NGC 253: Dusty Island Universe Image Credit: Steve Crouch EShiny NGC 253 is one of the brightest spiral galaxies visible, and also one of the dustiest. Some call it the Silver Coin Galaxy for its appearances in small telescopes, or just the Sculptor Galaxy for its location within the boundaries of the southern constellation Sculptor. Discovered in 1783 by mathematician and astronomer Caroline Herschel, the dusty island universe lies a mere 10 million light-years away. About 70 thousand light-years across, NGC 253 is the largest member of the Sculptor Group of Galaxies, the nearest to our own Local Group of Galaxies. In addition to its spiral dust lanes, tendrils of dust seem to be rising from its galactic disk laced with young star clusters and star forming regions in this colourful galaxy portrait. The high dust content accompanies frantic star formation, earning NGC 253 the designation of a starburst galaxy. NGC 253 is also known to be a strong source of high-energy x-rays and gamma rays, likely due to massive black holes near the galaxy’s centre. . . #NGC253 #SculptorGalaxy #SilverCoinGalaxy #GalacticBeauty #StarrySpirals #AstronomyWonders #DustyGalaxy #StarburstGalaxy #CarolineHerschel #Astrophotography #CosmicMarvels #SpaceExploration #GalacticDiscovery #SpiralGalaxy #StellarUniverse #GalacticDust #YoungStarClusters #StarFormingRegions #FranticStarFormation #HighEnergyXrays #GammaRays #MassiveBlackHoles #IslandUniverse #GalacticDisk #DustTendrils #SculptorGroup #LocalGroupOfGalaxies #GalacticCentre #XrayEmission #GammaRaySource

Post 1 “Don’t think just go for it”. This is my inner monologue when thinking about creating some assets for a show I’m about to open. Singularities or the Computers of Venus written and directed by Laura Stribling @roadtheatre Company 4/26-6/2. I saw this photo as I was marinating on what I wanted to do. I don’t claim to be educated in lightening formally but I like experimenting and just seeing “what if..” Time will tell. This lighting I found out is called chiaroscuro, signified by that high contrast of light and dark. The look tells so much story and reminded me of the recent eclipse. 🌑 That’s the shot I want. Going to play around. Keep you posted. Previews start Monday. Come enjoy the wonder and tell us what you think ✨ Xo Avery, aka #CarolineHerschel #theatre #latheatre #williamherschel #comet #astronomer

The image for a blog post about Caroline Herschel. I made this of her with a t-shirt with her brother's, Sir William Herschel, face on it. Makes me chuckle. But her not all the crap she put up with because she was a woman in science in 17-1800s makes me not chuckle. Not at all. #robot_arms #photoshop #astronomer #carolineherschel #herschel #womeninstem

On this day 246 years ago, William Herschel arranged - and performed in - a concert at the New Rooms in Bath with his sister Caroline. Pictured is one of the original tickets to that concert, which cost 5 shillings - approximately £20 in today’s money. In addition to their skills in astronomy, both William and Caroline were talented musicians. William played the oboe, the violin and the organ, and Caroline was a talented singer. William was a composer of 24 symphonies and Caroline was the 'first principle soprano vocalist' for the Messiah concert. Physics and music might sound like incompatible disciplines, but it is actually very common for people with a passion for one to develop a passion for the other. Indeed our patron Sir Brian May is famed for being both the lead guitarist in Queen and an astrophysicist who helped NASA to land an asteroid! #herschelmuseum #carolineherschel #williamherschel #brianmay #spacelovers #astronomylovers #musiclovers #musichistory #spacehistory

Page of Wands: Caroline Herschel, Explorer (Artwork by Janelle Schneider Art + Design ) The Hero as an Explorer: A seeker whose initial curiosity about the world opens a gateway to scientific inquiry. Caroline Herschel was a 19th century astronomer who made several extraordinary discoveries of comets, despite being thwarted from joining the formal scientific community because she was a woman. Her fascination with the night sky led her to perform extensive research into comets, nebulae and other astronomical phenomena, ultimately winning her unprecedented recognition from the political and scientific authorities of her time. Caroline Herschel was driven by a passion for discovery. Setbacks and difficulties are to be expected, but ultimately the explorer grows stronger as these obstacles are sidestepped, challenged or overcome. The crucial step is to produce creative, personally fulfilling work now, and remain confident that future success will follow. #carolineherschel #CarolineHerschel #astronomy #astronomyart #astronomyfacts #womeninastronomy #WomenInAstronomy #pageofwands #wandssuit #explorer #eclipse #sciencetarotdeck #sciencetarot #tarot #tarotdeck #tarotreadings #science #sciencestories #tarotcards #sciencecommunication #tarotcardreading #tarotreading #tarotcardreader #tarotreadersofinstagram #tarotcardoftheday #tarotreader #scienceart

Night Spinner of the week has to be the astronomer Caroline Herschel whose home in Bath I’ve just visited, now the @herschelmuseum. Caroline (1750-1848) lived to be almost 98, despite a life of sleepless toil: ‘if it had not been sometimes for the intervention of a cloudy or moonlight night, I know not when my brother (or I neither) should have got any sleep’ she wrote in her memoir. Like other female astronomers (several included in in ´Sleepless: Discovering the Power of the Night Self’), Caroline worked nights scouring the sky and taking down her brother’s calculations while working full days as a housekeeper. In 1783 she discovered 14 previously unknown nebulae and star clusters as well as 2 new galaxies. She became the first female to earn a salary as an astronomer and was known as the Hunter of Comets. Caroline was also a talented musician, bi-lingual, blind in one eye, and stunted from typhoid. #sleepless #nightspinner #carolineherschel

#fraueninderwissenschaft #carolineherschel #frauengeschichte

🌟🔭 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫! This week's spotlight during Women's History Month, we would like to recognize Caroline Herschel. She was a trailblazer in astronomy who, against all odds, became the first woman to discover a comet and receive a salary for her scientific work in 1781. The King of England employed her and her brother through the royal court. Building a telescope with her brother, she discovered at least eight comets and fourteen nebulae, cataloged star clusters and nebular patches, and added 561 stars into the Flamsteeds Atlas. By the end of her life, at 97, she had received some of the highest honors associated with astronomy at the time, such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Prussian Gold Medal for Science. #WomenInAstronomy #CometDiscoverer #WomensHistoryMonth

The Female Philosopher, smelling out the comet, 1790. In 1786, Caroline Herschel became the first woman to discover a comet. In this print she is depicted smelling through a telescope rays emanating from a cherub’s bottom and saying “What a strong sulpherous scent proseeds from this meteor”. Though not expressly identified in the print, Caroline was the only female astronomer of the time and so can be identified as the woman pictured. In 1787 she was granted a pension by George III which allowed her to earn a living as a scientist, the first woman to do so. Caroline Herschel was an honorary member of the Royal Society (women were not permitted to be actual members) and became the first woman to be awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1838. When she died in 1848 at the age of 97, Caroline Herschel had independently discovered eight comets and 13 deep-sky objects. #astronomy #enlightenment #womenscientists #womeninscience #carolineherschel #georgian_england

Cleopatra (69 a.c. - 30 a.c.) 🩷

On Tuesday 19 March we’ll be BookTalking with Meredith Miller about her new novel Fall River. A dark, psychological portrait of life in the borderlands, Fall River is published on 21 March. In the meantime you can enjoy one of Meredith’s short stories via Fairlight Shorts. ‘Not From an Astronomer’ relates an incident in the life of the eighteenth century astronomer Caroline Herschel. Working at a time when women were excluded from scientific discourse, she nevertheless discovered several comets and was the first woman to publish her findings in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. The story opens one night as Caroline, or Lina as she is known, is making careful observations of the night sky… ‘Heaven seems rounder at night. It cloches us, breathing frost. The weather is fine; no one will worry about Lina until morning. Thank God for the illness that shrunk her in childhood, made her delicacy indelicate, pocked her and put her at the edge of protection. Thank God there is no God, only heaven rounding above. Everyone is gone away across the Channel. They’ve sold another telescope to another king and it will take weeks to carry it in pieces to Prussia. Thank the stars themselves for this empty, flat roof.' Read the rest of ‘Not From an Astronomer’ by Meredith Miller and Book your place at this free event via the links on our bio.

Happy #HeritageTreasures Day! 🎉 We’re joining our friends @heritagefunduk for their annual celebration of heritage treasures across the UK. This year we are shining a spotlight on the people who are shaping the heritage we love. Swipe to see some of the inspiring people involved in National Heritage Memorial Fund supported heritage and acquisitions. 🚆A dedicated group of volunteers at the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group have cared for engine ‘Joem’ for over 30 years and in 2022 secured NHMF funding for vital restoration work, ensuring the beloved engine’s future. 🐦Natural history illustrator Sarah Stone, astronomer Caroline Herschel and botanist and photographer Anna Atkins were scientific trailblazers during the 18th and 19th centuries. NHMF funding has ensured that more people have discovered how their work contributed to a spirited age of scientific and technological advancement. 🪙From metal detectorists to Finds Liaison Officers, there are many people who work behind the scenes to find, acquire and display treasure (such as the Herefordshire Hoard), helping to build a picture of our history. On this day in 1788, German astronomer Caroline Herschel discovered the periodic comet 35P/Herschel-Rigollet, which has an orbital period of 155 years. The comet was later independently rediscovered by Jean Rigollet in 1949. Caroline Herschel, a pioneering German-British astronomer, was born in 1750 in Hanover. She contributed significantly to astronomy, notably discovering several comets. Herschel was the first woman to earn a salary as a scientist, hold a government position in England, and publish scientific work in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. She received numerous accolades, including the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and was named an Honorary Member of the same society. Herschel passed away in 1848. . Such a beautiful cover . Caroline’s Comets by Emily Arnold McCully tells the story of Caroline Herschel, the first woman to discover a comet. What I love most about science and engineering is the creativity, and the joy of developing an idea. An inspiring story for children. #carolineherschel #carolinescomets #emilyarnoldmccully #nonfictionbooksforkids #nonfictionforchildren

This is the Sculptor Galaxy , also known as the silver dollar galaxy and the silver coin galaxy. The Sculptor Galaxy is a “starburst galaxy which means it is undergoing a period of intense star formation. It was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783 during one of her systematic comet surveys. 100 x 180s exposures went into this image which was taken last month on one of the best clear nights that I had. Since the book is only available in German, the following review will be in German as well.

Do you know about the work of German-British Astronomer Caroline Herschel? As most women in history, her work has been greatly overcasted by that of male figures.   During her residency at Villa Waldberta @artistinresidencemunich, Nathalie Brans researched the life and work of Caroline Herschel, connecting this to her own photographs of the Sun and the Moon. We are happy to invite you to the opening of Nathalie Brans’ solo exhibition on the 14th of December, 6pm, at Villa Waldberta, where you can enjoy and discover the works she has developed during this residency! She has been creating an extension of her ‘Sun and Moon diary', a series of pictures of the Sun and the Moon - those ‘companions’ we take for granted, to use the artist's own words. The exhibition ‘Heavenly Bodies’ is open from 14th until 17th of December, from 2-6 pm, at the Palmenhaus of Villa Waldberta, Feldafing – Munich. “If the entire Universe could fit in a shoebox, then how big would the world be? And how big would I be?” HEAVENLY BODIES @artistinresidencemunich 14-17 December 2023 Opening, Thursday 14.12 at 6 pm Parallel program Saturday, 16.12 at 6 pm Lecture with Mojca Kumerdej & Barbara Korun, moderated by Martin Rohmer. Following, a Butoh performance by Stefan Maria Marb, at Salon Villa Waldberta. During this 3-month residency at A-I-R Munich, possible thanks to the collaboration between the City of Munich & @theartistandtheothers, Dutch artist Nathalie Brans had the opportunity to develop her research and work, connecting to local initiatives and professionals. #repost #residency #villawaldberta #solargraphy #solarigrafia #solarigraphy #lumenprints #carolineherschel Image credits in the comments 👇

Lynn Baxter: Magma, stoneware with black oxide and red glaze. 30cm x 36cm x 12cm. Showing till 9 December in Elemental Forces of Nature at Lansdown Stores, Bath, a show organised and curated by Sandra Higgins Art. My element is the moon, with its craters, lava and dust. I like the fact that both moon and vessel are formed by both physical impact and heat. The venue is not far away from the one-time home of Caroline Herschel, astronomer. #lynnnbaxterartist #elementalforcesofnature #themoon #moon #contemporaryceramics #studiopottery #contemporaryart #galleryart #artshow #bathartist #sandrahigginsart #lansdownstores #carolineherschel #astronomy #stoneware
