetable to grow because it doesn't do quite well in tropical weather like Malaysia with plenty of sunshine and rain. We lost track of how many times we had to change the shade protection; from plastic sheeting to cover the vegetables against incessant rains, sunshade from the extreme sunlight and even insect netting against annoying pests. After all the TLC we hope it was worth it growing Tatsoi. It is always a joy walking through the vegetable garden a real treat for the eyes and nose. We harvested our very first cabbage few days ago. Unfortunately we were not able to taste it because it was snapped up by a customer instantly when she found out we were going to harvest it 😅 Well we still have a few more cabbage plants so we're definitely saving some for ourselves. We were out of sorts in the last few weeks and the vegetable garden was pretty much neglected during those times. It took such a long time for the Catnip to germinate, probably about eight weeks or so. Not sure if that's normal but we were quite exasperated in the beginning. The waiting was definitely gnawing on our conscience, as we were contemplating to just throw away the seeds and start again. Alas the waiting and our daily "plant motivational counselling" paid off. The sun is out after many days of nonstop rain. We couldn't do anything much in the garden in the last few days so it was great to finally be able to tend the garden. It seems the heavy rainfalls have affected some vegetable seedlings particularly the cabbage, broccoli and French beans which the leaves have somewhat wilted and turned yellow. On the brighter side we saw some brinjal bearing small fruits. Oh well at this juncture Nature is in total control of our vegetable garden. Feeling euphoric because the Peppermint plant finally showing sign of life. This is actually our 5th attempt at growing the herb using the fresh mint that we bought from the market. When all previous attempts failed miserably, this time it took several weeks and loads of EM and compost to encourage the mint to grow 😅. We're truly happy it didn't give up! Just when we thought we fail growing the garlic, suddenly there are young garlic scapes appearing! This is our first growing garlic. Maintaining Bokashi bin is not difficult. We collect the leachate (juice collected from the fermentation process) daily and use it to fertilize our plants. What's amazing about Bokashi composting is that you can compost everything including dairy and meat wastes which are banned from traditional composting. And the composting process is cut almost by half which takes between 10 to 14 days to complete the composting process after the bin is full. Moreover the byproduct, the leachate can be used as natural fertilizer!
