Standing at 298.5 feet (91 meters) it is the tallest Belfry in Belgium. Gulden Draak Classic (10,5% alc.) van Brouwerij Van Steenberghe in Ertvelde werd in 1998 bekroond door het American Tasting Institute als beste bier ter wereld. Het bier is genoemd naar het vergulde beeld op de top van het Gentse Belfort. Volgens de legende sierde de vergulde draak de voorsteven van het schip waarmee de Noorse koning Sigurd Magnusson in 1111 op kruistocht voer. De krijger schonk het beeld aan de keizer van Constantinopel om het op de koepel van de Aya Sophia te plaatsen. Een kleine honderd jaar later liet de Vlaamse graaf Boudewijn IX het pronkstuk overbrengen naar de Vlaamse gewesten waar de Noorse draak uiteindelijk in handen viel van de Bruggelingen. Na de slag op het Beverhoutsveld in 1382 haalden de Gentenaars de draak als oorlogsbuit binnen en plaatsten die op het Belfort. Gulden Draak is te vergelijken met een donkere tripel of een barley wine. Je proeft een complexe smaak van karamel, koffie, gedroogd fruit en gebrande mout. 20 April 2020 Update from A Locked Down Ghent - First the bad news: 230 new deaths were reported, a majority in care homes (154) and another 76 confirmed cases in hospital. This takes the total death toll to 5,683,with over half of the deaths being reported in care homes. The good news is that with 265 patients taken to hospital and 409 people being discharged the number of corona patients in hospitals dips below 5,000 to reach a three-week low. Therefore, we remain hopeful that the lockdown measures will be lifted and that life will return to somewhat normal conditions as of 3 May. The key question will now become how much of our economy was destroyed in the process of managing the Covid-19 outbreak and how easily can we get back to that new normal. The 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent is one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre of Ghent, Belgium, the other two belonging to Saint Bavo Cathedral and Saint Nicholas' Church. Its height makes it the tallest belfry in Belgium. The belfry of Ghent, together with its attached buildings, belongs to the set of belfries of Belgium and Franceinscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Construction of the tower began in 1313 after a design by master mason Jan van Haelst. His plans are still preserved in the Ghent City Museum. After continuing intermittently through wars, plagues and political turmoil, the work reached completion in 1380. It was near the end of this period that the gilded dragon, brought from Bruges, assumed its place atop the tower. The uppermost parts of the building have been rebuilt several times, in part to accommodate the growing number of bells. Through the centuries, the belfry served not only as a bell tower to announce the time and various warnings, but also as a fortified watchtower and the place where the documents evidencing the municipal privileges were kept. The bells in the belfry originally only served a religious purpose. Gradually the bells got a secular role by regulating daily life in the growing medieval city. The alarm bell Roland (an Anglicization of the Dutch name Roeland), which was installed in the Belfry in 1325, was also used as the hourly bell from 1378 onwards. The hourly chime was preceded by warning signals on three smaller bells with various tones. This was the predecessor of the carillon. The carillon was built by the famous bellfounders Pieter and François Hemony in the 17th century and has a total weight of 30 tons. The carillon gradually expanded to 53 bells after its restoration in 1982. In 1993 another bell, called Robert, with a clear sound was added to the carillon. The primary bell in the tower, called Roland, was also used to warn the citizens of Ghent of an approaching enemy or a battle won.[4] After subduing Ghent, which had risen up against him, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor ordered the removal of Roland.
