La Friday’s Song de hoy viene teatrera, me apetecía recomendaros la última obra que dirige nuestro amigo Paco Mir, “Esperant Mr. Bojangles”, basada en la exitosa novela de Olivier Bourdeaut. “Esperant Mr. Bojangles”, es una “dramedia” (tragicomedia) protagonizada por Sílvia Abril, Lluís Villanueva y Lua Amat. Un retrato de una locura maravillosa, que habla sobre esa clase de personas disparatadas, extravagantes y únicas, pero terriblemente frágiles, que como un huracán te arrastra en su locura y en su hermosa felicidad. La canción “Mr. Bojangles” es el leitmotiv musical de la función. Paco se apoya en la versión que interpreta Nina Simone, la gran sacerdotisa del soul, para entretejer toda la trama. Nosotros nos centraremos en el tema original, compuesto e interpretado por Jerry Jeff Walker en el año 1968. En 1965, Jerry Jeff Walker pasó una noche en un calabozo de Nueva Orleans por intoxicación etílica. Allí conoció a un vagabundo y artista callejero que se hacía llamar Mr. Bojangles, utilizaba este seudónimo para ocultar su verdadera identidad a la policía. Mr. Bojangles había tomado prestado el nombre del actor y bailarín de claqué Bill “Bojangles” Robinson (1878-1949). Aquella noche, nuestro protagonista y Mr. Bojangles disertaron sobre el sentido de la vida, y este último acabó marcándose unos pasos de claqué para amenizar la velada carcelaria. ✨One of the first black women to leave her mark on the dance world, Josephine Baker’s legacy is synonymous with sensuality, bravery and uninhibited passion. ✨Her free and bold behavior led her to perform across the country with The Jones Family Band and The Dixie Steppers in 1919. By the time she sashayed onto a Paris stage during the 1920s, she was confident in her abilities and performed with a comic, yet sensual appeal that took Europe by storm. ✨Baker went on to perform and choreograph for 50 years in Europe. Although racism in the States often restricted her from gaining the same renown at home as she did abroad, Baker fought segregation through organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The organization actually named May 20 “Josephine Baker Day” in honor of her efforts. ✨In her lifetime, it is said she received approximately 1,500 marriage proposals and countless gifts from admirers, including luxury cars. On the day of her funeral, more than 20,000 people crowded the streets of Paris to watch the procession on its way to the church. On the fourth day of Art-mas, Richmond, Virgin-ia: Bojangles Statue, St. John's Church, (the) State Capitol and Chihuly at the VMFA. A statue of Richmond native, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson is located at a triangle park at the intersection of Leigh Street and Chamberlyne Avenue in Richmond's Jackson Ward. When the city refused to put a street light at the dangerous intersection in the black neighborhood, Mr. Robinson paid for it out of his own pocket. Bojangles is probably most well known for the series of films he did with Shirley Temple. Yet as I was taking these photos I realized it may very well be sung by not Shirley Temple but The Golden Children's Chorus. I'll spin it at home tonite to check but don't check back yourself for any updates. The song itself was featured in the 1935 film 'The Littlest Rebel' starring Shirley & Bill (Bojangles) Robinson. The slingshot scene was written into the movie after the director learned of Temple's natural ability to use the one. She was perfectly on target needing only 1 take for the scene. Jedną z ciekawszych informacji, którą w ostatnim czasie przeczytałam, była ta o nałożeniu podatku, który spowodował w Stanach zamknięcie wielu sal tanecznych po II wś. Spowodowało to, że dla swingowych big bandów w większych lokalach nie było już miejsca, a w konsekwencji powstanie mniejszych zespołów jazzowych, grających bebop, styl w muzyce jazzowej, który - w przeciwieństwie do swingu - nie był stylem szczególnie wdzięcznym do tańca. A na pewno nie do tańczenia w dotychczas znanej formie. Gdy zmarł Bill Bojangles Robinson, a telewizja pojawiła się w amerykańskich domach, w podobnym czasie zaczęła spadać popularność stepowania. Wielu tap dancerów występowało wraz z big bandami, więc część z nich uchowała się jeszcze przy kontynuującej działalność orkiestrze Duke’a Ellingtona. Pozostali szukali pracy, często chwytając się czegokolwiek, niezwiązanego z branżą artystyczną. Także na scenie musicalowej balet zaczął wypierać step amerykański, a taniec jazzowy ewoluował do bardziej nowoczesnej formy. Fall Dance 2023 will kick off the 62nd season of the ECU/Loessin Playhouse this week with 60+ dancers, a performance that features ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern and tap. “It’s a classic ECU dance production, meaning it’s going to be full of all different kinds of dance,” Concert Coordinator John Dixon said. “Anybody who loves dance is going to have something they love in this show.” The concert, which begins Wednesday and continues through Sunday in McGinnis Theatre, includes of excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty.” Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa in 1890, the work is being reconstructed by Assistant Professor of Dance Jessica Teague. 80 years ago today, “Stormy Weather” (1943) had a dual premiere in New York, opening at the Roxy Theatre near Times Square and the Alhambra Theatre in Harlem. In this dazzling backstage musical, loosely based on the life of dancer and actor Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, he leads an all-star cast that includes Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Ada Brown and the high-flying Nicholas Brothers. Film scholar Miriam J. Petty on its significance: “‘Stormy Weather’ provided an opportunity for Black entertainers to work and perform at a center of American culture [...] for these performers’ talent and creativity to be seen by a wider variety of audiences than had ever witnessed them before. That’s right Bill, they still love you back home! Bill “Bojangles” Robinson Memorial Park, Richmond, VA Tap dance legend Luther “Bojangles” Robinson was born in a small wooden house at 915 N 3rd Ave in 1878. The house and just about everything else on that street is gone now. Raised by his grandmother, young Luther danced for pennies on the sidewalk at age five, and by age seven, he was on the road with a traveling show. As a teen, Robinson adopted his brother’s name (Bill) and became an established entertainer on the Black Vaudeville Circuit. Eventually, Hollywood called, and Robinson is perhaps best known for his pairings with Shirley Temple and for his appearance in STORMY WEATHER (1943). According to an article published by Richmond’s Valentine Museum, Bill’s friends called him “Bojangles” because of his contentious attitude. The nickname was derived from the term jangler, which was used to describe an argumentative, angry person. Ironically, Robinson’s on-screen persona was just the opposite. Although he gambled away much of his considerable earnings, Robinson was known for his generosity. In 1933, he observed a group of school children crossing a dangerous intersection in his old hometown. Robinson contacted Richmond city officials and paid for the installation of a traffic light in the predominantly black neighborhood. The Robinson Memorial stands at that same intersection. Richmond’s Robinson Theater opened in 1937 with the Bill Robinson film ONE MILE FROM HEAVEN. To celebrate the occasion, Bill left his footprints and signature imbedded into the concrete sidewalk (but I couldn’t find them). Trivia Tidbit: In addition to tap dancing on stairs, Bill Robinson excelled at running backward. Supposedly, he once ran 75 yards backward in 8.2 seconds. Today marks the birthday of one of the great innovators of tap dance: Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. It's also the anniversary of George Floyd's murder. It can be a complicated day for dancers. Should we celebrate? Should we mourn? How should we feel about it? We believe strongly that anyone who cares about Lindy Hop should care about Black American culture, and respect and want to uplift the experiences of Black folks... ... including listening well to their stories about the oppression and dangers they face, and making sure not to ignore their pain. George Floyd's murder has become an important date to reflect on issues of race, and we should use it to listen, to reflect, and to take action. We also want to honour Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. He was a giant of tap dance, and his birthday is celebrated as International Tap Dance Day. Bill Robinson innovated tap dance style and broke many of the racial barriers Black performers faced. He was one of the first Black performers to perform in vaudeville shows without blackface make-up. He was also the first Black act to perform solo and break the "two-coloured" rule. Famous for his "stair dance", his charming routines with Shirley Temple, and so much more, he is an important and beloved part of tap dance history. Happy National Tap Dance Day! And happy birthday, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson! 💜 Bill Robinson was born in Richmond, Virginia on May 25, 1878, to Maxwell and Maria Robinson. After both parents died when he was an infant, Bill and his brother Percy were raised by their grandmother. As a child, Bill was given the nickname “Bojangles,” although Bill himself was unsure of its origin. At age 6, Robinson began dancing for a living in local beer gardens. At age 12, Robinson joined a traveling company and was entertaining audiences far from home. By 1905, he performed on stage in vaudeville shows featuring numbers by dancers, singers, comedians, and actors. Throughout his vaudeville experience, Robinson became a top dancer in the vaudeville circuit, inventing a new way to tap, transforming it from a flat-footed dance to a style that pushed the performer to his toes. Robinson was noted for his “cool” style, rarely using his upper body and depending on his feet and his expressive face. Under manager Marty Forkins, Robinson worked as a solo act in nightclubs, earning an estimated $3,500 a week. Despite Robinson’s success, his opportunities were limited to black venues because of racism. In 1928, at age 50, Robinson appeared before his first white audiences when Lew Leslie produced Blackbirds, an all-black revue. Robinson captivated the white audiences. During the 1930s, he performed in 14 motion pictures for RKO, 20th Century Fox, and Paramount. His most frequent role was that of an old butler opposite Shirley Temple in The Little Colonel (1935), The Littlest Rebel (1935), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938), and Just Around the Corner (1938). Robinson returned to the stage in 1939 to perform in The Hot Mikado, at the New York World’s Fair. On his 61st birthday, Robinson danced down Broadway from Columbus Circle to 44th Street. He performed well into his 60s before he died of heart failure on Nov. 25, 1949. Performers and fans of dance still pay tribute to “Bojangles”, a man of genius and generosity.
