I’ve come to really appreciate lowland trails with boardwalks. It rains on average about 150 days a year here and the mountains are covered in snow until late June most years. During the rainy spring these boardwalks are the best option for getting outside without being ankle deep in mud. The Clear Creek trail system in Silverdale, WA is a series of interconnected urban trails that run throughout the town. On September 19, 2021, Dylan and I headed to Rosario Beach and checked out the Maiden of Deception Pass, aka Ko-kwal-alwoot, who’s Coast Salish legend prompted the creation of her statue and story posts here. As you walk around the grassy knoll of Rosario Head, you can see Bowman Bay, the Salish Sea, and the San Juan Islands, making this one of my favorite places to enjoy! Deception Pass State Park is a great camping location, which I highly recommend to anyone visiting the area, though they do book up quickly in the tourist season. 🌊

Lynden, WA has a lot of Dutch influence. It was no coincidence we stayed in a windmill! They’ve done so much incredible work making their city inviting and beautiful. They pay homage to their Dutch influence with windmills aplenty throughout their downtown and informational plaques about immigrants from the Netherlands. They also have a beautiful statue to honor Phoebe Judson, the founder of Lynden! Besides the windmills, Lynden also showcases their love of raspberries!! Look at those raspberry flower displays they have throughout their downtown! It’s been so moody lately! I’ve been staying inside working on a few projects, including some new blog posts on my website and this little list of tips for spring hiking in Washington! What else would you add to the list? 1. Be Mindful of Snowpack in the Mountains Spring in Washington means that while lower elevation trails may be clear, higher elevations can still have significant snowpack. It’s important to check trail conditions before heading out, as some trails may be closed or inaccessible due to snow. Additionally, with the thawing snow, avalanche danger may be higher, especially during the warmer part of the day when snow is melting. Stay informed and consider hiking with proper avalanche safety gear if you plan to venture into areas with avalanche risk. 2. Gear Up for Wet Conditions Springtime in Washington brings plenty of rainfall, which means trails can be muddy and slippery. Make sure to wear appropriate waterproof footwear and clothing to stay dry and comfortable during your hike. Consider bringing trekking poles for added stability on wet and uneven terrain. Don’t forget to pack a rain jacket, extra layers, and a waterproof cover for your backpack to keep your gear dry. 3. Prepare for Crowded Trails With the arrival of spring, many hikers start hitting the trails, leading to increased traffic and busy trailheads. Be prepared to encounter full parking lots and consider starting your hike early in the day to secure a spot. Have a backup plan in mind and prepare a list of nearby hikes as alternatives in case your initial choice is too crowded or inaccessible due to conditions. This way, you can make the most of your day outdoors without the disappointment of a closed or full trail. Do not try to park where you are not supposed to - it’s dangerous for you and those around, you may get stuck, and you may end up with a costly ticket, or worse, get towed. What would you add?
