와호장룡/5점 액션과 로맨스가 합쳐진 아름다운 이야기였음. 강호의 고수인 이모백조차 마지막 숨에야 진심을 꺼낸다는 것은, 살아가며 스스로에게 진실되기란 꽤나 어려움을 말해줌. 양자경과 주윤발의 눈빛이 너무 절절해서 왜 이들이 그렇게 유명했는지 실감했고 장쯔이는 맡은 역할이 그렇게 밉상인데도 카메라에 잡힐 때마다 마냥 예뻐서 어이가 없었음. 대나무 장면은 그냥 그랬고 전체적으로 전투에 배경으로 깔리는 북소리가 더 마음에 들었음. 개인적으로 무협 특유의 날아가는 액션이 불호인데 여기선 크게 거슬리지 않았음. 주먹을 쥐면 그 안에 아무것도 없지만, 주먹을 놓으면 그 안에 모든 게 있다는 말은 기분을 묘하게 함. 두려워하는 것이 실현될 때 오히려 가장 자유롭다는 말이 생각났는데, 집착과 구속을 벗어야만 비로소 온전히 자신을 들여다보고 스스로에게 충실할 수 있다는 의미로 받아들임. 근데 이게 쉽게 된다면 이미 득도한게 아닐까 싶음. 불교 교리가 떠오르기도 했음. 사실 이 영화가 서양인들의 어떤 점을 건드려서 그렇게 많은 사랑을 받았는지 감은 안 오지만 일단 내가 좋았던 포인트에서 다들 좋았겠거니 생각함.

Michelle Yeoh later stars in the Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once. Director Ang Lee is also known for directing Brokeback Mountain and Life Of Pi, two films that have already been reviewed on this account. In 19th century Qing dynasty China, a warrior, Li Mu Bai, gives his sword to Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) to deliver to Beijing for safe keeping. However the weapon gets stolen by criminal Jade Fox and is pursued by Lien. While in Beijing, Lien meets Jen, the daughter of Governor Yu and is planning to get married. Unknown to Lien at the time, Jen has powers that compare her to Bai. That was truly a thrill to watch! I’ve only seen this film once and didn’t remember much about the film until I watched it again. I enjoyed it even more the second time. The action in this film is unmatched compared to other foreign films in the action genre. The hiatus from posting has been due to college. I have completed my freshman year, and am in the process of moving out of my dorm. The good news is that I will be posting tons of reviews during the summer. Sorry for the brief hiatus. I’ve seen 3 Ang Lee films so far: “Hulk”, “Sense & Sensibility”, and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. Each are good films individually, but Lee’s versatility as a director on them the is the most impressive thing on display. You’d never guess they were done by the same guy.
