⚖️Landmark Supreme Court Case⚖️ A landmark Supreme Court case in 1954 that declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional, overturning the “separate but equal” doctrine established in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896). The ruling laid the foundation for the desegregation of public schools in the United States, marking a significant victory in the civil rights movement. in 1951, Oliver Brown’s daughter was not allowed to attend the nearest school to their home and instead had to be bussed to a school further away, solely because their district segregated their schools. The U.S. District Court ruled against the Browns, justifying their decision based on the precedent set by Plessy v. Ferguson. The Supreme Court overruled Plessy v. Ferguson, by holding that the “separate but equal” doctrine was unconstitutional, saying “ We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine of “separate but equal” has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. . . #brownvboardofeducation #oliverbrown #thurgoodmarshall #SCOTUS #civilrights #plessyvferguson #separatebutequal #segregation #ushistory #apush #landmarkcourtcase

The often violent fight for school desegregation in America showed its ugliness in Little Rock, Arkansas. 9 students were selected to attend Little Rock Central High School which would provide a significantly better education than the segregated black schools. At the Brown v Board of Education National Historical Park in Topeka, Kansas. This was the court case back in 1954 that declared that segregation of schools was unconstitutional. It would take more than a decade for some of the southern states to comply. Washington, D.C., was forced by the 1954 Bolling v. Sharpe lawsuit to follow the 1954 #BrownVBoardOfEducation ruling to desegregate schools. But did you know it took eight years after that landmark decision to desegregate schools in the South? Resistance to school desegregation resulted in open defiance and violence. The South became emboldened and intensified their legal oppression of Blacks. Herbert Lawrence Block, known as #Herblock, created a cartoon of a little girl sitting on a step with eight candles on a cake, with a #JimCrow School in the background. The caption reads, “I’m eight. I was born on the day of the Supreme Court Decision.” Learn more about #BlackHistory at https://www.yocumblackhistory.org/ #AmericanHistory #YAAHA #AfricanAmericanHistory

⚖️ ON THIS DAY—On April 14, 1947, seven years before the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education made racial segregation in schools unconstitutional, the family of nine-year-old Sylvia Mendez and four other Orange County families won a class action lawsuit to dismantle the segregated school system that existed there. 💻 Read briefly about how Mendez vs. Westminster challenged the constitutionality of separate schools for Mexican American students in our April eNews **linkinbio** 📷 The Mendez Historic Freedom Trail and Monument in the city of Westminster, built to honor the achievement of the landmark Mendez v. Discover a little-known piece of Civil Rights history in the new Bullfrog Films release THE LINCOLN SCHOOL STORY, a documentary film by Andrea Torrice. Available now on DVD and streaming from Bullfrog Films and @docuseek. THE LINCOLN SCHOOL STORY follows the heroic fight for school desegregation led by a handful of Ohio mothers and their children in 1954. In the wake of Brown v. Board of Education, school districts nationwide were mandated to integrate. But when African American mothers in Hillsboro, OH, tried to enroll their children in the local, historically white schools, the school board refused. Five mothers and their children took the school board to court. With Constance Baker Motley as the lead lawyer and help from a fledgling NAACP chapter, they marched for two years—despite segregationist redistricting, cross burnings, job losses and legal threats—in one of the longest sustained civil rights marches in American history. When we talk about the threat of #Project2025 to Black Americans, it is not a hypothetical. The billionaires and organizations behind The @heritagefoundation's work to bring this range of #whitesupremacist policies to the federal government have been promulgating racist policies in school districts across the nation. They are behind ALL of the anti-woke, anti-DEI, anti-CRT (all euphemisms for anti-Black) policies that have been pushed in statehouses and local jurisdictions for the past few years. #StopProject2025 Posted @withregram • @makyalittle Although I’m not an attorney (yet), I can see that Brown v. For Day 6 of the countdown to the Wilson Peace Symposium, we're shining a light on the Prince Edward County Free School System. After the Brown v. Board ruling came out, many formerly White-only schools closed to avoid desegregation. For their white students, this meant private tutoring or enrollments at still-segregated private institutions. For Black students, the overwhelming lack of educational facilities meant that Free Schools, such as the one listed above, had to be created. 🥺 @americanchildhood_ Those of you who have seen the movie "American Fiction" will remember this photograph. It plays only a passing role in the movie, which is about racial stereotyping and the burdens of the Black artist in a racist society. But it speaks dramatically to one of the film's prime themes: the self loathing at the heart of the Black American experience. The photograph was taken in 1947 by the legendary cameraman Gordon Parks. It illustrates a study done by Kenneth Clark where he asked Black children to “show me the doll that you would like to play with…the doll that’s a nice doll.” A majority of the Black kids chose the white doll. Then Clark asked them what doll most looked like them, whereupon they became “emotionally upset at having to identify with the doll that they had rejected.” Seven years later, the study played a critical role in the Supreme Court’s reasoning when it ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that “separate but equal” is not equal. See American Childhood: A Photographic History by NYT bestselling author, Todd Brewster. Constance Baker Motley has a long list of historic achievements. In 1964, she became the first African American woman to serve in the New York State Senate. She then became the first woman to be Manhattan Borough President. In 1966, she became the first Black female federal judge. Motley won significant civil rights victories in the U.S. Supreme Court—like writing the original complaint in Brown v. Board of Education and representing Dr. King. Motley also paved the way for Ketanji Brown Jackson, the very first Black woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court.

In May 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously decided that separating educational facilities by race was unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. This famous case is known as Brown vs. Board of Education and it changed the way the American education system is set up today. Book bans, policing pedagogies, student debt, lack of access and resources, the school-to-prison pipeline, police in schools, school shootings …….. All of these things show us our children are not safe, and they are not free. May 17th, 1954 - 2024 This year on May 17th, I will be presenting at a conference hosted by @metronyu (My alma mater). I will be using art to talk about 70 years of fighting for school integration. #blackhistorymonth #endschoolsegregation #nopoliceinschools #brownvboardofeducation #fightforintegration

Happy BLACK HISTORY MONTH from Mamie Phipps Clark!! Luna chose (completely on her own!) to honor Mamie Phipps Clark, the female Psychologist, who used dolls to demonstrate how racially segregated schools impacted the self-esteem of black children. Her testimony helped the HUMAN RACE win big in the Supreme Court case BROWN v. BOARD, which resulted in the desegregation of American schools. Luna, you've got great taste little lady :))) And THANK YOU to all the black and brown and hands that have built-up/continue to build-up, this multi-racial multi-cultural nation. @jcpsky @audubon.traditional.pta 💗🫂🌈✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻✊ #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #mamie #brownvboardofeducation #psychology #wokedoctors #representationmatters #blacklivesmatter

Charles Hamilton Houston (September 3, 1895 – April 22, 1950) was an American lawyer. He was the dean of Howard University Law School and NAACP first special counsel. A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School, Houston played a significant role in dismantling Jim Crow laws, especially attacking segregation in schools and racial housing covenants. He earned the title "The Man Who Killed Jim Crow". Houston is also well known for having trained and mentored a generation of black attorneys, including Thurgood Marshall, future founder and director of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the first Black Supreme Court Justice. He recruited young lawyers to work on the NAACP's litigation campaigns, building connections between Howard's and Harvard's university law schools. He was recruited to the Howard University faculty by the school's first African-American president. Houston believed that the law could be used to fight racial discrimination and encouraged his students to work for such social purpose. Houston left Howard in 1935 to serve as the first special counsel for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Through his work at the NAACP, Houston played a role in nearly every civil rights case that reached the US Supreme Court between 1930 and Brown v. Board of Education (1954). Houston's efforts to dismantle the legal theory of "separate but equal" were completed after his death in 1950 with the historic Brown v. Board of Education (1954) ruling, which prohibited segregation in public schools. At one point Houston had carried a movie camera as he traveled across South Carolina, in order to document the inequalities of facilities, materials and teachers' salaries between African-American and white education. As Special Counsel to the NAACP, Houston dispatched Thurgood Marshall, Oliver Hill and other young attorneys to work a litigation campaign of court challenges to equalize teachers' salaries. #blackhistory, #naacp, #separatebutequal, #brownvboardofeducation, #thurgoodmarshall, #charleshamiltonhouston

STEM ICONS🌱 Name: Dr. Kenneth and Dr. Mamie Clark Profession: Psychologists 👫🏽💭📖 (1914-2005) (1917-1983) Snippet: Kenneth and Mamie Clark are most known for their experiment with white and black baby dolls, which was used in the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1954 case of Brown v. Board of Education.2 The Clarks’ innovative contribution to desegregation in the American education system would not have been possible without their scientific expertise in the field of psychology. The idea for their doll experiment came from Mamie Clark’s master’s thesis which worked with children in an all-black nursery school, titled “The development of consciousness of self in negro pre-school children.” The study suggested that segregation directly harms children, and society by extension of the negative attitudes it perpetuates. Notably, the study was conducted before the Clarks were aware that their results would be used to advance the purposes of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, speaking to their credibility.4 As a result of the doll experiment, the Clarks testified as expert witnesses in several school desegregation cases, including the famous 1954 case of Brown v. Board of Education.2 Education: Kenneth earned his bachelor's in political science at Howard University, in 1935 and returned the following year to complete his master degree in psychology. Kenneth then went to earn his doctorate in psychology from Columbia University. Mamie received her bachelor degree in Psychology in 1938 and returned to Howard for her master degree. She later received her doctorate from Columbia in experimental psychology in 1943. This makes the Clarks, the first African-Americans to obtain their doctoral degrees in psychology from Columbia University.
