OK maybe not this much snow in the South Sound today, but this is Late February in western Washington. Hemlocks bent under snow load at Madcap Falls. That graceful, droopy shape serves them well in snowstorms - they bend without breaking. Up to a point. This is the elevation where Mountain Hemlock starts to take over for Western. Started to do the Carter Falls trail, but turned around at the wet, slick, sketchy bridge, especially after being told that just past the bridge I'd be hiking in the snow. I was still traumatized from falling on the ice the day before and almost driving off an icy cliff that morning. I'd love to have gone further, but I chickened out cause I was alone and the water looked so cold if I fell in... All you have to do is spend some time in place to get a feeling about it. _ My family home certainly has a soul that has ways of speaking very loud and very clear. You may think I am crazy, but at night you can hear foot steps and sometimes even music playing. My husband thought I was crazy until he heard it for himself when we stayed there one night. He asked me the next morning who was up walking around and playing music the night before. I of course told him no one was up. He swore he heard someone. I finally told him that it was my grandfather's spirit. He would sometimes pace at night or play a banjo. _ Now, not all places talk this loudly, but they have a strong voice of their own and speak in their own way. Have you ever experienced something like this? Did it totally freak you out?

Trail trekking is our most favourite weekend activity these days. During this pandemic, when all play grounds are closed, indoor play areas are not functional and other kids activities are also not an option, trail trekking bacame a life saver for our family. So we visited Carter Falls a few days back. Its a hidden gem located near a small town called ELKIN in Wilkes county, NC. Its a short hike of around 0.5 miles from the Byrds Branch Campground. The Campground had enough parking space for almost 15-20 cars. The trail was well marked but there is a steep haul at the end which takes you down to the fall. The water was so clear and the views were breathtaking. We played in the water, had some snacks and returned home by evening. It was a day very well spent. Fresh air, sound of water with colourful butterflies around us... all was great food for mind and soul.
