It's April 27, 1909 and the shrill sound of a police whistle echoes through St. Stephen's Hall. The whistle belongs to one of a group of five suffragettes (three of the remaining four have chained themselves to statues; the fourth, has attached a banner to another.) A clock struck four. A pair of bolt clippers were called for and, within minutes, the women -- with one exception -- were quickly removed from the building. She was later released, however, after it was decided that damage to the statue of the 2nd Viscount Falkland was too slight to warrant prosecution. (Two spikes from the Viscount's spur had been snapped off. They have never been restored.) 📚 It began as St. Stephen's Chapel in 1297 in the old Palace of Westminster, until the Chapel was largely destroyed in the fire of 1834. (Although the Chapel of St. Mary Undercroft did survive and the body of Margaret Thatcher was kept in the crypt the night before her funeral in 2013.) 📚 Statues of famous parliamentarians face each other on either side of the Hall. On either side of the doorways are statues of early Kings and Queens. 📚 Two large mosaic panels depicting the founding of the earliest Chapel by King Stephen and its rebuilding by Edward III, decorate the east and west ends. Paintings on the walls portray important events in British history, while stained glass windows (five on either side), feature the arms of parliamentary cities and boroughs. (Damaged in air raids during the Second World War, they have since been restored.) 📚 The House of Commons, which was also damaged during the War, used the Hall on the first day of each session from 1945 to 1950, during the rebuilding of the bombed Commons Chamber. In 1960, the Hall was renovated and the war damage repaired. 📚 So, what is the purpose of St. Stephen's Hall? It may be worth more than £3.5 million, but it is said to be so uncomfortable, that Charles III has opted to travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, instead. 📚 Commissioned by George III in 1760, the Gold State Coach has carried kings and queens to the Abbey since 1821 -- not without complaint. William IV (1830-1837) said the ride was like being tossed around in a "rough sea." (He knew what he was talking about: William joined the Royal Navy when he was 13). Queen Victoria complained about the "distressing oscillation" of the cabin, while King George VI had the iron-bound wheels replaced with rubber ones, after his 1937 coronation. It wasn't much of an improvement: 16 years later, the late queen described her time in the coach as "horrible." 📚 It's not the most manoeuvrabile coach in the world, either. Thanks to its great weight (four tons) and size (close to 9 meters long by 3.7 meters high) it takes eight horses to pull it up to walking speed. Even then, it takes approximately 27 metres to stop the coach once the brake is applied. (Watch for the brakeman, who walks directly behind it.) 📚 The main body is made of giltwood, covered in a thin layer of gold leaf; Joseph Wilton carved the four Tritons (one at each corner) for which he was paid the princely sum of £2500; three cherubs on the roof, representing England, Scotland, and Ireland, support the Imperial crown. The side panels, which were created by Florentine artist Giovanni Battista Cipriani, depict Roman gods and goddesses.
