The Mount Rainier National Park Associates completed their first volunteer project of the year on Saturday April 27 at Carbon River. 21 volunteers spread gravel to fill in holes, cleared the beginning of the Chenuis Falls Trail, and prepared the Ranger Falls viewpoint for new railings. Thanks to these volunteers the trails are already safer and more accessible for 2024! Visit our website and click on the "Volunteer" link to find out how you can help with future projects. NPS/K. Park Places! Built in 1932, this Park Place is now part of the Mount Rainier National Historic Landmark District. From here, firewatchers played an important role in protecting the park against fires by looking for smoke and lightning strikes. They used the "fire finder" in the foreground to determine the coordinates of a fire’s location. This building is one of four of its kind remaining in the park. Can you imagine being inside when a lightning storm passes over? Name this Park Place! Check back for the answer on Friday. Glacier monitoring at Mount Rainier gives insight to summer stream flows. Every year crews from the North Coast & Cascades Inventory & Monitoring Network track glacier health at Mount Rainier. In the spring, crews visit Nisqually and Emmons glaciers to measure how much new snow has accumulated on the glacier surface during the winter. Snow depth and density measurements determine how much water is held in that snowpack (snow water equivalent). Measurement rods are also installed to track snow and ice melt over the coming summer. This allows us to track accumulation (snow that becomes added ice) and melt (lost ice) over the long term. In the short term, the snow depth measurements, along with data contributed from climate stations, can help us anticipate melt water availability in the summer. Results of the snow water equivalent (SWE), or how much water would result if all the snow melted, at two different elevations on the Nisqually Glacier are displayed in the graph. Notably, the results from a 4/22/24 survey on the Nisqually Glacier are below the average. In 2024, SWE at these elevations is higher than the drought year of 2005 but below the drought year of 2015 at both elevations. Snow is not the only contribution to water in streams, but in our region it’s an important source. NPS/S.Hagen Photo: Glacier monitoring lead smiles at the success of the spring glacier trip on the lower Nisqually, 4/22/24. Spring Bicycling Safety at Mount Rainier As spring brings longer days, we’re all excited to get back outside! Road crews are hard at work plowing and clearing roads to reopen them for the season, but there is still a long way to go. Please help us get roads open faster by letting crews do their work! DO NOT bicycle on closed roads while work is underway. Road crews often encounter hazards like fallen trees and rockfall during the process of plowing, and plowing involves large machinery that is not expecting other traffic on the road. Roads like SR410/Chinook Pass also have high avalanche risk. Bicyclists that ride on closed roads put not only themselves in danger but can also create safety hazards for road crews. Crews work hard every spring to clear snow, remove rockfall and fallen trees and repair roadways so all users can enjoy access to the east side of Mount Rainier National Park. Looking for safer bicycling options? Always check signs on closed road gates before proceeding. If road work is not underway, signs will indicate that the road is open for recreation. If road work is in progress, please respect Closed Road signs. Or, try mountain biking Westside Road, which is still closed to vehicles but open for recreation, or Carbon River Trail (former road). Both roads can still have spring hazards like rockfall or downed trees. Learn more about bicycling at Mount Rainier at https://go.nps.gov/RainierBicyclingSafety @wsdot Photo of road crews plowing SR410 east of Chinook Pass, 4/17/24. #mountrainiernps #mountrainier #ChinookPass #bicycling #pnwbicycling

#HistoricMountRainier If you’ve entered or exited the east side of the park via SR410, you may remember going under the historic Chinook Entrance Arch. First built in 1936, the “arch” is a pedestrian overpass for the Pacific Crest Trail. It is 90 feet long and the deck of the bridge rests on two cedar logs, each 36 inches in diameter, with two more 30-inch-diameter logs serving as guard walls, all set into stone abutments that use stones gathered from the roadsides. The deteriorating original logs were replaced in 2012 with near-identical logs, using traditional carving methods to match the original rustic style (watch a video of the bridge replacement process at https://go.nps.gov/ChinookEntranceArch). The Chinook Entrance Arch is part of the Mount Rainier Historic Landmark District. Have you driven under or hiked over the Chinook Entrance Arch in the summer? We’ve got one world 💙 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2023 was a year full of opportunities and I am forever grateful to have the privilege to travel and see what this world has to offer in various corners. In honor of Earth Day, here are the first release of some of my favorite images from last year: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1) Virginia, USA 2) Madeira, Portugal 3) Washington, USA 4) Isle of Skye, Scotland 5) California, USA 6) Washington, USA again because my home state is freaking gorgeous ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I hope you take some time to reflect today (and any day for that matter) how we can continue preserving the beauty of this world for many future generations to see.

#HistoricMountRainier Most patrol cabins and shelters in Mount Rainier National Park are made out of wood, but two trail shelters along the Wonderland Trail were constructed out of stone by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The first, Summerland Trail Shelter, was built in 1934 and the second, Indian Bar Trail Shelter, was built in 1940. The supervisory landscape architect overseeing the construction of the Summerland Shelter remarked “the workmen were inexperienced in stonework and the shelter was not too good in appearance, but it was in harmony with its location”. The trail shelters have stone masonry walls on three sides, the fourth side open, log rafters, and cedar shake roofs. The Indian Bar shelter also has a stone chimney. Both Summerland and Indian Bar Trail Shelters are part of the Mount Rainier Historic Landmark District. Have you stopped for a rest at one of these trail shelters while hiking? Plan Your Visit: Tipsoo Lake in Summer One of the easiest lakes to drive to is Tipsoo Lake, located at Chinook Pass off of SR410 on the eastern border of the park. Known for its wildflower meadows, this extremely popular destination has easy trails around the lake and fantastic views of the surrounding Cascade Mountains. The lake is home to diverse wildlife, especially amphibians like the threatened Western toad. If you want to get out to view wildflowers and wildlife, Tipsoo Lake is a great destination! However, the lake is closed to fishing and swimming and pets are not allowed on trails. Picnic tables are located near the main parking area. Please do not picnic in the meadows and stay on trails at all times to protect the delicate ecosystem around the lake. Tipsoo Lake will not require a timed entry reservation for the summer of 2024, so plan ahead to avoid congestion! See below for tips to plan your trip: - What should I bring? Tipsoo Lake is a rustic area with a vault toilet & no visitor services. Bring food, water, and other supplies you may need with you. Don’t forget the 10 Essentials! #HistoricMountRainier The Paradise Ranger Station was constructed in 1921 and was the first government-built structure of its kind at Mount Rainier. Built by the National Park Service in the Rustic style, its steeply pitched roof was designed to withstand the excessive amounts of snowfall at Paradise. The front has a full width 1-story stone porch accessed by stone steps, which descend directly onto the sidewalk. The NPS Rustic style uses native materials like wood and stone to minimize contrast from the natural setting. Shrubs and trees were also planted around the ranger station to better help it blend with the environment and not detract from the visitors’ experience of nature. The Paradise Ranger Station is part of the Mount Rainier Historic Landmark District. The first floor of the ranger station was originally used as an information and checking station, with living quarters in the second story. The information center has since moved to the Climbing Guide House behind the ranger station, but the Paradise Ranger Station still serves as office space for rangers today. September 29, 2023 | Mount Rainier National Park, Washington Day 3 of 4 at Mount Rainier was our first day without rain, and we took full advantage. We made our way up to the Paradise area, one of the more popular regions of the park. We decided to do the High Lakes Loop around Reflection Lakes, one of the more popular hikes in the region. Our timing couldn’t have been more perfect. With so much rain (and snowmelt in the Paradise area) in the days prior, there were very few people on trail. We were also super excited to see the foliage display such bright fall colors for some awesome pictures.

Plan a Trip to Mount Rainier: Mowich Lake in Summer Set in a glacial basin surrounded by fragile wildflower meadows, Mowich Lake is the largest and deepest lake in Mount Rainier National Park. During the summer, the lake is open for fishing and non-motorized boating and a wilderness campground (permit required) is located next to the parking area. Mowich Lake is a stop along the Wonderland Trail, with access to Spray Falls & Spray Park, Ipsut Creek, and Carbon River, as well as the Tolmie Peak Trail, which climbs to a historic fire lookout. Easy trails skirt a portion of the lake – keep an eye out for frogs, birds, and other wildlife! Stay on trail to avoid trampling wildflowers. Pets are not allowed on trails. Mowich Lake will not require a timed entry reservation for the summer of 2024. See below for tips to plan your trip! - What should I bring? #HistoricMountRainier The Nisqually Suspension Bridge in Longmire is the only remaining timber-frame vehicle suspension bridge designed by the National Park Service. A pedestrian bridge had existed since 1911 but was replaced by a larger single-span suspension bridge in 1924 to connect Longmire to an area across the river that was developed as a campground. Superintendent Tomlinson described the newly completed bridge: “The bridge with its rustic towers supporting the cable suspension is a very fitting type of construction for a national park.” (HAER report No. WA-44). The Nisqually Suspension Bridge was reconstructed in 1952 and 2005, using similar workmanship and materials to the earlier bridge. The Nisqually Suspension Bridge is a contributing structure in the Mount Rainier Historic Landmark District. The bridge is also part of the Longmire Historic Walking Tour. Stop in the Longmire Museum for a map of the walking tour or use the NPS App to follow the self-guided tour the next time you are in Longmire. #HistoricMountRainier Stevens Canyon Road has two of the three tunnels found in the park (the third is along SR123). Stevens Canyon Tunnel was constructed in 1937 and bores through 210 feet of solid rock. Box Canyon Tunnel was built from 1950-1952 and is 160 feet long. Unlike Stevens Canyon Tunnel, the tunnel walls and portals of the Box Canyon Tunnel were not covered with masonry but left as bare rock due to the “excellent nature of the rock encountered” (HAER report No. WA-70). While built after World War II, the Box Canyon Tunnel is considered consistent with earlier park road structures in the historic district. Both tunnels are part of the Mount Rainier Historic Landmark District. Have you driven through these two tunnels on Stevens Canyon Road (open during the summer only)? There are times where I feel lonely when I’m doing these solo trips but I am always reminded that my dog had always been the best companion while visiting some of the most beautiful places. More often than not, I sometimes wonder what he’s thinking when he’s crammed into a tiny space aka my tent when we’re out there. #washingtonexplored #hikewashington #washingontrails #mountrainier #pnwadventures #pnwwonderland #pnwhiking #mountrainiernationalpark #mountrainiernps #hikewashington #explorewashington #explorewa #canonphotography #canon80d #canon_photo #adventurealways #pnwonderland #pnwphotographer #explorepnw #sunsetgram #sunsetlandscape #dogswhohike #dogswhoexplore #germanshorthairedpointersofinstagram #adventureswithdogs #exploringdogs #dogstagram

The false summer that the PNW underwent over the last week certainly gave a taste of the next few months. But in the mountains, the winter is still hanging around. The higher elevations still hides pristine snow-capped landscapes that would continue to draw winter adventurers up to the mountains for a few more weeks. #mountrainier #mountrainiernps #mountrainiersummit #winterwonderland #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparksusa #pnw #pnwlife #pnwartist #pnwonderland

This past weekend NPS Park Rangers at Mount Rainier and members of the Tacoma Mountain Rescue (TMR) unit of Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) took advantage of the nice weather and conducted search & rescue training at Paradise. MRA units often work hand in hand with NPS Park Ranger staff on search & rescue missions at Mount Rainier. As the weather starts getting nicer and days get longer, please be mindful that the weather and environmental conditions can change quickly at Mount Rainier when you plan your visit. Be aware that as the snowpack transitions to spring and summer conditions, thin snow bridges can cover deep trenches and moats within the snow and falling through can cause injury or worse. Listen for the muffled sound of running water under the snow, indicating a hidden creek. Don’t follow other people’s tracks blindly – snow that may have supported people before could have become thin and hazardous as temperatures warmed up. For up-to-date trail and route conditions please stop by the Longmire Wilderness Information Center or visitor centers and have a chat with a ranger before heading out for the day. NPS/C. #HistoricMountRainier The Longmire area was first developed by James Longmire, who’s family went on to run a health resort in the late 1800s to early 1900s using natural volcanic mineral springs found in the area. Two mineral springs built during 1920s remain from the original resort development in the Longmire Meadow. Soda Springs is named for the soda, magnesium, iron, and sodium chloride content of its waters. It has a stone masonry enclosure surrounded by a wooden plank walkway with a short spur trail edged by stone parapet walls. Iron Mike Springs has high iron content in the water, giving the spring both its rusty color and its name. Iron Mike has a circular stone masonry enclosure with concrete steps enclosed by a U-shaped parapet wall. Both springs are contributing structures in the Mount Rainier Historic Landmark District. Have you viewed these springs along the Trail of the Shadows in Longmire? NPS/D. Schnute Photo of Soda Springs in 1986. NPS Photo of Soda Springs in 2013. 😜It looks like a Q-tip, but it's Bear Grass 🐻🌿 This iconic wildflower, scientifically known as Xerophyllum tenax, graces the meadows of Mt. Rainier National Park with its delicate white blooms, adding a touch of ethereal beauty to the landscape. 🌸 What is Bear Grass?: Bear Grass is a perennial herbaceous plant native to western North America. It's characterized by long, slender leaves clustered at the base and a tall flowering stalk topped with numerous small, white flowers. It rarely blooms in back-to-back years, as it's a particular flower needing ideal conditions. 🌼 When Does it Bloom?: Typically, Bear Grass blooms in the summer months, usually from June to August, depending on the altitude and weather conditions. Its blossoms create a captivating display of white blooms that contrast beautifully against the vibrant greenery of the park. 📍 Where to Find it: Venture into the subalpine and alpine meadows of Mt. Rainier National Park to witness the enchanting beauty of Bear Grass in its natural habitat. Look for these graceful blooms in open areas, particularly along hiking trails like the Skyline Trail, Paradise Meadows, and Spray Park. Immerse yourself in the serenity of nature as you wander amidst fields of Bear Grass, soaking in the breathtaking scenery and tranquil ambiance of Mt. Rainier National Park. 🌿✨ #MtRainierMagic #WildflowerWonder #NaturePerfection #mountrainiernationlapark #mountrainiernps #nps #washington #visitmtrainier #wildflowers #beargrass #beautifulblooms

Steller’s jay, Mount Rainier National Park, 2019. This Steller’s jay was another turning point for me as a baby hobby photographer.
